iOS 8 Problems: 7 Tips for iPhone & iPad Users

With iOS 8 problems still plaguing iPhone and iPad users, we want to offer some advice to those struggling with issues and hopefully, get iPhone and iPad users prepared for Apple’s iOS 8 updates, and potential iOS 8 problems, of the future.

Apple’s new iOS 8 update was first released to the public in September alongside the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The update, which replaces iOS 7, is not a huge departure from the previous operating system and instead builds on the foundation left behind by last year’s changes. It delivers new features, enhancements, fixes, and more to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users.


The iOS 8 update also delivered a series of iOS 8 problems to iPhone and iPad users and over the past two and a half months, Apple’s worked to fix those iOS 8 problems through a series of updates. First, we saw iOS 8.0.1. Next, it was iOS 8.0.2 and iOS 8.1. Then, last month, Apple pushed out iOS 8.1.1. iOS 8.2 is active in the company’s beta program but it’s not expected to arrive until next year.

We’ve touched on a number of these iOS 8.1 problems and iOS 8.1.1 problems but they continue to be a pain point for many iPhone and iPad users around the world. We continue to get bombarded with feedback, and questions, so today we want to take a look at some useful tips that we think will help those struggling on iOS 8.1.1, iOS 8.1 or any of the other versions that Apple’s released.


Here, we offer seven tips that we think will help those of you struggling with issues after installing Apple’s brand new operating system.


Look at Our Fixes for iOS 8 Problems

The first thing you’ll want to do is take a look at our fixes for common iOS 8 problems. We’ve been scouting out the iOS 8.0 update and all of its subsequent updates and we’ve put together a list that we think encompasses many of the problems plaguing iPhone and iPad users. There are multiple fixes listed for each problem and while they may not work for some of you, we can confirm that they’ve worked for many iPhone and iPad users.

This isn’t the only place to work, it’s a starting point, but we have a feeling that it might help some of you get on track towards a better iOS 8 experience on iOS 8.1.1 and below.

Update to iOS 8.1.1

If you haven’t already, we highly recommend making the move up to iOS 8.1.1. As we noted in our full iOS 8 review, iOS 8.1.1 is the most stable version of iOS 8 across all devices (minus the iPhone 5). It delivers fantastic performance and it squashes some of the bugs that came attached to previous versions of the iOS 8 upgrade.


Don’t Be Afraid to Do Some Research

Often times, we run into people that are either too prideful or too afraid to ask for help. Don’t be. Instead of being afraid, go out and your research if you’re experiencing iOS 8 problems on iOS 8.1.1, iOS 8.1 or below. Take a look at Apple’s Discussion forums and gather user feedback. Research other top forums and get involved in the community if you’re worried about the future. And above all, don’t be afraid to ask questions.

More often than not, there’s going to be a fix for the iOS 8 problem that you’re experiencing. And while you may not find the permanent fix on your first go-round, you might wind finding a fix that works on your second or third attempt. Don’t sit on your hands, be proactive and you’re going to wind up finding a solution sooner rather than later.

Older Phone or Tablet? Try This

If you own an older phone or tablet, say the iPhone 4s or iPad 2, and the iOS 8.1.1 update isn’t treating you well, we highly suggest performing a factory reset on the device. A factory reset is going to wipe the device clean (yes, it’s a huge pain) but it also has the potential to restore solid performance on the device. We’ve seen it with our own eyes in the past.

This will work for newer devices too but we really only recommend this huge step to those of you that have filled up a device with apps and files over a number of years. Factory resets aren’t easy and they take a lot of time but what you might find afterward could make the entire process worth it. If you’re ready to do this, head over to these instructions. If You Don’t Want to Go That Far, Try This

If you don’t want to go through the hassle of a factory reset, you can also try resetting all of your settings. This is a small step and one that doesn’t take much time but it could have an enormous impact on the performance of your iPhone or iPad. In the past, its restored battery life, fixed Wi-Fi issues, and even fixed cellular data problems among other things.

To do this, head into your settings, scroll down to Reset, and select Reset All Settings. The process could take five to 10 minutes depending on your device and you’ll need to enter a passcode to get it to work. Once the process is complete, you may find that iOS 8 is performing a whole lot better on your iPhone or iPad. If not, it might be time to start weighing some nuclear options like the factory reset.

Avoid the iOS 8.2 Beta

Installing the iOS 8.2 beta might seem like a good way to get rid of iOS 8.1.1 or iOS 8.1 problems. We know of some people that moved to the iOS 8.1 beta to escape iOS 8.0.2 and iOS 8.0 problems, only to run into issues with the beta software.

There is a beta in the name for a reason. This is not finished software and it’s not meant for public consumption. It’s an update that’s aimed at developers. We’ve used plenty of betas in the past and almost all of them come with one problem or another. Most of them feature battery life drain and we know of no one that wants that.

Sure, the update might squash some of the issues you’re having on iOS 8.1.1 or below but there’s a very good chance the software will introduce some problems of its own. Stay away from it and seek out fixes on your own.

Take Your Device to An Apple Store

If all else fails, we recommend taking your iPhone or iPad to the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store. Make an appointment, especially during the holidays,  and have them run some diagnostics on the device. In the past, we’ve had Geniuses discover bloated batteries and broken iPhones and if you’re under warranty, you might wind up with a brand new phone depending on the kind of stock they have. Each store will be a little different.

At the very least, they have the means to really get down into the nitty gritty of your iOS 8 problems and it’s possible that they’ll provide a permanent fix in the form of a settings change or if you’re lucky, a brand new phone or tablet.
