LG G2 Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Problems & Fixes

Published

on

Over the past few months LG and its partnering carriers have been busy pushing the LG G2 Android 5.0 Lollipop update out to owners around the globe. And while most of the feedback has been positive, the Android 5.0 Lollipop update is also causing problems for many. The LG G2 in the US received Android 5.0 in February on AT&T, it hit Verizon in late March, and starting today is rolling out to T-Mobile owners.

The updates first started outside of the US at the beginning of 2015 after a few regions received the same update for the newer LG G3, but once that finished LG moved on to the prior years flagship device, that being the G2 from 2013. However, the update is causing some problems for owners, a few which we’ll mention below as well as ways or tips to fix them.

Read: 5 Things to Do Before the LG G2 Lollipop Update

The LG G2 Android 5.0 update is much needed, considering the initial update to Android 4.4 KitKat last year introduced loads of issues for millions of owners. Most of those have been fixed over the past year, but the new Android 5.0 update is bringing a few of them back. Read on for what we know about the update, how you’ll benefit from it, as well as some potential issues you may run into.

With Android 5.0 Lollipop on the LG G2 users will notice a few changes immediately. The lockscreen has been completely tweaked and redesigned, as have the notifications in the pulldown drawer. These are better than ever before and expandable, but the lockscreen actually lost features with the Android 5.0 update, something many owners aren’t too happy about. It only shows two notifications at a time, and the double tap to open notifications on the lockscreen announced by Google doesn’t work on the G2, you’ll still have to swipe  or unlock to interact with it.

While there are a lot of changes and improvements, there are also bugs. Not listed in the long LG G2 update change logs are the numerous LG G2 Lollipop problems that are plaguing some owners of the device. Over the past few months, and now after the update’s arrival in the United States, we’ve seen numerous complaints about the LG G2 Android 5.0 update, and more are surfacing now that it has arrived for Verizon, and T-Mobile.

Numerous threads over at Reddit and other forums have mentioned problems, lack of features, and more after the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the G2, and these problems are frustrating many owners. And no, you can’t get the old on-screen buttons back, the new look is designed for Android 5.0 Lollipop, and while colors can still be changed there’s no going back to the old buttons

LG G2 Android 5.0 Problems

As we mentioned above, the lockscreen has changed completely and is missing features it had prior, which isn’t really a bug, but a problem that owners aren’t too happy about. We’ve heard talks of AT&T making many software updates mandatory, and that appears to be an issue here with the LG G2 and G3 Android 5.0 update. They’re installing on their own for some, without users accepting them. Owners were surprised when the device updated on its own, without them accepting the update. This is a problem for those who’ve rooted, installed Xposed modules, or have done certain tweaks to their devices and didn’t want to upgrade.

Users have taken to Twitter with frustration, posting many of their problems.

https://twitter.com/mmittentag/status/587973361738866688

But then we’re also seeing comments like this:

Since the LG G2 update we’ve heard reports of devices overheating, app crashes, freezing, and the biggest issue being battery life. Users are reporting the device rebooting multiple times per day, battery draining faster than ever, and just general instability all around. That said, we’re also hearing a lot of praise since the update, where many owners love the Lollipop additions, improved performance or notification bar, and better battery life.

It’s no secret that Android 5.0 Lollipop has a few problems that Google has been working hard to address. They recently released an Android 5.1 Lollipop update, and we’re even seeing signs of Android 5.1.1 as well. These could all address some of the battery drain and app crashing, but for now users are stuck waiting for those to arrive. Android 5.0 has a memory leak issue that is causing apps to crash, freeze, start to slow or lag and more. This was thought to be fixed in 5.1 which isn’t on the G2 yet, but we’re hearing will be solved in Android 5.1.1 Lollipop whenever that arrives.

Battery Life

While some are reporting excellent smooth performance and better battery life, as Lollipop should be more efficient and make the phone run better, others are claiming the battery just drains extremely quick. This can likely be caused by 3rd party apps not supporting Android 5.0 Lollipop. Head into settings > battery, and see if any particular apps are draining your battery faster than normal. It will be at the top of the chart.

Another thing that will almost certainly fix the battery life issues is clearing the data and cache of the device. Updates are big, have a lot of files, and fragment software similar to Windows computers. Clearing the cache can help, and your best bet is actually a factory data reset, which we’ll mention below.

Head into settings > general > storage > wait for cached data to calculate, and clear the cached data. Beginners can do something similar by downloading an app called Clean Master. This will clear all update and random files that are not only taking up space, but fragmenting your device storage and slowing down performance.

WiFi Problems

A smaller problem we’re still hearing a little bit about is WiFi issues after the update. And while this probably isn’t related to the update, a few steps could potentially fix it. Try forcing the LG G2 to forget the WiFi network that’s posing problems. Head to the desired connection in Settings and long press then select the Forget Network option. Once that’s done, users will then need to reconnect to the Wi-Fi network with the password. This could re-initiate the connection and fix WiFi drops and issues.

LGG2_003-575x383

Reboot Your Phone

One thing many owners need to know is the phone needs a little “cool down” period for all the apps to optimize, and sort everything out. Give it a reboot or two, not just the first one when the update finished, and things should ease up. Battery life may improve after 24-48 hours too, so don’t go complaining too quick. If you’re getting random app force-closes, lag, problems with text messages coming or going, or just some general issues you’ll be surprised to see how many of these small little things get fixed by a quick reboot of your phone. Not just the reboot option when you hold power, but actually turning it off, waiting a minute or two, and turning it back on. This typically fixes most small bugs when family members ask me questions, so give that a try too.

