Unu DX-6 iPhone 6 Battery Case Review

With the huge number of iPhone 6 cases and other accessories that debuted at CES last month, there’s one company that doesn’t want to be left out of the competition. Unu has a new iPhone 6 battery case available that offers around 125% more battery for Apple’s latest flagship device.

Unu isn’t the most well-known brand when it comes to iPhone accessories, but it has released a 3,000mah battery pack that aims to take on the likes of Mophie and Incipio with their new battery cases. The DX-6, as it’s called, can essentially double the life of the iPhone 6 and then some, but does the overall case impress?

iPhone battery cases have gained popularity over the last couple of years, with Mophie leading most of the way. The truth is, iPhone battery life sucks for most users. Some heavy iPhone users can’t get through an entire day on a reasonable charge, and they can’t get near an outlet to charge it up. This is where a battery case can come in handy. It allows you to essentially add double the battery life to the iPhone, as long as you’re okay with a thicker and heavier case to go with it.

Unu’s DX-6 is reasonably priced at $80, especially since it comes with a 3,000mAh battery on the inside, beating out Mophie’s new Juice Pack Air by 250mAh and priced at $20 less, making Unu’s battery case a better buy on paper, but we’ll have to dig deeper to see if saving $20 and gaining a whole 250mAh is really worth it in the end.

Unu’s new iPhone 6 case rocks a matte black finish that isn’t anything amazing, but it’s sleek and simple, which many users will appreciate. In fact, the matte finish gives the case a quality look and feel, which is something that I can’t say with Mophie’s glossy plastic battery cases, which make them look almost like cheap toys.

The DX-6 feels really thin in the hand, and it probably only doubles the thickness of most iPhone 6 bumper cases, which isn’t that bad. Furthermore, Unu’s battery case is simple to install on your iPhone, and it uses a method almost identical to Mophie: simply detach the top part of the case and then slide your iPhone 6 into the bottom part of the case, making sure to plug in the Lightning connector that’s at the bottom. From there, simply reattach the top plastic piece and you’re good to go.

To turn on the battery case and get it going, all you have to do is press down on the button on the back of the case for a couple of seconds to get it to turn on. From there, a green LED light will appear. That light will change from green to blue to red to indicate the various battery levels. When it turns red, that means the DX-6 is running low on battery and needs a recharge. It’s not the most useful light indicator, but it gets the job done.

However, the design of the DX-6 case is a little lacking. The biggest downside is that the power button, volume buttons, and the mute switch are recessed, making them fairly difficult to access. Instead, we prefer the button extenders that come with Mophie’s and Incipio’s battery case, which makes it effortless to access these buttons.

Another downside with the case is that the iPhone 6 doesn’t fit snugly inside, and I could hear and feel my iPhone 6 shake around inside the case just a bit. It’s nothing extreme, and holding the case a little tighter than usual will stop the shaking, but it seems like something that could get on many buyers’ nerves.

As for how it performs, it didn’t do as well as the Incipio OffGRID Express that I tested recently. After recharging my iPhone 6 from 3% to a full 100% with both cases, I then tested to see which case would deliver more residual charging past a full recharge. The OffGRID Express gave me a promised 21% of extra battery life, while the DX-6 only provided about 15% of a boost past a full charge.

For the price, Unu’s DX-6 isn’t a bad choice at all. In fact, you can get it for $70 right now on Amazon as of this writing, which is the best price of any battery case like it. However, we’d still recommend going with the OffGRID Express for $80 if you’re looking for a low-cost battery case for your iPhone 6.
