LG G3 Android 5.0 Problems Frustrate Owners

Published

on

The LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update is finally here and delivering tons of new features and changes to LG’s flagship smartphone, but the Android 5.0 Lollipop update is also causing problems for many. The update initially started outside of the US, and then this week the AT&T LG G3 finally received Android 5.0 Lollipop, and we’re hearing Sprint is up next.

Back in December of last year LG started pushing out the highly anticipated software update for the LG G3 in Korea, Poland, parts of Europe and more, and now it’s finally arriving in the United States. However, the update for all regions is causing a few small problems for owners, a few which we’ll mention below as well as some potential fixes.

Read: LG G3 Android 5.0 Update: What U.S. Owners Need to Know

The LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update is LG’s first major update to the flagship smartphone since being released last year with Android 4.4 KitKat. And while it delivers a bold new look, fresh neat animations, and improved performance, some users are experiencing problems on their LG G3 after the Android 5.0 Lollipop update.

LG-G3-pretty

Not listed in the long LG G3 Lollipop update’s change logs are the numerous LG G3 Lollipop problems that are plaguing some owners of the device. Over the past few months, and now after the update’s arrival in the United States, we’ve seen numerous complaints about the LG G3 Android 5.0 update, and more are surfacing now that it’s rolling out on AT&T.

Read: Android 5.0 vs Android 4.4 KitKat: What’s New in Lollipop

With Android 5.0 Lollipop on the LG G3 users will notice a few changes immediately. The lockscreen has been completely tweaked and redesigned, as have the notifications in the pulldown drawer. These are better than ever and expandable, but the lockscreen actually lost features with the Android 5.0 update, something many owners aren’t too happy about. It only shows two notifications at a time, and the double tap to open notifications on the lockscreen announced by Google doesn’t work on the G3, you’ll still have to swipe to open.

Numerous threads over at Reddit and other forums have mentioned problems, lack of features, and more after the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the G3, and these problems are frustrating many owners. And no, you can’t get the old on-screen buttons back, the new look is designed for Android 5.0 Lollipop, and while colors can still be changed there’s no going back to the old look.

LG G3 Android 5.0 Problems

As we mentioned above, the lockscreen has changed completely and is missing features it had prior, which isn’t really a bug, but a problem that owners aren’t too happy about. However, the biggest complaint we’ve been seeing is that LG G3 owners on AT&T are being forced to update. Multiple users have stated they did not accept the update, hit dismiss as they wanted to wait and make sure there were no major bugs or problems, yet the device updated anyways.

We’ve heard talks of AT&T making many software updates mandatory, and that appears to be an issue here with the LG G3 Android 5.0 update. Owners were surprised when the device updated on its own, without them accepting the update. This is a problem for those who’ve rooted, installed Xposed modules, or have done certain tweaks to their devices and didn’t want to upgrade.

Nexus6vsLGG3-4

This is on top of complaints about battery life being worse than before, even though we’ve also heard the LG G3 Android 5.0 update has increased battery life and performance. Usage varies from each user, but we’re hearing horror stories of devices getting extremely hot, running slow, apps crashing, and even device reboots.

It’s no secret that Android 5.0.1 Lollipop has a few problems that Google has been working hard to address. They recently released Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, and now even an Android 5.1 Lollipop update is coming in the near future. These could all address some of the battery drain and app crashing, but for now users are stuck waiting for those to arrive.

Before doing a factory data reset we’re hearing clearing out the cache on your device can help fix many of these problems. Advanced users can do this by heading into recovery mode by holding volume down and power at the same time while booting up the phone, going to recovery, and wiping the cache (not device, or you’ll erase everything) but beginners can do something similar by downloading an app called Clean Master. This will clear all update and random files that are not only taking up space, but fragmenting your device storage and slowing down performance.

Nexus6vsLGG3-2

However, it’s always a good idea to reboot your device once or twice following a major update, and in the case of Lollipop, we’re hearing a factory data reset will curb many problems for owners. The problem with that though, is it will completely erase all user data. This means you’ll likely want to save all your important stuff by backing up your device, then performing a factory data reset in settings > general > factory data reset.