Factory Data Reset

Doing a factory data reset is your last resort, but to be honest, probably your best option and what’ I’d recommend. I always do factory resets on all my devices after (or before) updates, to start with a fresh clean slate. This will erase all user data, apps, pictures and more, so be sure to backup all your data.

With Android 5.0 Lollipop Google has a new feature called Tap n Go restore which will actually restore all your apps, data, WiFi connections and more within minutes. It’s extremely easy to do, and makes wiping your phone and setting everything up again easier than ever before. So try a factory data reset, which will likely solve almost all the problems on the LG G2 since the 5.0 update. We’ve seen countless comments where the update runs great, and even more where users reported that all the problems were fixed after doing a reset.

Read: How to Reset Your Android Smartphone or Tablet

Users can follow the guide above for the best information. That said, on the LG G2 head into settings > tap the general column and the top, and scroll down to Backup & reset and select this. It will remind you to have all the backup sync options checked, and it’s a good idea to check and let most of those sync first. At the very bottom is the factory data reset. Tap this, follow the instructions and do a factory data reset. If you have the option, don’t wipe the micro-SD card, as that likely isn’t a part of the problem.

All said and done some problems are likely caused by apps, others could be due to issues with Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. Google’s already released Android 5.1 with fixes, and 5.1.1 Lollipop could be coming soon. And while this is good news for LG G2 owners, don’t expect those updates to arrive for at least another two months or more. Drop us a comment below with any questions, concerns, fixes, or feedback.

Thanks for the news on the update for the update. A Verizon tech had me remove Clean Master and the CM battery saver counterpart as well as removing the Faceboot app in favor of the Facebook mobile site. This seems to be working saving my battery and the phone is not running hot..Typing all of this a day ago would have killed my fully charged phone.

I had issues with my wifi settings freezing up and not working a few minor glitches and battery life and I did not like the format. So I tried to do a factory reset try and receive the old format back.well it did not erase the update but the issue with my wifi gliches went away and running smoothly now but I can get used to it

Didn’t work for me. Can’t turn phone off now; keeps recycling to LG screen then shutting off. Phone sluggish. Have removed as many apps as possible, removed all widgets except weather and calendar. Took 4 hours for phone to come on yesterday. Is there a way to force Google not to reinstall updates and apps after reset?

Ugh, couldn’t agree more. Seems like every time I want to use my phone, I end up pissed off and all around frustrated. Insanely slow, constantly freezing, hitting the “wrong” buttons since it’s all ass backwards feeling. Hate it.

As I did too. Loved my LG g2 b4 and then this update came along and totally screwed evrything up. Can I undo the update do u know?

      • Dave

        06/04/2015 at 4:19 am

You can’t really undo the update. Even if you ‘root’ the phone and flash it back to Kit Kat, your provider will attempt to push Lollipop to your phone over and over again. They claim it’s because of security updates, but I think it’s because Lollipop was designed to make your phone perform poorly so that you buy a new phone. Otherwise, why not just update security protocols of Kit Kat??? Makes no sense.

Battery overheats constantly and doesn’t last more than 4-5 hours even in stand-by. I checked what’s been draining it, and it turns out Verizon’s own Support and Protection app has been a royal battery hog, draining 75-80% of the juice. It turns on even after force stop. I have to turn it off manually every time I wake my phone. This seems to help battery life somewhat, but I don’t expect to see more than marginal improvement.

At this rate, I am ready to sell this phone and buy a refurbished phone for cheap to ride out the last few months of the contract and then take my business elsewhere. This is the second Android phone that has been destroyed by Verizon’s Android update. I say Verizon’s because this is not the stock Google lollipop os. Verizon gets the original OS and then kills it with its mediocre programming.

As much as I hate to admit it, I am ready to make the switch to an iPhone or to another provider that actually provides customer support.

Does it help to Disable the app in the Application Manager? Mine has been disabled since I got the phone and wonder if they’re still using up my battery without my knowledge even after disabling them.

            06/23/2015 at 10:44 am

Does it strike anyone else as extremely odd that they can modify the speed of charging via software tweaks??? I feel if they can do that, then what keeps them from modifying the speed of DISCHARGING via software??? So if that’s the case, if they wanted people to upgrade their phones to go away from Lollipop, wouldn’t they just change the software to make your phone constantly discharge more energy???

            Also, complaint number 23:

I hook my phone into my car stereo for music while I drive. The audio driver in my LG G2 isn’t the greatest in terms of power output, so in order for my car to get a good signal, I have to turn up the headphone volume to 100%. Sometimes (but not all the time), the phone will AUTOMATICALLY force my volume to 50% with a huge white advisory indicating that prolonged listening at high volumes can damage hearing. Moreover, IT WON’T LET ME TURN THE VOLUME BACK UP TO 100% BUT FORCES ME TO STAY AT 50%. The only way to stop this is to unplug and then re-plug the headphone jack. So the stupid phone already flashes that warning similar to this when I first plug in a headphone jack, but with Lollipop, they’re ACTIVELY TURNING MY VOLUME DOWN FOR ME, which is new, and EXTREMELY IRRITATING.

HEY GOOGLE, YOU ALREADY SUCK AT PREDICTING MY NEXT WORD WHEN I TYPE, SO STOP INVADING WHAT YOU THINK IS BEST FOR US. IF I WANT TO GO DEAF LISTENING TO MUSIC THEN THAT’S MY CHOICE.

