Samsung Galaxy S6 Release Date: What We Know So Far

Published

on

On March 1st, Samsung announced the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge confirming both devices for an arrival on US carriers. Half a month later, the US Galaxy S6 release date and Galaxy S6 Edge release date remains missing in action. With buyers looking for answers, we want to take a look at everything we know so far about the US Galaxy S6 release date.

Earlier this month, Samsung took the stage in Barcelona, Spain to show off its brand new flagship smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are the company’s Galaxy S5 successors and they are set to bring a whole new design, an upgraded display, improved cameras, new TouchWiz, Android 5.0 Lollipop, and more to buyers around the world and here in the United States.

Samsung and its carrier partners were quick to confirm the arrival of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Some even confirmed the device ahead of the March 1st launch date. However, for reasons unknown, the US Galaxy S6 release date and US Galaxy S6 Edge release date both remain uncertain as we push closer to Samsung’s April 10th release date for both devices.

April 10th will serve as the first release date for both devices. Samsung says that 20 countries will get the devices that day but it has yet to confirm those specific countries. The United States could certainly be among the first to get the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge but if that’s the case, US carriers aren’t saying. Details are hard to come by but that doesn’t mean the canvas is blank.

We’ve seen a number of new details emerge in the past two weeks and today, we want to paint a picture for those looking to buy the Galaxy S6 Edge or the Galaxy S6. This takes a look at what we know right now about the Galaxy S6 release date in the United States.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Release Date Green Lit

While carriers remain silent, we know that the Galaxy S6 release date for the United States has made significant progress behind the scenes. Samsung Galaxy S6 models for AT&T, Sprint, U.S. Cellular, T-Mobile, and Verizon have all passed through the FCC, a necessary step before the device can be sold inside the United States.

We’ve also seen several US bound Galaxy S6 models receive their Bluetooth certification, another necessary step ahead of release. So, from what we can tell, the Galaxy S6 release date for the United States across major carriers is green lit. It should only be a matter of time before US carriers announce their official Galaxy S6 release dates.

Galaxy S6 Edge Release Date Green Lit

The same goes for the Galaxy S6 Edge. We’ve seen the Galaxy S6 Edge models for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon all cruise through the FCC on their way to shelves. A few have also gotten their Bluetooth certifications. Again, this is a sign that the Galaxy S6 Edge release date is inching closer. With a few weeks to go before April 11th, US carriers are in position to get their wares out in a timely manner.

Galaxy S6 Release Date Rumor

While we’ve seen a number of Galaxy S6 filings hint at fast-tracked Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge release dates in the United States, the Galaxy S6 release dates themselves remain a mystery at this point. In fact, we only have one rumor and that rumor is from the hit-or-miss publication PhoneArena.

The publication claims that a source has told it that the US Galaxy S6 release date will take place on April 11th, a day after the start of Galaxy S6 sales in 20 countries around the world. April 11th is a Saturday which makes this rumor a bit odd. Carriers typically release their phones during the working week rather than on the weekend. For instance, last year’s US release took place on April 11th which was a Friday. Apple is also well known for its Friday release dates.

Exciting Galaxy S6 Cases

This date is supposedly for the four major US carriers AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon. U.S. Cellular’s confirmed Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge releases for April but the carrier hasn’t outlined a specific date. It’s usually never too far behind its rivals.

Release dates for the other Galaxy S6 carriers Boost, Cricket and MetroPCS remain out of reach though smaller carriers typically are a little bit slower to the release. The Galaxy S6 Edge will not be coming to smaller pre-paid or regional US carriers, at least not at the start.

Nothing is confirmed but everything is pointing to a fairly quick Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge release date in the United States. We wouldn’t circle April 10th or April 11th just yet but there’s a good chance we’ll see someone release this device in and around those dates.

Verizon Galaxy S6 Pre-Orders

Verizon recently became the first US carrier to announce specific Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 release details. The Verizon Galaxy S6 release date hasn’t been confirmed but the carrier says that it will be taking pre-orders on April 1st.

Unfortunately, Verizon left out the other pertinent details including price, colors, and storage. Those details could arrive ahead of the pre-order date though with a date confirmed, Verizon can now take its time with an announcement.

With Verizon now open about its Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge pre-orders, it should only be a matter of time before we see these remaining carriers confirm their own release details.

Galaxy S6 Price

Colors and storage remain a mystery in the United States though as a reminder, the Galaxy S6 price was narrowed down immediately after Samsung’s announcements.

A T-Mobile ARV that we discovered shortly after launch hints at a $699 price tag for the Galaxy S6. It doesn’t necessarily confirm the off-contract price but it does mean that carrier pricing should fall somewhere between $600 and $700. On-contract prices remain missing in action and so does the Galaxy S6 Edge price point.

Galaxy-S6-6

The Galaxy S6 Edge is more expensive in Europe which means that it should be more expensive here in the United States. The only question is, how much more expensive will it be? The Galaxy Note Edge is $100 more expensive than the Galaxy Note 4 and we’ve suggested that we could see Samsung and its partners do something similar here with the Galaxy S6 Edge.

With pre-orders coming to the US on April 1st and a release date set for April 10th in some countries, we should start to see carriers confirm details in the second half of March. Prospective buyers in the US will want to keep their eyes peeled.

Galaxy S6 Active

According to SamMobile, a reliable publication, Samsung is working on a new Galaxy S6 Active that will debut on AT&T in the United States.

AT&T’s Galaxy S6 Active (SM-G890A) will reportedly have a 5.1 inch Quad-HD 2560 x 1440 (2K) display, an 8-core Exynos 7420 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of on-board storage and a 16-megapixel rear and 5 megapixel front setup.

Galaxy S6 Display

The Galaxy S6 Active design will evidently be a little bit taller, a few millimeters wider, and slightly thicker. There’s a reason for that. It will supposedly come with a much larger 3,500 mAh battery and an IP67 certification which will make it water and dust resistant like the Galaxy S5.

It’s not clear when this device will arrive though we would not expect it to hit the United States on the first Galaxy S6 release date. Instead, it will likely come a few weeks, if not a few months, later.