For now we’re not seeing any major problems that should concern users enough to not accept the update, but even if you don’t want it, it looks like AT&T is forcing the update to complete anyways. Battery life problems have only surfaced for some users, while others have nothing but good things to say about the LG G3 Android 5.0 update. Drop us a comment below with your experience, problems, or concerns.

Bad battery to extreme depths following the update, also, can no longer directly download files from websites ( used to be able to download and extract mixtapes solely using the device) extremely upset.

Mine now says that it is charging slowly on a USB charger when it is in fact plugged into the wall. Now my phone battery drains quickly and it charges at less than half the speed.
We had buyers remorse over the G3s since about a month after we got them. Now we hate them even more. Grrr

I found my battery draining “crazily” even though my phone was almost always plugged into (Consumer Cellular) charger. It turns out that a 5v .7A charger was just not strong enough to keep up with the STUPID “Lollipop” update.

Many days later, I struggled through a few videos on YouTube that broke down the problem.

Apparently, you need a 5Volt 2.0Amp charger. I tried one, a cheapo from Walgreen’s, and it only worked ONE day. Then I found another in the back room at work, for a Samsung phone our business no longer had. YEP 5V 2.0A – and it has worked flawlessly the past few weeks. You might have better luck finding this type of power plug at Best Buy or on the web.

But that’s how I solved the BS Lollipop upgrade&drain fiasco.

    Do NOT upgrade!
I have the AT&T LG G3 and upgraded my phone last night. Within the last 24 hours I encountered all these problems.
    – battery life is terrible. I mean it.
    – lost cellular data twice today (fixed by restarting phone, twice)
    – Couldn’t connect to Wi-Fi once(fixed by another restart)
    – Big Whatsapp user as most Android users are. You can’t stop notifications from popping on screen. Only way to do so is “completely” turning off notifications for it.
    – In general, I hate the way Notifications work now. I loved how it used to be. Its so bright and you can’t really control much.

    I miss Kit Kat already

I am having the same problems espically with not being able to connect to Wi-Fi . I hate this new update and I went to the store because the LG company told,me to get my phone flashed and the store said they don’t do that and can’t reinstall the kit Kat update. Really hate this phone.

Look at the fine print on charger body: I had to get one that read “5V 2.0Amp” to stop the constant battery drain.

This was after watching a few Youtube videos that broke it down with lengthy explanations (12 mins).

Now my phone CHARGES as it should AND the battery drains slowly, as it should.

      Hope this helps!

Haven’t noticed any battery life issues, but this could be mitigated by the fact that I have both cleanmaster and battery doctor, and run both several times per day.
NOTE: I have noticed the number of apps and “junk” files being closed or deleted has increased significantly
My biggest issue is esthetics. The UI buttons at the bottom are fugly; the home button is now just a damn circle… It reminds me of an iPhone and that bugs the hell outta me.
Granted, it’s a nitpicky complaint… But I really hate everything about iPhones and the fact that my G3 now remotely resembles one makes me hate it a little bit too.

After updating, i get messages saying “Unfortunately, home has stopped” and soon after that one, it says “Unfortunately, system UI has stopped” …i have screen shots of this ..happens evry two days

Battery life, horrible aswell ..butttt i managed to find some useless things running in the background the other day ..go to apps and see which ones are running ..i found “Guest” or something like that running ..after that, i just deleted the guest user itself ..give it a try

Im experiencing the same problems as adressed in the article. My battery life is being drained faster, apps are crashing and my phone is rebooting like crazy. I was excited about this update coming but now i almost regret installing it. On the performance topic: i do not see an improvement. The volume of the speaker, is it just me or does it seem like the phone is pushing out less volume when using the loudspeaker?

Update was forced upon me by AT&T (which only sucked because it crashed my phone during a confrence call). Other than that I have nothing but positives about 5.0. It overheated initially but after I restarted my G3, this has been the coolest my phone has been since I bought it. Also, new interface and battery life are extraordinary!

I’ve had the update on my AT&T G3 for a few days now and I haven’t come up to none of these problems… Battery seems good to me… I’m always on my phone….. Other than that my problem is I wish I knew the new feature I want a list of changes to see what else is new on my phone but so far I think it’s an amazing update, I wish I had the lollipop LockScreen with the phone on the left camera on the right….

