Why You Shouldn’t Buy the iPhone 6 Plus Right Now

The iPhone 6 Plus is one of the best smartphones on the market and a device that we highly recommend. Just not this week. This week is one of the worst times to buy the iPhone 6 Plus. Those of you that can hold off should.

Back in September, Tim Cook and Co. took the stage and announced two new iPhone 6 models. A 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and a larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. Both devices arrived with an assortment of upgrades including larger displays, better processors, improved cameras, sleek metal designs, Apple’s new iOS 8 operating system, and a whole lot more.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are two of the best selling smartphones in the world. They’re also two of the best smartphones you can buy. And there they will remain until Apple decides to take the curtain down from around its 2015 iPhone, probably the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

We’ve been pushing friends, family and readers to the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus since its launch in September but the current climate makes the iPhone 6 Plus an extremely hard device to recommend. Right now is a terrible time to buy the iPhone 6 Plus.

If you’re in the hunt for a new smartphone right now, and you can wait a week or so to buy, you should. Here’s why you shouldn’t buy the iPhone 6 Plus right now.

Samsung Galaxy S6

In our eyes, there are two big reasons why you should hold off on buying the iPhone 6 Plus, at least until Monday. The first is the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S6, a serious iPhone 6 competitor that’s expected to be a huge upgrade over last year’s model.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 launch date is set for this Sunday, March 1st, and there you’ll find out about Samsung’s Next Big Thing. From what we’ve seen, the Galaxy S6 is poised to become Samsung’s biggest Galaxy S release since the Galaxy S3. It’s expected to make some huge changes and take some big risks to help revitalize its struggling mobile business and catapult the Galaxy S back onto the same pedestal as the iPhone.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 rumor cycle has matured to the point that many important details are all but confirmed ahead of its announcement at Mobile World Congress 2015 in Barcelona, Spain. Here’s what we know about the Galaxy S6, so far:

• 5.1-inch Quad HD display
• Premium design with metal and perhaps glass
• 16MP camera with OIS
• Exynos 64-bit Octo-core Processor
• 32GB / 64GB / 128GB storage
• Touch-based fingerprint sensor
• Four color options
• Release on all five major U.S. carriers
• Tons of accessories
• Android 5.0 Lollipop with trimmed down TouchWiz
• Galaxy S6 Edge with a curved display

This phone is clearly a response to all of the criticism that Samsung’s gotten over the years about plastic designs and so-so software. It’s also a phone that we think will be worth a wait. One week is absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things. There’s no chance that March 1st comes and goes without a Galaxy S6 launch.

We think there’s a big chance for regret if you don’t wait for the Galaxy S6 to arrive and we think there’s enough incentive to take a rain check on the iPhone 6 Plus, at least for a few days. The iPhone 6 Plus will be there waiting for you on Monday if you decide that Samsung’s phone isn’t what you want.

HTC One M9

The Samsung Galaxy S6 is expected to come in two different versions, one regular and one curved. The curved model, a Galaxy S6 Edge, might be tempting to some of you looking hard at the iPhone 6 Plus. These two aren’t the only options that are set to appear on March 1st though.

HTC, the company behind last year’s HTC One M8 rival for the iPhone and Galaxy S, is also scheduled to announce a brand new smartphone dubbed HTC One M9. The HTC One M9, like the Galaxy S6, is rumored to have a number of big time upgrades on board.

The HTC One M9 will reportedly have a 5-inch 1080p HD display, a powerful 8-core processor with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, Android 5.0 Lollipop with Sense 7 UI, a new 20MP camera, design tweaks, and more. HTC One M9 rumors also point to a bigger 2,900 mAh battery for all-day usage. In other words, it should improve on the HTC One M8, a device that is considered one of the best Android phones of all time.

HTC’s also expected to have a larger HTC One M9 Max up its sleeve though it’s not clear if the company will announce it on March 1st or if it will wait to bring it to market.

The device, known as the HTC One M9 Plus or HTC One M9 Max, is expected to be a direct competitor for the Galaxy Note and iPhone 6 Plus. The mere possibility of a large screen HTC One M9 makes March 1st a day worth waiting for.

Here’s the skinny. Unless you absolutely have to buy a new smartphone this week, we suggest waiting for March 1st to arrive before deciding on your next device.

The iPhone 6 Plus will still be a great phone at the beginning of March but it will have increased competition from two devices that should be two of the best smartphones from 2015. That kind of choice should be appealing to all smartphone shoppers, not just those looking into buying the iPhone 6 Plus. If you can, pass on buying the iPhone 6 Plus this week. You’ll be in a much better position if you do.