This update SUCKS!!!..it changed my home screen icons…changed messages and now I can’t swipe close the apps from my home screen!!!!..so now they’re just running using up my data!!!…this keeps going on I’m going somewhere else…we’re getting screwed with this update shit!!!..I didn’t update it..it did it on it’s own!!!..that’s BS!!!!

I TOTALLY hate the new update as well and feel that phone company should have “warned” users about changes it would cause. In my case, i bought the new LG G2 phone less that 2 years ago, switching to it from an iphone because the key board was much easier for me to read and use. Among other problems, this awful new update changed the keyboard to look just like an iphone’s!! My battery also lasts about half as long as before, my email and my games freeze and “aren’t responding” several times a day which NEVER happened before, and many other issues.

        06/16/2015 at 11:28 am

I sincerely hope Android developers and Google know how vehement the (justified) complaining is. Granted, every Android update I’ve experienced has introduced some problems, but the last two or three updates had fewer problems for me than I can count on one hand. I’ve listed all my major complaints on this thread, and it’s now upwards of 20, and occasionally I think of something to come here to mention for the benefit of others, but forget by the time I’m in front of a PC again (and no, I don’t trust posting here on my phone, which reminds me…)

Complaint #21: If you use the app draw to flip back and forth between applications, and one of them is Chrome, when you flip back to Chrome, the webpage will refresh automatically and put you back at the top of the web page. So if you started typing something out, then flip to something else, then come back, all your typing is lost (unless you learned your lesson and copied it all before leaving Chrome). On an iPhone or Windows Phone, when you flip back to the web browser, it works just like a PC – you’re right back where you were as if you never left. Again, this isn’t something that “just happened” along with the OS update, this is a case of an Android developer ACTIVELY PROGRAMMING dysfunctional behavior which contradicts other browsers and previous functionality under the guise that this is somehow better than before (as if people really sat around thinking to themselves “You know, when I temporarily leave Chrome, and then come back to it, I want the page to refresh and I want to lose my place on the page and any work I was doing there.”).

And YES – they are trying to look and feel more like iPhone. The irony is that iPhone is trying to look and feel more like Android. Hopefully the pendulum swings back. A year ago, the G2 was the best phone for the money, and now it is a worthless piece of junk.

Also, do any of you remember when Android OS was open source???? Those were the days…

Well since the update I can’t download anything on my phone anyone from the app store or anything it just says it’s like pending the download for like 3 hours now help

  5. David

    04/19/2015 at 7:50 am

@ Taylor I have the ATT update nightmare also. After the upgrade none of my apps would load and would not update. After a few rounds with ATT Customer service I had to take my phone in to a local center and have them reset it because my sync to contacts was screwed up also. I has bee a real nightmare after this update and if you have problems with Google Services, or Google store you can uninstall latest updates then the apps work fine.

    04/20/2015 at 5:43 pm

ATT just lost a happy customer, well I was a happy one until the forced a Lollipop down my throat. I had no issues with my G2 running Kitkat.. as a matter of fact I had tweaked it to where it was a joy to use…. Not any more.. Gonna try reinstalling Kitkat on the phone and hope it doesn’t end up a brick. If it does, I’ll just bite the bullet rush over to Verizon and sign up with them… No android this time.. gonna look on the internet for a nice refurbished iPhone 4. One other thing… will never purchase any LG products… They too have lost my business.. A suggestion to all those cell phone manufacturers… Put in an option that gives the owner of their phone a choice as to upgrade or not. Don’t assume they want it… We all know what happens when we ASS U ME…:)

Are you sure the automatic update to Lollipop without your permission has anything to do with LG or Google? That may be an AT&T issue. Lollipop automatically downloaded to my Sprint LG G2, but its quietly waiting for me to install it. But, I may stay on Kit Kat anyway–unless Android 5.1.1 is released for the G2.

I hate the Lollipop on-screen buttons anyway. I’ll put up with them to get new features and enhancements, if I can get a relatively bug free update.

I loved my G2 before the stupid upgrade. I loved how much I could customize it. But now, the message screen is yellow, which is one of my least favorite colors. The keyboard glitches. It will “autocorrect” words from correct words, like food is always changed to good, am is always changed to an and so on. Also, most times it won’t even correct a misspelled word. The keyboard disappears randomly, I miss my like green keyboard I had before with the nature setting. Also when I go to Google something, the keyboard takes forever to pop up. I’ve tried different keyboard apps but they don’t work right. All in all I absolutely despise this stupid and pointless update! I’ve tried everything from restarting to factory reset. I just want to get rid of this!

    • Jana

      04/27/2015 at 6:57 pm

Oh man the yellow!! Why on earth are we not allowed to rid ourselves of the dehydrated dog urine color in the messaging app?

    • davidj1973

      06/17/2015 at 11:39 am

Oh dude, the spell checker in Android was so great before Lollipop, and now they’ve switched to this idiotic “guess what word you’ll use next” thing and often it changes a correctly spelled word I wanted for something that doesn’t make any sense. I know I wanted to say “food” and not “good,” so why they switched words when I spelled it correctly is beyond me.

Google – stick to spelling where you belong. Don’t try to be all cute and helpful by guessing the next word I want. It’s bad enough I have to take a half hour with every upgrade to update my personal dictionary with all the expletives I frequently use.

After Lollipop 5.0.2 update, my wifi will not turn on, the phone will not even show a MAC address. I did a factory reset (erasing all data and settings) after the update and it started to work. I can re-create this issue every time (I have proven this on MY g2 D801 seven times now.) I am going to update and see what happens over a few days this time.

