How to Turn Off Sounds in the Facebook iPhone App

Published

on

A recent update to the Facebook iPhone app re-enables in-app sounds, so here’s how to turn them off if you find it annoying.

In the Facebook app, whenever you navigate around to different menus or refresh the News Feed, there are little “pop” sounds that play, which can be a bit annoying for some users, especially considering that they don’t do anything to improve the experience, which is why it’s probably a good idea to disable the sounds.

I’ve never understood the purpose of in-app sounds. Maybe they’re there to confirm that you did actually tap on that one button, or maybe they’re just there to add a bit of flare to the app, but in any case, if you just find them plain annoying, you can disable them to go back to a simpler time.

Lucky for you, it’s really easy to disable the in-app sounds in the Facebook iPhone app. Here’s how to do it.

How to Turn Off In-App Sounds in the Facebook iPhone App

To disable those annoying sounds in Facebook, follow these simple steps:

  • Open up the Facebook app.
  • Tap on the More tab down at the bottom.
  • Scroll all the way down and tap on Settings.

  • Tap Sounds.
  • Tap on the toggle next to In-App Sounds to turn it from green to gray.

At that point, you’re good to go and will no longer hear those annoying “pop” sounds while using the app.

However, Facebook is notorious for changing back features with new app updates, so be prepared to keep this tutorial in your bookmarks, because Facebook could easily re-enable in-app sounds automatically when you update the app.

Other Facebook Tips & Tricks

If you’re still in the Facebook app and want to learn about other ways to make the experience better on iPhone, there are several more Facebook tips and tricks that you can use.

One trick that many users don’t know is that uninstalling the Facebook iPhone app and reinstalling it can clear up a lot of storage space on your device. It might seem odd that deleting an app and reinstalling can free up storage space on your iPhone, but it’s true. Apps build up a cache over the course of use, and this cache takes up storage space. Eventually, it can get to the point where it’s taking up a gigabyte or two, especially if you use the app frequently every day.

By deleting the app, you’re deleting all of that cache, and reinstalling the app starts a clean slate.

You can also delete Facebook messages without having it marked as read. This is useful if you want to delete a message, but don’t want the sender to know that you read it, since clicking on a message to open it will send a read receipt to the sender.

In the end, you can also just resort to deleting your Facebook account entirely.

Facebook used to be a magical place where college students were able to connect with each other in a way that was never thought possible. However, many will argue that the social network has turned into a cesspool filled with immature teenagers and folks who shouldn’t even be near a computer in the first place.

Don’t get me wrong, Facebook is a great place to show friends and family members what you’re up to, especially those who live far away that you’re not able to connect to in real life, but if it isn’t worth the mess of stupid posts that you see daily, on top of the many privacy concerns, there’s a way you can put an end to it all right now, and that’s by deleting your account for good.

    Thanks, Craig. This really helped.

Just a heads up, though: You may want to update this because FB changed the menus around.

    The change doesn’t “stick”

iOS 10 on a 6s. I toggle the switch to off. By the next day the sound is back and the setting change did not stick.
