How to Pair the Apple Watch with the iPhone

Learn how to pair your Apple Watch with any iPhone 5 or newer. The process takes about 10 to 15 minutes depending how many Apple Watch apps you need to sync to your new Apple Watch. You can also use this guide if you’re going to pair your Apple Watch to a new iPhone or restore your Apple Watch from the backup.

In order to start, you’ll need to be on iOS 8.2 or newer, Right now this is iOS 8.3, but eventually this will work with iOS 9 in other versions of IOS.

The Apple Watch comes charged at about 70 to 80%, so you don’t need to place it on the charger before you do this. You may want to charge it up completely before you go to use it though.

How to Pair Apple Watch to iPhone

On your iPhone go to Settings and then tap on General and then on About. Halfway down the screen and you should see version and a number on the right side. This needs to say iOS 8.2 or greater for this to work. If you don’t see that tap on General in the upper left-hand corner and then tap on Software Update to upgrade your iPhone so that you can use the Apple Watch.

Now that your iPhone is ready, you need to get your Apple Watch ready. Press the side button below the Digital Crown to turn the Apple Watch on. Choose your language and then tap Start Pairing. If you cannot use the automatic method, this is where you would tap on the I in the upper right to manually pair the Apple Watch, but most users can stick with using the iPhone camera.

Find the Apple Watch app on your iPhone you tap on it. On the main screen you’ll see an option to Start Pairing. Tap on this to get started.

Once the iPhone recognizes the Apple Watch you will see the animation and the image above. Choose to Set up as a new Apple Watch or Restore from a backup. Now choose which wrist to wear your Apple Watch on. Then, agree to the terms and conditions.

Next up you need to enter your Apple ID password, and if needed use two-step authentication. The next step is to say OK to Location Services, Siri and choose to send diagnostic information if you wish.

You’re almost done. Now you need to enter an Apple Watch passcode, Tap this out on your Apple Watch twice and then you can choose if your iPhone should unlock your Apple Watch.

Finally, choose if you want to sync all of your current Apple Watch apps or to do it later. Even if this is your first iPhone, there will be a lot of iPhone apps with Watch apps waiting to install. You can uninstall later or choose to install specific apps later. It is completely up to you.

The Apple Watch Sync process will take about 10 to 15 minutes. After this is done you’ll hear a small ping on the Apple Watch and you can start using the Watch and the Apple Watch app to customize your experience. In the Apple Watch app on the iPhone you can set up Apple Pay, control notifications and other features.