I have a LG G2 and had video files on my phone such as WMV and they played fine before the 5.0.2 update. Once I updated videos will not play and it states “video format not supported”. Is there a fix or way to correct this?

    04/26/2015 at 7:02 pm

I hate this update. Hardly custmizable any more and how is it a UPDATE if they take features like the widgets off the lock screen or the volume and the adjustable brightness slide buttons away. I thought the whole point of a update was to ADD features and not take them away

  12. Rachel

    04/27/2015 at 10:49 am

So as long as I have the sync buttons clicked, once I do factory reset, I will get my contacts back? I’m nervous about doing this! But my apps will not update, nor will the google play store.

    • jcjanetcoker

      07/23/2015 at 5:55 pm

Rachel, if your contacts are backed up to Google, they will be in your Google account and once you log back in with Google they will be there. If Playstore doesn’t work, go to your settings and then apps and find the Playstore app and clear the cache. I’ll bet we are going to have to wait until the updates are fixed because I have reset my phone twice and it worked until an update came through this morning.

this is hands down the worst update ever. they want to charge me to fix their problem. Sorry verizon, you officially suck and im switching providers. everything freezes, nothing runs right, text dont send or delete. i hope this company chokes on a dick.

I had my phone set up just how I liked it and was running swiftly and efficiently. Then came Kitkat 4.4 and troubles began. I was hoping 5.0 would restore my phone’s functionality, but numerous settings tweaks and 2 very much dreaded factory resets I am left with the following list of problems:

    – screen goes black (with the status bar showing) and becomes unresponsive at random (must power off to reset)
    – screen keeps turning off when trying to “wake” phone from idle (must power down to reset)
    – screen’s tactile sensitivity is inconsistent, can’t select text or click hyperink in browser or email at random
    – keyboard doesn’t always show up when text input is expected
    – keyboard response is poor, pressing on 1 letter but another one is typed.
    – keyboard does not allow for backspace key to erase text.
    – keyboard didn’t work with all text input fields, unable to input login or password
    – autocorrect “fixes” correctly spelled words as it pleases: for example “Katie” –> “Marie”
    – phone drops calls
    – calls are dropped, people can’t hear me or say my speech is garbled
    – wireless network signal strength goes from 5 bars and 4g to zero bars and 1x and then disappears completely all in the same spot
    – phone is super slow and sluggish
    – battery drains very quickly.

I have spent hours on the phone with Verizon with no result. Each person blames Google, LG, 3rd party apps, me, aliens, etc. and no one wants to take responsibility.

I really hope that 5.1.1 is released soon because I am so frustrated with this phone. It has become virtually unusable.

I hate the new update! My buttons are now gray, the original weather app widget is gone and in its place is an ugly line drawing version. Bring back the pretty yellow suns. The colors in the apps are ugly and I can’t change them. I used to love my G2, but now it’s just an ugly, gray mess. Why would they take away the memo and replace it with memo+, which is really a —–?

I received a message that google play services needs to be updated, When I tried to update the update just keeps running and will never update, now I cannot even get the update to stop, have to turn off data or it drains my battery as well as using all my data. Please help! Verizon has not been able to help solve this problem.

I got my g2 a month after its release in oct-2013.
It came obviously with jelly bean, but in april of 2014, i upgraded to kit kat… With the kit kat upgrade everything went smoothly and actually the phone performed better. Im a heavy user and the g2 battery life and charging time gets nothing but praise from me… Until the lollipop 5.0.2. Upgrade.
I didn’t want to wait for the ota version to arrive so i downloaded the lg mobile support tool and pulled it off t mobiles upgrade site…
I personally love the lollipop upgrade now but i was so frustrated with the charging time i was going to throw this phone in the ohio river… I was so use to the fast charging time before the lollipop update that this was enough for me to almost switch phones. I was pissed…
I read some wanna be tech guys remedies about factory resets, cleaning caches, and a bunch of other crap but you know what remedies the slow charging time after the lollipop update???
Using the original charger and cable provided by Lg. When i got my g2, i left these in the box and immediately was using car chargers, and a 50 dollar Belkin wall setup thats suppose to be 2.0 amps and rapid charging… They all charged the phone fast before lollipop, but now the only thing that charges it fast are the charger and cable provided which is a 5 volt- 1.8 amp, and a genuine Lg usb data cable. Now its like lightning again, and i can enjoy the lollipop update. Hope this helps. May the force b with you. Or near you. Or something.

Ok. So is anybody else having trouble with the vibrate on the phone LG2 after this last update?

    • davidj1973

      06/17/2015 at 11:47 am

Major vibrate problems for me, Carmen. Here’s a few (there are others):

      1. When I put the phone in “do not disturb no matter what” mode, it still vibrates LOUDLY when it reaches full charge. At the office, I don’t care so much, but in the middle of the night? No. Why they thought it was a good idea to allow me to block vibrations from emails, texts, and phone calls, but let the “battery charge full” notification still buzz through is ludicrous.

      2. Vibrations for emails and texts are now locked together. In Kit Kat, I could set emails to notification light only (no sound), and set texts to vibration only (no sound). That’s how I want it. I receive dozens of emails per day, more than I wish I did, but texts are usually for more immediate concerns, so I want to be notified of those right away. However, in Lollipop, some idiot developer thought it would be a great idea to put all notifications on the same vibration/sound setting no matter what. I invite ANYBODY who reads this to explain to me how removing customization for something like this is somehow BETTER.

