The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is sure to be a best-selling role-playing game when it arrives on Sony’s PS4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One later this year. For those in doubt, yesterday Microsoft shared a deep dive of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s first three hours of gameplay.

Microsoft revealed its in-depth look at The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on its Xbox Wire news blog yesterday. That detailed preview breaks down what users can expect when they first fire up the game on their console of choice or PC.

Developer CD Projekt RED has promised in impressive game with plenty of action for series fans, but that’s not exactly what they deliver early on. Instead, the game starts off with players sitting in a bathtub. Microsoft’s recount of what’s happening in the The Witcher 3: Wild Hunts skips past a lot of earlier spoilers and picks up when the main character, Geralt of Rivia, is surrounded by ghouls. Players are tasked with taking down these ghouls through a mix of physical attacks and spells. Microsoft’s account of what happens early on in the story notes that the magical beasts users encounter in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are fearsome, with devastating attacks you just haven’t seen in other portrayals of magical creatures like Harry Potter, for example.

Already users have experienced a ton of magical creatures and saved a few people from them. Players will use a steed to fast travel between different points in the game world. Players will also use the Alchemy menu to craft different potions and upgrades. They’ll need to stay focused on strategy if they hope to defeat the beats that populate The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s world. Microsoft’s recounting of the The Witch 3: Wild Hunt’s campaign ends with an epic battle involving a griffin that’s been terrorizing town folk.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is set to be one of this year’s banner role-playing games. CD Projekt RED is promising around one-hundred hours of battles and gameplay and a massive world for players to explore. Users who’ve played past games in the series can expect new experiences. Attacking foes on horseback is new to this game. So is being able to swim below the water’s surface and lunge over smaller objects. There’s also some climbing mechanics built into the game too. New weapons include a crossbow. To make the world more realistic, CD Projekt Red is delivering a day and night system that makes the world feel more alive. That’s a big upgrade and something most role-playing games seem to leave out. The mechanic will sound familiar to anyone who has played a game like Nintendo’s Pokemon series; certain magical monsters will only appear during the day. Other deadly creatures will take their place at night, forcing users to think a little more about their surroundings.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will anchor a pretty mild summer gaming season. Debuting a month later is Batman: Arkham Knight. Mortal Kombat X, Splatoon and Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin, are also confirmed for arrival around the same time. Both Microsoft and Sony need as many games as they can to prop-up sales during the summer months. The summer gaming season is usually light on titles because studios are working on their big-name releases for the holiday season. The Witcher 3 and Batman: Arkham Knight were originally set to help lure gamers into purchasing an Xbox One, PS4 or upgrade their PC last fall. Both games were delayed so that their developers would have more time to get them ready before release.
