New Drake Mix Tape Surprises Fans

The new Drake Album If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late arrived as a surprise release after a short announcement on Twitter late Thursday night.

Following in the musical footsteps of Beyoncé and Lil Wayne, this 17-track Drake Album arrived online with no warning. Although we are used to consuming music online where new music can come to life for millions with the push of a button most albums still come with a release date announced well in advance.

The new Drake album features 17-tracks including collaborations with PARTYNEXTDOOR, Lil Wayne and Travi$ Scott. The album isn’t an ode to mobile tech, but the release comes as a surprise just like the Beyonce album in 2013 and more recently the Lil Wayne mixtape Sorry 4 The Wait.

The release of If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late is available on iTunes for $12.99 and it was on SoundCloud for a short time before Drake pulled it, possibly because of how you can download music from Soundcloud to your iPhone. The album also quickly arrived on Amazon and on Google Play.

The surprise Drake mixtape is also available on Spotify where users can stream the full album and with the right Spotify tips and tricks they can download it to their phone and make it sound better than normal.

You can listen to the new Drake mixtape If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late in the player above, even without a Spotify subscription. Right now there is no physical copy of the album that you can buy, which isn’t shocking considering the surprise release. Many albums announced well in advance include leaked tracks and even the full album after someone in the production pipeline shares a copy.

This may not be a full studio album, even though it is a lengthy list of tracks. If that is the case and this is just a new Drake mix tape, we could see another major release without a lengthy wait. Drake confirmed that Views From the 6 is the name of his next studio album.

On the three-minute track Energy, Drake raps about real problems, which is why he doesn’t go online. He continues, talking about people “asking for the code to his WiFi” so they can post to their Facebook timeline before saying he’ll call a Uber because he has somewhere to be.

Shortly after the announcement “New Drake” and 10 Bands, the name of a track on the album trended on Twitter. On Twitter users were quick to share positive feedback on the new Drake mix tape, and others can’t wait to listen to the album.

The week started with the Grammy’s and now it comes to an end with a new Drake mix tape that goes back to the surprise release strategy that served Beyoncé so well in 2013. It will be interesting to see if this trend picks up in 2015.