      3. If the ringer is set to vibrate, and I’m listening to music at the same time I receive a text or email, the music doesn’t pause, and the phone doesn’t vibrate. How does that even make sense? Well, it’s Lollipop, it’s not designed to make sense, so maybe I should stop asking.

Not only did I have a problem with how poorly Lg made the G2 one crack and the whole damn screen is done. I can’t begin to type all the things I don’t like about this f*c@ed up update why were apps removed from my device why is the keyboard freezing up and most importantly I need my option back to ROTATE MY HOMESCREEN. Who told Google they could remove things without my permission put a lil disclaimer stating by accepting this update you are also giving permission for s*it to be removed from your device… How about I didn’t even accept the update. How can I get my kitkat back? I definitely want all my looks, apps, and everything else back

I have the Sprint LG G2. At least I use to. Since this Lollipop it is not the phone I paid for. Most of my G2 features are gone. (Slide aside, home screen button app options, headphones plug in app options, etc) The keyboards are HORRID, the colors scheme is terrible, I can go on and on. Sprint will be giving me a new G2 with KitKat still on it.

Yes, I deal for it — my g2 has lost much of its good after I made it to lollipop version. But, You didn’t lose your home screen button app option, just change it into swipe mode, you will find that option. Hope theres a better future for our g2.

I have the LG G2 for T- Mobile. Personally I had a ton of problems with kitkat. My mobile data and cell service didn’t work, I couldn’t hear people very well at all during calls and my phone constantly rebooted several times a day for no reason. My battery life was already bad and only lasted me until 5:00 on a school day. The lollipop update was my only hope or I gonna give up on this phone. Honestly I liked the format of the update. Sometimes its cool to change it up once in a while. The update solved my rebooting problem but mobile data stayed the same. As for the battery it can last you about the same if you turn your screens brightness down all the way and turn your mobile data and location services off when youre not using your phone. These get me better battery than when I had kitkat and also solve the overheating problem. I didn’t have any problems with the playstore not updating apps maybe because I had set mine on manually update before the lollipop update. Also not having Wi-Fi connection problems. The keyboard problems can be fixed if you turn off auto correct and text suggestions to stop the backspace problem. Just use swipe to text fast which automatically corrects the words you type. Also turn off press spacebar twice two make period feature in settings to make errors less common. Another main problem I have is it is constantly saying currently can’t download please try again later and can’t figure out how to disable. Can somebody also tell me if battery savers, optimizers, task killers and tool boxes actually work? I have been trying to figure out if they extend or decrease your battery. And if possible can somebody tell me how to fix my mobile data because Im not getting service when my mom is on her galaxy note 3 and we both have T-Mobile. Also charging your phone goes faster when you turn your phone off. I have found that my phone lags the hotter it gets.

This is the single worst Android update in its long history. I’m normally not a conspiracy theorist, but this update is changing that. For starters why on earth would anyone design a new OS with the objective of hurting battery life? Maybe… to entice me to buy a new phone???? Naaah… Tbeyre honest people, aren’t they???

    List of things I HATE:

    1) Aesthetics. Lollipop looks like something off of a Pokemon cartoon. I’m 42 years old, and it makes me feel embarrassed to use the phone. Quick, hide your phone so people don’t think you’re playing games!
    2) Battery life in the toilet. On v4, I would charge every other day. Now I can’t go 8 hours without charging. Yes, I kill apps left and right, and I disable the useless ones I will never use, like NFL or whatever.
3). Keyboard. Stop trying to predict the next word, Google. I know what I want to say. Just stick to spelling where you belong.
4). Notification drawer. I vehemently hate it now. Everything is all smashed together and has a squishy movement pattern to it. I liked it better when everything was locked in place.
    5) QSlide doesn’t work for Messaging app. It appears and then disappears immediately.
6). Navigation used to be accurate within 15 feet. Now I’m lucky it knows what state I’m in.
7). Home screen swipe up. It used to go to QuickMemo and take a screen shot. I loved it. It also has a shortcut to the camera or other apps, and was FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE. Now the ONLY option for swipe up is Google Now, which is Google’s sorry excuse for imitating Apple’s Siri app.
8). Gallery. Some developer out there thought it would be a GREAT IDEA to REMOVE the ability to make directories within the Gallery. So now all my pics are a humbled mess.
9). You know how people are totally in love with the Windows 8 start screen? Your answer should be “No.,” because they’re not. In fact, the first thing MS is doing with Windows 10 is going back to their trademark start screen. However, Android developers apparently like the Windows 8 start screen, which is apparent all over Lollipop. Want to see things in a list? Too bad, you have to look at a mess of pictures that cometely fill the whole screen.
10). The home buttons. Um, what does a square shape do? Oh! That’s the app drawer. I don’t see the connection. What about a circle button? Also not intuitive. And a triangle on its side is now the “back” button. Thanks for the elementary geometry lesson, Google. I liked it better when your button symbols actually told me something.
11). Hitting the back button makes me cringe. It used to go one step back every time. Now it goes one, or two, or closes the app entirely. Yeah, that’s the functionality I want in a phone! Keeps me on my toes.
12). Before I could set texts to vibrate and emails to notification light. Now they all run together. I don’t want to get that vibration with emails. I receive dozens each day. Texts are more urgent, but somebody somewhere thought this would make life better.
13). Interruptions. Oh boy… So, now notifications are an interruption? Fancy that. I liked it better when I could manage my notification timelines via the Sound settings.
14). Even with all notifications silenced, the phone will buzz LOUDLY at night when it reaches a full charge. Wait, I told the phone to block all interrruptions though. So I guess the developers decided it’s probably best to notify me in the middle of the night that,my phone is fully charged but that it’s still okay to block all calls from my annoying family member group text messaging habits. Makes perfect sense!

