DROID Turbo Android 5.0 Update Release Nears

Published

on

This year Motorola has been busy with the release of many popular smartphones like the Moto X and Nexus 6, but the company hasn’t forgot about one of its best smartphones this year in the Motorola DROID Turbo. In fact, new details have begun to surface suggesting the DROID Turbo Android 5.0 update is coming soon.

Back in October Motorola made the DROID Turbo official, launching a smartphone similar in size and features as the new Moto X, only improved in multiple key areas exclusively to Verizon Wireless. The phone has a lot to offer and arrived just weeks after Android 5.0 Lollipop was announced, so for now is running Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

In November Motorola was quick to update a few popular devices like the Moto X Pure Edition and new Moto G (2014) to Android 5.0 Lollipop ahead of almost all other manufacturers, and now new details are suggesting the DROID Turbo is up next. Read on for more details.

Droid Turbo Review -5

Motorola was one of the first manufacturers to issue an update to Android 4.4 KitKat last year, and then again in 2014 with the Android 5.0 Lollipop update last month. They’ve done an excellent job with updates recently, especially on Verizon Wireless, and look to continue that with the flagship DROID Turbo.

According to multiple reports that arrived late last night, Motorola has announced and is accepting invites for users to try out new software in what the company calls a “Soak Test” for the Motorola Feedback Network. Usually this is major software updates for key Motorola smartphones, and the final testing phase for a software release before it gets officially sent out as an update for the general public.

We saw the same thing with the Moto X Pure Edition, and plenty of other Motorola devices over the years. And while we can’t be 100% certain as to what’s coming next for the Moto DROID Turbo, the Android 5.0 Lollipop update is most expected. Here’s a small quote from the email going out last night.

Thanks for joining the Motorola Feedback Network. We are inviting owners of the Motorola Droid Turbo on Verizon to participate in an early preview of a new software release, and provide feedback. If you are not currently using a Droid Turbo, please excuse and ignore this email.

The registration window is very short for this activity, and we can only accept a limited number of participants. Please don’t wait to respond. Sorry for the short notice.

The email was light on details, but given the working of “early preview of new software” and the fact that the registration window was very short, this is likely the last final test of the DROID Turbo Android 5.0 update before they release it to the public.

Recently Verizon has been working on and updating devices to support its new VoLTE service, which is voice calls over the large and ever expanding 4G LTE network, which is another possibility for this soak test. This will also enable voice and data usage at the same time, something many Verizon owners are looking forward to. Usually soak tests are for larger software updates, rather than something small like a bug fixing update and VoLTE, so we’ll have to wait and see.

So what does this mean for current Verizon DROID Turbo owners? That an update is coming soon, possibly before the end of the week, or early next week at the latest.

With most Motorola software updates we see a soak test arrive first, and usually the full release and rollout to all users starts within 48 hours of the soak test. Again, it is the final testing phase just hours before the general release, so expect an update to begin rolling out extremely soon.

It’s highly possible this is the DROID Turbo Android 5.0 Lollipop update, or even Android 5.0.1 since Google’s released a small bug fixing update, and we’ll be sure to update the moment we know more details about what’s coming next for the Turbo.

I am a part of this soak test, and while I originally thought it would be 5.0 the title of the private thread in MFN was DROID Turbo VoLTE/Advance Verizon December 2014 software update. I got the update last night and can confirm that the update was HD voice, Volte and advanced calling update that fixed other issues, like the echo when using speakerphone, in call volume, etc. Not lollipop, but it can’t be long!
