Epic Batman: Arkham Knight PS4 Bundle Coming

Microsoft’s Xbox One all-in-one entertainment system and Sony’s PS4 video game console will both get versions of Batman: Arkham Knight of their own, but Sony is taking it a step further. Only PS4 shoppers will be able to buy the game and a custom console together this coming June.

Sony announced the new Batman: Arkham Knight PS4 bundle this week. Until the company’s post on its PlayStation Blog, it was unclear whether the company had any plans to offer something related to Batman: Arkham Knight that gamers couldn’t get anywhere else. Sony has offered extras for past editions of the Batman: Arkham franchise.

Officially, the new console is called the Limited Edition Batman: Arkham Knight PS4 Bundle. Those who purchase the PS4 bundle will get a single wireless controller and console to match. Internally, they are both identical to what PS4 bundle buyers get today. However, their shells are both painted a light gray. This is the first time Sony has offered a Limited Edition themed PS4 that users didn’t have to outbid each other to buy. The top plate of the console – the casing that users remove to add more storage – has Batman’s silhouette along with the PlayStation logo.

Sony describes the console in the Batman: Arkham Knight PS4 bundle as Steel Grey. Users who buy the $449 console won’t get a free vertical stand like the one pictured, but will get a physical copy of Batman: Arkham Knight included. Normally, $399 gets users a PS4 with a free game, $50 lower than what the Limited edition Batman: Arkham Knight bundle is going for. Sony says it will also offer a version of the PS4 in Jet Black with a copy of the game for $399. Both Amazon and Best Buy are taking pre-orders for the console bundles.

Batman: Arkham Knight isn’t scheduled to arrive on store shelves until June 23rd, but already it’s turning into a hotly contested title. Batman: Arkham Knight is the finale of a franchise that kicked off when Batman: Arkham Asylum shocked critics by being a decent game. Past titles in the Batman franchise weren’t decent at all. For the rest of the year Microsoft is leaning heavily on video games that are only available on its console. With a light release schedule, Sony is leaning on smaller titles and Batman: Arkham Knight. Microsoft has used the same tactic in the past. For example, all content for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare won’t arrive on the PS4 until May, but it’s been available on the Xbox One for days.

PS4 users won’t be the only ones getting the game this June, but subsequent updates are coming early to PS4 users before they arrive anywhere else. Sony says this extra early content will include different character skins for Batman and the Batmobile, which will feature heavily in this game. What’s more, PS4 owners won’t have to wait for access to the content at all – they’ll have it on day one. Besides these extra, Sony says it can’t wait to share more about “special content” it has coming for PS4 users. The company’s pre-order page for the game and consoles include information about an exclusive scarecrow mission and skins for making Batman look like his Justice League 3000 and classic TV counterparts.

GameStop is already taking pre-orders for Batman: Arkham Knight. A basic copy of the game will cost Xbox One and PS4 users $60 on its own. GameStop and Amazon are also taking pre-orders for a special Batmobile edition of the game that includes some extras and a transforming Batmobile statue. Originally, Batman: Arkham Knight was scheduled for release on June 3rd.