The list goes on and on.

DaveJ, Google should hire you as an Android tester or user experience consultant. Your detailed and comprehensive observations would be helpful (assuming decision makers are listening). I agree with most of your complaints too. However, there’s a weakness in your conspiracy theory: Even some users of the Galaxy S6 and other brand new flagships are reporting severe battery life, stability and lag issues on Lollipop!

I posted a Lollipop survey in the Google+ LG G2 Owners community. Surprisingly, about 79% are happy or mostly happy with Lollipop, compared to a much smaller percentage who are ambivalent or wishing they had remained on KitKat. This community is probably not representative of the general population, but it’s an interesting contrast to the more than 90% who are complaining here on gottabemobile.com.

I also have an LG G2. Before Lollipop was finally released on Sprint and other major U.S. carriers, I decided to wait and see how others made out. Based on complaints all over the Internet and a few changes I don’t like, I decided to stay on KitKat. If LG and Sprint are savvy enough to test and release at least Android 5.1 for the G2 and the complaints drop significantly, I may finally upgrade.

Why did they take quiet mode away? Now, if i want it to be silent throughout the night, I can’t hear my alarm in the morning? There’s got to be a way to uninstall this crap update!

    • David J (@David_J1973)

      05/25/2015 at 10:07 am

You can still hear your alarm, but like it is said above, your phone will still sound and/or buzz once the battery reaches full power. Sort of a dumb oversight. Most importantly though, the “Interruptions” setup and functionality is less intuitive than the Quiet Mode was. It’s also not accessed through the Sound menu anymore, but by messing with your volume keys or using the pull-down menu. It’s awful.

Get this: I called Verizon and offered them $300 to send me a LG G2 with Kit Kat on it. They said no. So I said $500. Still said no. Then I upped it to $1,000 and the woman paused for a moment, then said no. So then I said I’m headed to republicwireless as soon as my contract is up. She tried offering me more service and I said I don’t care, and then said “Google took a great phone like mine and flushed it down the toilet with an awful upgrade. I’m out!!”

      • As

        06/14/2015 at 5:23 pm

I almost got it to work but the dropped calls, poor sound quality when making a call and random signal drops paired with insanely bad battery life have done it for me. I bought a used pure Google Android phone and would much rather put up with updates directly from Google than from the incompetent tinkerers at Verizon. I really loved my LG G2 but Verizon’s Lollipop update killed it, just as it killed its predrcessor – Droid Incredible 2. I am giving stock Google a chance as the last resort before I make the switch to Apple.

        • daradv

          06/23/2015 at 11:00 am

Funny. I had the Droid Incredible 2 before my LG G2 as well. Verizon killed both. Ridiculous. I used to charge my G2 every other day or more and now I have to charge it every 8 hours even if I’m not using it. It’ll drain 50% throughout the night even. Verizon gave me a new SIM card to help with people I’m calling inability to hear me and the dropped calls but it only helped marginally. I loved the G2 when I got it and then on April 2 when I updated to the much anticipated Lollipop, it was a completely different poorly designed phone. Can’t wait for something new to come out that’s hopefully designed better.

I’ve never had a phone that I actually hated…until now. Verizon didn’t “force” me to install this update however when the box requesting me to update my phone popped up every 15 minutes, I eventually hit YES. Since that day…my phone has had nothing but problems. Slowest phone I’ve ever seen! Apps crashing daily and several times a day. Takes forever to pull anything up, change between screens, use Google, even to simply dial out. My battery went from being able to go a good 12 hours without a charge to overnight…poof…it can’t hang in longer than 3 hours. The phone is constantly heating up, even when not in use. I can take three pictures and my battery is at 0%.
At this point, I’m not even sure why I’m paying for a phone. I think someone owes me a new one instead of saying…oh well, you’ll just have to wait for new updates. More updates???? This last one did enough damage! You guys couldn’t leave alone something that was working just fine, could you? I’ve had this phone less than a year and I was so very happy with it. And now I’m ready to smash it, cancel my service and go back to board games and letter writing.

    • davidj1973

      06/02/2015 at 11:59 am

Evangeline, that’s why I said ‘conspiracy theory’ up above – I think Lollipop was nothing more than a test of market elasticity for Android. The theory goes that if they push a horrible Android update, people WON’T leave – instead they’ll start upgrading their phones to the latest and greatest to mitigate the slowness, poor battery life, and weakened connectivity issues. Remember when Microsoft tried this with Vista? Vista was a decent OS, but they KNEW that most people’s hardware couldn’t handle it, and therefore would be forced to buy new hardware, so MS would be the cause of a huge infusion of cash into the PC hardware market (remember, software and hardware are mutually dependent). Same thing here.

Other things I hate – have you noticed when you minimize Chrome, go to something else, and then come back to Chrome, the website refreshes completely? It used to just go back to where I left off without fully refreshing. I wonder why they did this – possibly to drive up people’s data usage??? I wouldn’t put it past them.

Hitting the ‘back’ button, oops i mean the triangle button, now makes me cringe every time I’m about to do it. The result is so unpredictable. And it doesn’t matter what app you’re in – the problem is universal. Sometimes it goes 1 step back, sometimes 3, sometimes 2. It’s a total mess.

