Galaxy S5 Lollipop Update Pushes Ahead as U.S. Waits

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 Lollipop update continues to push ahead though the Samsung Galaxy S5 Lollipop update remains elusive in most regions including the United States where Galaxy S5 users on a number of different carriers await their move up to Samsung’s first big upgrade to the device’s operating system.

In December, Samsung started pushing out its Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 Lollipop update to users in Poland. The update delivered a number of big time features including performance improvements, revamped core TouchWiz applications to match Google’s new Material Design, and more. The update represents the first major update to the Samsung Galaxy S5, a device that arrived with Android 4.4 KitKat on board back in April of last year.

Samsung’s Galaxy S5 Lollipop roll out has been extremely slow though. So far, the update’s spread to just a few regions. Its hit the international Galaxy S5 in Spain, Russia, and Malaysia and it has also landed for carriers in South Korea. This is typical of Samsung. Today, the Galaxy S5 Lollipop update’s hit a massive market, a sign that Samsung is getting ready to finally make a big push ahead of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 release.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 Lollipop update is now pushing out in the United Kingdom. The update is an Android 5.0 Lollipop update, not Android 5.0.1 or Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, though the older software still delivers a ton of new features, fixes and enhancements to Samsung’s current Galaxy S smartphone.

The update is reportedly rolling out Over-the-Air though those looking to skip the OTA process can opt to download and install the software through Samsung’s Kies software for PC. Galaxy S5 users will need to ensure that they have Samsung Kies 3 before trying to install the update via the computer. Those looking to install OTA simply need to check the device’s settings for the update. If available, a download will prompt.

Samsung’s Galaxy S5 Lollipop release continues to make progress though it’s still not clear when it will hit some of its most important markets which include the United States. The U.S. market is an important one for Samsung and the company, in recent years, has put a focus on getting software out in a timely manner.

Leaks have suggested that the U.S. will once again be at the front of the pack in terms of timing. A recent leak from a Samsung Mobile employee hinted at a Lollipop update for the Galaxy S5 in the month of January. The company is also expected to push out a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop update sometime this month though those details remain unconfirmed.

Sprint’s Galaxy S5 Lollipop update is currently in testing and the update, weeks ago, leaked out to the public in test build form. The carrier remains silent about a release date though with an arrival in a major market like the United Kingdom, we should be inching closer to an arrival in the United States.

Samsung’s confirmed plans to roll the Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 Lollipop update out to the Galaxy S5 LTE-A in Korea starting sometime in early 2015. Thanks to Samsung’s regional wings, we also know that the company is planning to push a Galaxy S5 Lollipop update to the Galaxy S5 mini and Galaxy S5 Active. Release dates for all three updates remain unknown.

We haven’t seen too many carrier-specific Galaxy S5 Lollipop details arrive on the scene though Vodafone Spain did confirm a release for 2015. French carrier SFR, a carrier known for spilling its release dates early, claimed that it would get the Galaxy S5 Lollipop out in December. That did not happen though it’s clear that international carriers, and U.S. carriers, have Galaxy S5 Lollipop releases in the cards for the near future.

Nice article. I wonder if jailbreaking my iphone 6 would allow for a better keyboard experience? Having migrated to the iphone 6 from Android, I really, really, miss being able to have a customized keyboard. Like having a numbers row atop the main keyboard screen, instead of having to flip back and forth between the letters screen and numbers screens. It’s my biggest disappointment with the iphone.