Ever since this stupid update (ATT LGG3) automatically updated on my fone, things have been working like crap.
    -Horrible Battery Life
    -Apps Not Working Properly
    -Stupid Buttons
    -Phone Lags
    -Lose WiFi Connection
    This update completely sucks >:p

I am using the ATT G3 and got the update 2 days ago.
    Annoyances:
-lock screen notifications are crappy and hard to customize (only on/off options and priority for some)
-lollipop features are only on notification panel and animations.
-FORCE UPDATED AND I LOST ROOT :(

    Bugs:
-ram leak is terrible causing more lag than stock
    -apps crash all the time
    -phone doesn’t recognize touches sometimes
-phone doesn’t recognize SD card randomly
    -WiFi signal seems to struggle

    Note:
    -I have not had reboots
    -no overheating
    -no charging problems
    -no data connection issues

The only issues I’m encountering are overheating and also when i unlock the screen it just gives me a black screen and I can’t do anything. I’m forced to hard reset the phone every time it happens. It has happened 4 times in two days since the update.

    02/14/2015 at 10:34 pm

A.W.F.U.L. Seriously sucking the life from my battery – to the point that I can’t even use it while plugged in! It’s draining faster than it’s charging. Will try some of the suggestions here to see if there’s improvement.

Experiencing scrolling/swiping issues that did not exist prior to this update. When I swipe it responds like I tapped and goes to whatever the link was. Does this constantly.

Locking up frequently & giving black screens.

Apps are not running properly, particularly Facebook. Scrolling through news feed it will regularly return to the top of the page while in the middle of reading something. Having frequent issues with pinterest as well. Other apps are having more sporadic issues.

Lost features. Unable to use the swipe up & right feature to bring up quick memo, etc. Used quick memo often for screen captures.

Notifications are awful – hate them being ‘stacked’ instead of just a vertical scroll. And the bright obnoxious pop up is so annoying.

The new Gmail layout really reduces the number of messages that can be displayed on the screen at a time. They’re much more spaced out which means more scrolling. Not really a huge problem – unless your scrolling doesn’t work properly!!!

I also had this update forced. Thanks for nothing AT&T. Totally trashed my widgets I spent hours petfecting. I absolutely LOVED this phone – until now! I usually welcome & enjoy change – positive change. Unfortunately the only positive I can come up with so far is that I positively hate it.

Never trade a Kit Kat for a Lolipop.

  27. Lots

    02/15/2015 at 4:12 am

What really bothers me is the missing features.

Guest mode was way better in kitkat, and the kitkat “do not disturb” mode worked perfectly.
Now the phone lags a lot when I try to use guest mode, and the new priority mode is broken, it doesn’t stop viber and snapchat notifications.

The new notifications are worse too, they’re not expendable, and they don’t look that good. The old style was way better.

However, I did not have any noticeable battery problem, and the phone lags less under normal usage.

    Notifications not working
Battery draining faster than i can charge it
    Apps not working
Do not disturb (instead of silent) what a joke
Cant even imagine why do this to g3 owners…

Boy I will say I was so in love with my phone until this update. Unfortunately I am a AT&T customer so regardless of I opted to not update it so so any… and I HATE IT!!! I do not like the navagation buttons, I hate that now the screen shot feature is like all the other phones out, battery life sucks, and takes so long to charge, and now I’m getting ads for downloads in various apps of the phone especially text messaging.. the update is lowered my overall points to this phone.. in hope these tissue gets fixed asap.

Don’t think I could be more unhappy with this update. I declined the update only for att to proceed with update regardless.
Just some of the issues I’ve experienced-
Lg keyboard extremely laggy, takes twice as long to type message.
    Apps crashing like crazy
Around %20 battery life compared to what I got from KitKat.
Phone thinks its plugged into USB and trickle charges when its actually plugged into the wall with original charger.
Knock code only works half of the time.
Missing features I used daily like qmemo from swipe up. Why would lg remove this awesome feature???
Text messages appear read, then unread, over and over, all day long.
I backed up to my SD through lg backup and the backup was gone after updating.
Worst of all att doesn’t even have lollipop in their system so when I called with this lost of issues THEU COULD NOT EVEN TROUBLESHOOT because their system still shows KitKat. I will probably be buying a new phone next month.