Most people’s complaints are centered on the aesthetics, and while I agree, there are 3rd party “launcher apps” that can change this, so for me, that’s not the issue. The issue is performance.

My LG G2 was super awesome before Lollipop. The update didn’t just make it ‘okay,’ it made my user experience TERRIBLE. I actually enjoyed opportunities to use my phone when I was running KitKat. Now I just get angry.

  42. Rolynda Constein

    06/06/2015 at 7:39 am

I had no complaints before the update. The LG G2 worked fantastic. Now it it soooooooooooooo slow. Apps are jerky and lock up. The screen goes black. I am constantly rebooting to see if that helps. No. I never had problems with bumping the buttons on the phone when talking and wither making all the beep sounds or disconnecting. The screen turned off. Now, maybe maybe not. Stopped being able to print to my computers.

I am sure this is how the mobile phone industry makes sure people go out and buy new phones.

    • davidj1973

      06/06/2015 at 8:09 am

Rolynda, I’m confident that this update was premeditated to be sloppy and horrible so they could test consumer demand elasticity. I think the belief is that “Droid users will remain faithful,” and they had the hubris to attempt to test it in this back-handed way. Otherwise, there really is no real reason for the humongous drop in quality with this update. Moreover, if this update was simply to make security updates, why not just make security updates to Kit Kat, and leave it intact? You don’t see Ubuntu trying to change the look and feel of their OS when they make updates, and they make two per year. Same thing with Apple’s OS. Seems to me that only Android and Windows try to recreate the user experience from the bottom up with each update they make, and guess what, they’re the two that royally suck at doing it. Grandpop used to say quite emphatically: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” That’s my mantra with Android updates as well.

My contract with VZ is up in November, and I will be leaving Android for good. I’m tired of these moronic updates that ruin the experience. The LG G2 **WAS** a great phone. Now it’s a worthless piece of garbage.

This article written by Cory Gunther is just as freak’n useless as this latest upgrade. After reading about the problems repeated several times there still isn’t a way given to fix this assault on our lives.

I cannot find wireless connect and my USB tethering is disabled.

One can say a lot about Apple and iPhone, but being insensitive to their customers isn’t one of them.

Has anyone else among all the other crap with this up grade had an issue with trying to search for a contact to call under the contact screen? I select contacts and try to tap on the search bar to enter a name…. nothing. I can’t even get an input bar. I have managed to call the cops about 7 times now. I have Sprint and just like everyone else. I hate this update. Whoever created, tested and approved this are idiots. It took the consumer all but 5 mins after the upgrade to hate it.

    • Dino

      06/14/2015 at 7:30 am

My contacts search bar works totally fine, and same with my voice/input bar. The thing that annoys me is that I can’t see my toggle brightness and volume from my drop screen. I have to go all the way to setting to manage the brightness, it gets very annoying. Not even the auto brightness or dims toggle helps. Either too dark or too bright.

      • Heidi

        06/14/2015 at 1:16 pm

I have no issue with the brightness bar. But I feel ur pain on the adjustments being made in the settings menu. I am not able to adjust the volume on my notifications thru the drop down. But I can thru settings. I also have issues on snapchat when trying to change font color. I can pick like red or the color at the bottom. But not pinks. I seem to have problems in the line vicinity. But when on my home screen I can select games or widgets in that area. So it’s not a screen issue. Idk I’m ready for a phone change.

I’m having all of these problems and then some. My biggest gripe right now is that my camera app freezes and crashed constantly. Normally this would be a huge problem, but now it’s an especially horrendous problem as I just had my first child 2 months ago and love to capture film and video of him. I filmed an over 12-minute video this morning and when I “stopped” it to save, the camera function froze. I checked gallery and no f*cking video. That was 12 minutes of precious time in my son’s life that I was looking forward to watching in the future (when I’m feeling nostalgic) and which is now gone. I mean, why?? And why are only some people having these issues with the update? It doesn’t make sense to me. I’m devastated by this torturously slow device now, and I’ve barely had my phone for a year.

I hate the update. My apps and widgets where moved, some apps where deleted. My notes where all deleted and I’m missing contacts. To make matters worse my phone is much slower now than before and my battery gets used up very quickly because apps decided that they need to be operating in the back ground no matter how ocften I turn them off. Not to mention how annoying and childish my phone looks now.

Since I updated to Android 5.0.2 (Lollipop), my G2 keeps on restarting several times per day. Anyone else have the same issue?

    • davidj1973

      06/15/2015 at 8:25 am

That happens to me about once per day. More problems (in addition to the 13+ more I mention above):

      * If I scroll down (but not up) a webpage quickly in Chrome, it will kill the audio (???), including any open music apps, including the stock music player, as well as Spotify or Bandcamp. These things seem unrelated, but it’s true.

      * Like others have noticed, I can’t search my contacts like I used to.

      * The developer who removed the digital clock from the notification bar at the top while the screen is ON and the phone is in locked mode should be dragged out behind the barn and promptly beaten with reeds.

      * Every single time I plug in the headphone jack, a warning comes up saying listening to music loudly can damage my hearing. Fine, I understand that Google doesn’t want people who troll companies with deep pockets to take them to court, but the volume setting when I plug in the headphones is at 10%. I understand the pop-up if I were to crank my volume up to 100%, but is it really necessary if my volume settings are only at 10%?

      * Calendar vibration is sporadic at best. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. And yes, I checked to make sure notifications are on and all that.

