Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Breakdown

Published

on

In November, Google started rolling out its new Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system. Since then, we’ve seen the update take a number of twists and turns including the release of two new updates, Android 5.0.1 Lollipop and Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. With that in mind, we want to breakdown the update’s status for Nexus, HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung, and Sony users.

At the tail end of last year, Google finally started pushing out the software it announced all the way back at Google I/O in June. That software, Android 5.0 Lollipop, is a massive update to the Android operating system that includes the company’s new Material Design language that changes the look and feel of its popular OS.

Google’s Android 5.0 Lollipop release started with select Nexus smartphones and tablets though over the past two or so months, the release has begun to encompass all sorts of devices including smartphones like the Moto X and Samsung Galaxy S5. We’ve even seen Samsung release two brand new Android 5.0 bug fixers in the forms of Android 5.0.1 Lollipop and Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.

For most users, the Nexus 7 Lollipop update is worth installing.

Over the past two months, we’ve also begun to see Android 5.0 Lollipop release details pour out of companies and their carrier partners. And we’ve seen a flurry of details mark the start of 2015, the year during which Android 5.0 Lollipop is set to reach thousands of Android users on a number of different devices around the world.

With that in mind, we want to take a look at where the Android 5.0 Lollipop update is currently at for owners of devices on major Android manufacturers. This Android 5.0 Lollipop update breakdown takes a look at where roll outs are currently at and what we know about what’s to come.

Some Android manufacturers and carriers are very forthcoming. Others are not. We’ve done our best to put together an updated and detailed timeline for those of you who own a Nexus, HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung, or Sony smartphone or tablet.

Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop Update

Google’s Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop release has been full of twists and turns in the weeks after the initial release back in November. Here’s how everything looks right now.

The Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 2013 Wi-Fi, Nexus 9, and Nexus 10 have all been bumped up to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, a bug fix update that’s tackled several of the big time bugs that arrived on board the Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Some users still haven’t been moved up to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop yet, something that we pointed out in our full breakdown, though Google allows Nexus users to manually sideload the software.

Nexus6-11

Google’s Nexus 7 2012 Wi-Fi is currently on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, a different Lollipop bug fix update that for whatever reason, is only available for that specific model. It’s not clear if the cellular versions of the Nexus 7 2012 and Nexus 7 2013 will be getting Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. Both devices remain on Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

The company remains silent about the future of Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop updates though rumors have suggested that the company is working on an Android 5.1 Lollipop update for sometime this year.

HTC Android 5.0 Lollipop Update

The HTC One M8 and HTC One M7, Google Play Editions, got their Android 5.0 Lollipop updates last year. This year, the regular HTC One M8 and HTC One M7 models will get Android 5.0 Lollipop. HTC has committed to a 90 day release window for the two devices though it hasn’t outlined any specific release date details.

Noted HTC leaker LlabTooFeR this week noted that he expects the international HTC One M8 Android 5.0 Lollipop roll out to start sometime this month, perhaps in the next week or two. A specific date is unknown but the source is credible and we should see some movement begin this month. U.S. carriers remain silent about the upgrade.

From the look of things, the HTC One M8 flagship should get the update ahead of the HTC One M7, the flagship from 2013. HTC One M7 Lollipop release details remain shrouded in mystery for the moment though we expect to see information trickle out as we push deeper into the year.

We haven’t seen any specific information emerge for other, lesser devices though previous rumors have pegged roll outs for most, if not all, HTC smartphones from 2013 and 2014.

LG Android 5.0 Lollipop Update

The LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop has rolled out to several regions including Poland, Korea and the United Kingdom. LG, notorious for being silent about major Android upgrades, has not outlined the Android 5.0 Lollipop update’s path so it’s not clear where the update will head next.

We’ve seen carriers confirm LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop updates including Australian carriers Telstra and Vodafone but those updates are without concrete release dates. Both are still in the unpredictable testing phase and we imagine that’s where the update resides at most carriers. U.S. carriers have yet to announce any plans.

The LG G3 Lollipop update is expected to be followed by the LG G2 Lollipop update though that release still hasn’t started. We haven’t seen any carriers confirm its presence which means that a release is likely weeks away at best.

Motorola Android 5.0 Lollipop

Motorola was one of the first Android manufacturer’s to release Android 5.0 Lollipop but the roll out still has a long way to go before its complete. Motorola still owes several Android 5.0 Lollipop updates to its users including updates to the Moto X 2013, Droid Ultra and others. Motorola’s software support page hasn’t been updated in awhile and the company remains quiet about specific release dates.

Samsung Android 5.0 Lollipop

Samsung Android 5.0 Lollipop update details have been flying around for a number of weeks now and we’ve put them together into detailed breakdowns for each listed device.

We’ve put together extensive Android 5.0 Lollipop breakdowns for the Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung Galaxy Note 2, and the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge.

What’s important to note is that Samsung is making a ton of progress with its Android 5.0 Lollipop push and it should start spreading to other devices in the near future. For the moment, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 Lollipop update is the only update that’s rolled out.

Sony Android 5.0 Lollipop

Last year, Sony announced a number of Android 5.0 Lollipop updates including upgrades for the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. The company’s roll out still hasn’t begun though that will finally change in a few weeks.

At CES, Sony announced Xperia Lollipop release date plans. Sony says that it will start rolling out the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to the Xperia Z3 series next month. The company did not confirm a specific date for the update’s arrival only confirming the month of February. The company is also expected to start pushing Android 5.0 Lollipop to the Xperia Z2 series in the near future as well.