Mine downloaded before I really wanted to. But my biggest complaint is like many others the battery life. Before could get me all day plus. Sometimes 2 days. But now only half a day or a little more. It does get hot too. But my biggest beef is that it takes so much longer to charge. It use to be super quick. From 15% battery life to fully charged in 2 hours. Now its 5 plus. Just plugged it in tonight it says 9 HOURS! WHAT!? THATS RIDICULOUS! HATE IT!

Haven’t noticed overheating or battery issues. It actually overheats less however I’ve noticed the display seems not as sharp less pixels or something. I also hate the new design of how messages dont pop up on the lock screen. Also when I type messages now it skips around a lot. 2 thumbs down. Used to love my G3. Thanks AT&T.

HOW TO SET SCREENSHOT CAPABILITY BACK TO BOTTOM OF PHONE:

I found the answer to this in a different thread.

The option you are talking about can be added to the bottom menu bar of the screen. it is a square with a line at the bottom right hand corner made to look like a pencil, or a funny Q.
      Go to> Settings> Display> Home Touch Buttons> Button Combination
On the upper half of the screen drag and drop the square with the line through it into the area for the home touch buttons.

The other way to take a screen shot is to press the power button and volume down button at the same time. It works fine but definitely prefer swiping to quick memo…

This update is dreadful. My battery dies before noon, where it used to last me till I got home at 6 in the evening. I get 5 hrs battery life. Not to mention I absolutely hate the fact that I can no longer use the software way to screen shot. It was so easy just to swipe my finger at the bottom of the screen. Now the only way to screenshot is to use the buttons on the back, which let’s face it, doesn’t work more often than not. This update sucks. Totally unsatisfied customer.

UPDATE: I did a complete wipe and then flashed 4.4.2 via adb then updated to lollipop. Then I did another wipe and set the phone up. After 1 week of use none of the old problems persist.

    Absolutely loving Lollipop 5.0
No battery issues as all stated.

No doubt, Lollipop with Art is butter smooth.

I hate the update. Of course the battery life is nil now. I have been having a big problem with my email. It won’t open some and I have to constantly quit and close my mail. It also takes forever to delete them. I don’t like the look of the lower buttons either. The previous, stop and open pages buttons. I wish they would just undo it.

The update is horrible. It slows the.phone, uses up battery, and changes the format without asking. Why wouldn’t you want to keep customers instead of losing them. I really don’t understand the rationale??? Upset customer!!😡

Since ive updated my lg g3 i have nothing but problems. Slow an , apps not installing unless i clear the play stores cache. But the MOST FRUSTRATING problem i have is with my keyboard quiting out all the time! After dozens of retaps it finally comes up again just to quite out 2 words later! I have tried other keyboards but its just the same. I will probably have to factory reset if clearing my phones cache doesnt help because taking 15 minutes to send a txt or do a google search is nloody ridiculous. And i had compulsary download of this update.

So the issues I’ve had so far are:
    1. Wi-Fi connection had gotten so bad
    2. Home crashes all the time and I need to wait for a while before I can do anything
    3. Me notification LED keeps blinking even though there are no notifications. This really bothers me the most.

My Wifi also did get very slow but only at home. I thought it was my internet provider but my other device’s wifi work fine.
The home crashing has to do with leaving the Google app open when you lock your phone. When you unlock it, Google app/search freezes and only displays a black screen with the home buttons at the bottom. It’s very annoying. So to resolve that just try to remember to close the Google search before you lock the phone.

Since the update my phone is running EXTREMELY slow!! It freezes all the time and my Facebook app no longer works and you can’t uninstall and reinstall it because it cannot be removed from the phone. I’ve had issues with the typing on the keyboars. When I try to begin entering text in a box, the keyboard will not appear. Overall I have had extreme issues with the phone being sluggish! I’m am very upset! I just switched from an Apple phone to the lg and I am regretting it now.

I have had all the issues listed above. My battery life is equivalent to my friend’s iPhone 5 crappy battery. I’ve had many apps crash on me and another thing bothering me is I lost some customizable settings. ie. Entering music information (artist, album, genre, etc.) My phone also freezes and runs very slow. My keyboard acts possessed at times, whether it freeze and stay on the screen or just not appear. I’ve had my Led light act up a couple of times and my messaging has been affected (receiving and sending text messages). The text may come or send late or just never send or be received. Very annoying, looking forward to fixed update. PS…. It took me three minutes to write this and my battery has dropped from 93 to 87%. To save battery I literally have to use my phone for only basics and can’t stay on it for longer than 5 minutes.

