iOS 8 Cydia Tweaks: How to Hide App Icons

Published

on

If you have a jailbroken iPhone or iPad and are wanting to hide some your unused app icons on your home screen, here are some iOS 8 Cydia tweaks that allow you to do that.

There are many tricks you can pull on your iOS device when its jailbroken, thanks to the almost endless supply of jailbreak tweaks you can download. You can change the look of iOS and even change how certain actions execute in order to make it exactly how you want it.

One of the biggest requests that jailbreakers want is the ability to hide app icons from appearing on the home screen. If you’re like me and never use the stock apps that come with your iPhone or iPad, then they’re really just taking up space on your home screen, but you can easily hide them if your device is jailbroken.

Of  course, you could easily just stick all of your unused apps into a folder and put it off to the side, but if you want them gone out of your sight for good, jailbreaking is the only way to do it.

So here are a handful of iOS 8 Cydia tweaks that have the ability to hide app icons from the home screen.

Springtomize

Perhaps one of the most popular iOS 8 Cydia tweaks that has the ability to hide app icons on the home screen is Springtomize. The tweak is on version 3, currently, so you’ll see it appear in Cydia as “Springtomize 3,” and it’s fully compatible with iOS 8.

Springtomize essentially gets rid of the need for multiple single-purpose jailbreak tweaks and puts them all into one app that you can buy for just a couple of dollars. It’s certainly one of the best deals in the Cydia store.

It does a whole lot of stuff, including resizing icons, creating nested folders, changing fonts, and of course hiding unused app icons. To do this, just go into Springtomize and navigate to Icons > Hide Icons. From there, tap on the apps that you want hidden from the home screen.

Of course, these apps will still be accessible from Spotlight Search, as they’re not uninstalled from your device, but their app icons are simply hidden from view.

Hide Apps Without Tweaks

If you don’t feel like paying a couple of dollars for Springtomize, or you just don’t want yet another jailbreak tweak clogging up your iPhone, there are other tricks that you can use to hide certain app icons, one of which doesn’t require a jailbroken device at all.

One trick involves changing the system files deep in iOS’s file system to hide app icons from the home screen. Now, if you’re not comfortable with doing this, then it’s probably best to try out the next trick or just opt for Springtomize. Otherwise, this involves changing around some system files.

To do this, you’ll need iFile, which lets you dig deep into iOS’s file system and is available in Cydia for a few dollars. Once you’re in iFile, go to the root folder (press “back” a bunch of time until you can’t go back any further. Next, tap on Applications and find the app that you want to hide from the home screen. Find the “Info.plist” file and open it up. From there, enter in this code, save it, and then respring your device:

<key>SBAppTags</key>
<array>
<string>hidden</string>
</array>

Another method for hiding app icons doesn’t require a jailbreak, and we actually discussed this trick a few days ago.

It’s really simple to do and only takes a few seconds per app icon that you want to hide. Before you start, though, you need to a full home screen of apps and the app you want to hide needs to be on the second screen. From there, here’s how to do it:

  • Tap and hold on the app and drag it to the first screen. Hold it over on top of another app to make a folder.
  • Drop the app into the folder.
  • Do not leave the folder or leave edit mode. Now tap and hold on the app again and drag it down to the dock. Let go of the app and you have successfully hid the app from your home screen.

The only problem with this method is that the app icons will reappear whenever you restart your iOS device, so keep this in mind if you’re thinking about using this method.
