Moto X Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Hits More U.S. Users

The new Moto X (2014) Android 5.0 Lollipop update has arrived for select users around the globe, on Verizon Wireless here in the United States, and for the Pure Edition, and now today one more carrier is pushing out the latest and greatest software.

One of the first smartphones to receive the brand new Android 5.0 Lollipop update that isn’t a Nexus device was the pure edition unlocked Moto X from Motorola.com, but today Moto X owners will be happy to know the updates have started for more carrier models as well. Verizon was the first to update the new Moto X 2nd Gen to Android 5.0 Lollipop, and now US Cellular is doing the same.

The original Moto X last year was among the first devices to see Android 4.4 KitKat, and this year Motorola did the same thing for the Pure Edition Moto X, but those with carrier versions or last years Moto X have been left behind. This week we’ve seen updates for the Galaxy S5, HTC One M8 and now the LG G3 all to Lollipop, and hopefully more Moto X owners are up next.

Verizon Wireless was actually extremely quick to deliver Android 5.0 Lollipop to the new Moto X way back in November, less than a month after Google released the software, but not all carriers followed behind them. The device is still on the buggy Android 5.0 release, while most manufacturers have been pushing Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, and Google’s busy with Android 5.0.2 and Android 5.1 Lollipop as we speak.

As it stands now the new Moto X for 2014 received the Android 5.0 Lollipop update on Verizon, the unlocked Pure edition, and in the UK, but that’s about it. And the original Moto X is still on Android 4.4 KitKat until further notice.

However, today we learned that US Cellular has started rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop for the new Moto X 2014, and some reports are even claiming this is actually Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, Google’s latest release. That’s unlikely, and we’ll update the moment we know more details about the over the air software upgrade.

Those with a Moto X on US Cellular can look forward to an all new experience with Android 5.0 Lollipop. All the visual elements have been changed with “material design” from Android 5.0, there’s improved notifications, lockscreen notifications, a redesigned notification pulldown bar with new quick toggles, and much more. Add in all the new animations and effects, and it will feel like a brand new device.

There are improved battery saving tools, a redesigned multi-tasking menu, and other general improvements and bug fixes. We’re hearing the US Cellular Moto X Android 5.0 Lollipop update is roughly 400MB in size, so users are recommended to update over WiFi. It shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to complete, and you’ll be on the latest software.

As a reminder, this is a staged and staggered rollout, so it may not arrive to all users at the same time. Users are welcome to head into settings > about phone > and tap check for updates to try and pull it manually, or just wait for the over the air notification to arrive. Hopefully more updates arrive soon from other carriers, and then Motorola moves on to the original Moto X from 2013. Stay tuned for more details.