My keyboard lags when I type (most of the time not all but it is extremely annoying). When watching a video on YouTube, the sound goes in and out. I have to pause and wait a few minutes than press play to hear the sound again. I have to do this every 3 minutes or so. I love the LG G3 but I’m annoyed with the lagging and sound. Battery life is still the same for me.

The update is really great but there is something I miss a lot which is taking a screenshot by +Quickmemo button :'( and editing and typing on the screen shot

I added the “+Quickmemo” button to the home button but all it does is just opening the app on an empty page I can type on or whatever and not taking a screenshot !! :(

Please find me a solution for this big problem (at least for me :))

The forced update to Lollipop has now removed the WiFi Calling ability as well as outgoing text messaging. T-Mobile has a “possible fix” which is to do a Master Reset and hopefully it will fix the issues. They are not sure if it will correct the problems, but they hopeful! WTF!

    04/10/2015 at 2:48 pm

My G3 just randomly started saying “service disabled” on the lock screen and does not send or receive calls anymore. Went to Sprint, they couldn’t do anything but suggest a full reset of the phone, so now I have to backup 9 gb of photos and files before “attempting” to fix the problem. I could just end up with a wiped phone and STILL not have phone service. Also, my phone has been cased and screen protected since day. Never dropped hard, water, etc..

I have Android 5.0 on my Galaxy Note 3 and every time I screenshot it saves 2 copies in the folder. I don’t like the look of the new screens and I don’t like that the notification icons disappeared from the top of lock screen. Also when charging the battery the charging percentage doesn’t show.on the lock screen anymore. You have to turn on the toolbar battery percentage to see anything. This update is the worst.

Now with this update I get no notifications other than my texts when I am on WiFi. If I want to be notified from my Snapchat or Instagram or even Facebook I have to turn my WiFi off and use my data.. Which I don’t have a lot of in the first place.
My phone used to last me a full day, considering I don’t use it other than texting while I’m at work, but now I have to charge it when I get to work amd by the time I get home after I am back down to below 30%.
Not to mention my Google play store doesn’t even work on WiFi. Half my apps keep trying to update but won’t unless I’m off WiFi, which again, uses all my data and on top of that I have a lot of apps that are ‘too large’ and require WiFi to even download the updates.
Needless to say, I am so not a happy camper right now.

I have an LG G2 – the forced update is causing my email not to sync properly and I can not get rid of the warning that Google Play needs an update or to enable the background data. My phone is now constantly trying to cycle with the circle arrows showing on the top bar. I do not like this update. I have noticed my data usage has spiked from the update. I did clear my Cache files as suggested and rebooted several times. Neither seems to help.

Same here on battery life. The new system automatically set a bunch of features to on, had to enter every single settings screens and options to find and turn off. It set my phone to WiFi calling so was dropping calls and was it was stuck there. T Mobile had to hard reset my phone. My screen wont turn down the brightness all the way so the battery is draining now because of that. It is too bright for my eyes at night. Hate the look of the notifications, plus have to constantly manually clear out apps, that is draining battery as well. Stupid on my part not researching. I have to get a new phone. Maybe that was the point in the first place.

I have had nothing but problems from my LG G3!
I updated it last Sunday (4-19-15) since then I have noticed that my battery life has drained quicker I check it once or twice a day during the 8:30-3:30 hours and by 3:30 it’s already at 50 % or less from just sitting in my pocket my screen is as low as it goes, I keep Wi-Fi off unless I’m using it I also keep blue tooth turned off.