      * LG’s sound driver was pretty good, but after Lollipop, the music sounds flat, tinny, and muted. Yes, I tried all the equalizer settings, even the pre-set ones.

      * The widget for clearing RAM runs at a SNAIL’S PACE compared to how it ran in Kit Kat. It’s almost painful to try to clear the RAM, which is paradoxical – killing the unused RAM requires more RAM now. DUH!!!

      * After two months, I’m still extremely annoyed that I cannot silence emails but leave texts on vibrate. What developer out there thought it would be a GOOD IDEA to actually create MORE WORK for himself and go OUT OF HIS WAY to actually PROGRAM THIS FUNCTION INTO THE PHONE??????? I would have **LOVED** to be a fly on the wall when this idea was concocted. The (lack of) thought process on this is head-spinning.

      * QSlide is almost virtually moot at this point. I think a developer actively targeted QSlide on the LG phone, especially the messaging QSlide app, which is ironic since that is the most useful QSlide function.

      * Camera – don’t even get me started. I bought a G2 because (for the money) it had the most powerful camera available. Before, the camera would remember which mode I used last, and just go back to it (I almost invariably take every picture with HDR – if you haven’t tried it yet, do so. It is tremendous). Now it goes back to “Normal” between uses. How helpful is that??? Not very.

      * Numerous apps are not yet fully functional in Lollipop. I don’t blame the app developers – and I say so on Google Play reviews – but apparently app developers are having a tough time adapting their apps to Lollipop’s quirky backwards ways as well. I leave my app reviews at their original ratings, but make a note that I do not blame them for the app’s quirkiness post-Lollipop.

Android better get this update behind them QUICKLY. I can’t imagine people see/hear/read about Lollipop and come running to Android – they are bleeding customers by the day thanks to this horrible, awful update.

I downgraded back to KitKat (actually, in my mind, KitKat is an upgrade to Lollipop! Ha!), but Verizon kept pushing the update to me, I kept refusing it, and then one night I woke up when my phone screen went on, lighting up the whole room and vibrating loudly as it entered the splash screen. So they eventually forced it on me. I never figured out how to root Lollipop or KitKat (I rooted Gingerbread and JellyBean just fine on my Samsung though) successfully, or I would do that and force them not to bother me ever.

I’m hoping the Ubuntu Phone starts to really take off.

I cant do anything on my phone since the update. LG G2 has a mind of its own starting and clicking all across the screen no matter if their is a case or not. When their is a case the phone becomes a giant clicking machine. Why send out an update when it going to screw everything up instead of testing it like you should!

My LG won’t come on past the LG Logo since the upgrades. It has come on for several days until an Android Update and then it won’t go past the LG Logo. Phone has not come completely on for 5 days now. I’ve reset it 3 times, but now I can’t even do that.

My LG G2 since upgrade has been freezing (randomly) and turning off by itself. It would take a while to turn on also. In addition it drains the battery really quickly before the update. It is frustrating and annoying at the same time. I hope they fix this problem

Okay first when i set my phone to silent it tells me “no interruptions not even for alarms, set alarm to priority”. I go to settings and there is NOTHING there to set it to apparently its already priority. Also I really dont like the new look of the phone. It freezes now for everything when it use to only be for the internet. The battery life is very low now. Basically I hate the upgrade. Theres so many things that I hate about it and what is it for anyway? I swear they do this shit on purpose. Everything I’ve ever upgraded always ends up being worse than before and now I’m regretting upgrading at all.

I am based internationally (not in the US) and just got my update through the LG desktop software connection 2 days ago without knowing I was updating from Kitkat to Lollipop. Thought it was just a version update on Kitkat at first. I was pleasantly surprised when the update completed, but the problems didn’t take long to show up. I’ve experienced battery drain, excessive overheating, freezing and crashing already. I will be looking at resetting back to factory if I can’t restore to previous versions from backups. Kitkat worked well, and I’m sure Lollipop will be awesome, but not as it is right now (5.0.2). I’ll keep an eye on it for another few days before turning restoring just in case the issues weed out themselves. I’ve done several manual and hard restarts, with each one seeming to improve the unit’s response slightly (weird but true).

Intrigued to see what the end result is, but I really thought my G2 battery was going to blow up when it got too hot.

This is likely the ugliest thing Google has ever produced. If I wanted a crappy, kiddish-looking iphone I would have bought one. Please give us back a nice interface THAT WORKS FOR US!! I chose Android precisely because it was everything apple was not. Hey @GOOGLE!, you can’t have your cake and eat it too!! Start marketing to the icrowd and your faithful fans will LEAVE you! There are more (hungry) fish in the sea! History proves this.

I don’t know what’s going on, but I can’t open several apps on my phone (Google play store, YouTube, spades and world star apps). I’ve tried even turning on my data while at home just to get the apps to open, but no luck. Sometimes I can’t even go into my app drawer. Instead I get a few dots going in circles, then the phone freezes up. This all started earlier today on my way to work. I pretty pissed now!

With this last update my phone has been rendered useless. I’ve had two great years with my LG G2 and now all it does is constantly reboot, sometimes for over half an hour. Once it finally boots it will freeze and start rebooting. Ugh, I have gone back to my old iphone 4S which after 5 years, still works. I will probably g back to the iphone scene as my wife has always had iphone’s and never ever had an issue like this.

For me the issue is battery drain and heating device .. The bugs were fixed with a bit of googling …
Like issues with play store download freeze..
Go to apps delete data of play store then , go to play services and clear cache then restart..