My battery life is worse, the phone overheats with the screen off, sluggish performance even after doing tons of optimization, and horrible wifi web page loading. 4G seems to load faster than any wifi connection atm. Some reason it the apps I have from the play store that won’t load or just keep loading and I never see any response. Gmail is still syncing after this update and I’ve tried everything, soft resetting, rebooting my phone, factory reset, changing settings and nothing is working. I called Verizon and they asked if I updated all my apps after updating since my battery was horrible also and the stability was questionable. I hadn’t because some apps like Facebook reviews say it is horrible. So I followed their suggestion and Booted into SAFE MODE where all apps are disabled and ran it for a day that way as a baseline. It ran much better and the battery lasted all day again. Needless to say, once you reboot it goes back into regular mode and then I had the issues again. So I believe it is an app/apps that are the issue. However battery doctor says the android system is like 80% of battery use, I still think it is an app or a few using the android system improperly causing the issue. I don’t have the time or patience to remove each app one at a time and figure out what the real one is causing problems. I also haven’t done a factory reset. Just sharing my experience and it tells that Android alone isn’t causing the issue. Try safe mode before factory reset – I think you reboot and hold down volume down when you see logo and it pops up a menu. If someone has the time I bet some app or apps can be weeded out as the main issue with battery life. Hope this helps. I can’t wait for 5.1!

I’d love to clear the cache or do a factory reset, if only I could charge it. I love when it tells me to use the charger that came with the phone…which I am. And no other outlet, chord, cube combos work either. Hate my LG G3 now.

When my phone was “working” it was doing that too with the unlock and the odd screen. It became very glitchy. Does anyone know, is there a way to get a replacement phone from LG or our carrier? Feels like bait and switch. We paid a lot of money for one thing, which they’ve turned into something else–that doesn’t work.

    Incredibly frustrated, please fix.

  96. Amber

    07/02/2015 at 10:50 am

I also hate the G3 now! It takes me twice as long to send a text because it likes to throw a random n in between everything because it doesn’t space when I tell it to. It’s 12:46pm right now. When I left for work at 8:00am my phone was at a battery life of 98%. It’s sitting at 7% now and all I have done is texted a few people and used snap chat a few times. I charge my phone at least 3-4 times a day. The over heating is ridiculous, too! Sometimes my screen is so hot to the touch that it actually burns my fingers or face. I also agree with the swipe keyboard effect. Sometimes it will put the space in there for me, and others it wont. It also likes to auto correct me when it’s not needed. When I type in the number 10, it auto corrects with 1130 and I’m not sure why it does that at all but it does that with a few other’s as well.

The new update sucks and I’m switching back to the iPhone.

Well after finally getting the update 2 days ago which I had to do manually mind (dual-sim user which I’m slightly beginning to regret), noticed that widgets in the notification bar (really only Quick Remote) cannot be loaded. In addition I have shorter battery life and more frequent overheating. Conversely this seems however to result in faster charging for the moment although I just hope that if we don’t get 5.1 that Marshmallow is absolutely perfect upon release.

I know this is an old thread, but I refused to upgrade when Lollipop was first made available to me in early Feb. It now appears that the G3 and G4 will be updated to Marshmallow, and my question is this: Will I be able to update straight from 4.42, or would I have to install the still pushed on me update of 5.0 from Feb first, then move to 6.0?

  100. nate

    11/13/2015 at 7:24 pm

Update has basically ruined my phone. If I use data or wifi it will go into a boot loop. Sometimes it just does it randomly. Basically anything even slightly RAM intensive or network intensive will cause it. Battery life also sucks now. I understand that doing a factory reset might help, but almost all of the forums ive been to have shown no successful results with that path, so there doesn’t seem a point in wasting 3-4 hours backing up and then restoring my phone. It would be nice if AT&T didnt force this lame update on everyone, and it would also be nice if LG at least gave us an ETA for an actual fix. My guess would be that theyre putting it off because they just want us to buy the G4 now, since phone companies are notorious for “made-to-break” items. My solution so far has been to just keep the phone plugged in to a portable charger, but that only lasts for about half of what the phone’s battery life alone should last. With most companies when there are bugs this common, they actually try to show that they are putting actual effort into patching said bugs, but then again most phone companies kind of blow.

I was forced to update. Was absolutely happy and in love with my Lg g3 until this disaster called lollipop. I won’t go into everything that I hate about it but my worst problem is that my gmail notification is no longer working. I only get the emails if I only refresh the notification alert option (turn off/on) Anyone know how to fix this? Is there are way we can communicate to LG that this update is major failure and mistake? I am so hating my phone now that it’s making me sad.
