Moto X Android 5.1 Lollipop Update Details Emerge

Published

on

Back in March Google announced the Android 5.1 Lollipop update aimed at fixing a slew of bugs and small problems plaguing the initial Lollipop release. That month many key Nexus smartphones and tablets received updates, and now today we’ve learned some key details about the Moto X Android 5.1 Lollipop update.

Android L was first announced as Android 4.4 KitKat’s successor back in June during the company’s annual Google I/O developer event. Then in October Google officially unveiled the full Android 5.0 Lollipop update along with the Nexus 6, Nexus 9 tablet, and a new Nexus Player for the TV. Soon after Motorola made some announcements, and they were among the first to update smartphones too.

The Android 5.0 Lollipop update isn’t rolling out to smartphones as fast as Android 4.4 KitKat did, but there are a lot of visual and behind the scenes changes that are making the wait a bit longer than expected. Not to mention bugs were quickly fixed with releases of Android 5.0.1, Android 5.0.2, and then in March the huge Android 5.1 Lollipop release. And while Moto has delivered Android 5.0 to a few devices, a slew of them will jump straight from KitKat to the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop release.

Android 5.0 Lollipop was officially released on November 3rd when Google sent the code to manufacturers, and when the Nexus 9 tablet was released to the public. It only took a week for Motorola to get started, and they kicked things off by updating the Moto X 2014 Pure edition to Android 5.0 on November 10th.

Since then we’ve seen the new new Moto X and G for 2014, the Moto Maxx, Moto E and many other devices all receive updates by Motorola and Google to Android 5.0 Lollipop. One of the only remaining devices without said update, is the DROID Turbo, but that’s likely coming soon.

Late last month the original Moto X in Brazil received an update to Android 5.1 Lollipop, the first of any 2013 Moto X to see such an update, but that’s just to first of many. This afternoon Motorola updated their support pages and released a slew of details and documents regarding the highly anticipated 5.1 update for many devices.

Today Motorola announced the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for the new 2014 Moto X on AT&T and T-Mobile, although T-Mobile doesn’t carry it, so this is likely for the Pure Edition. They also confirmed Android 5.1 Lollipop for the original Moto X as well, on both carriers. There’s no sign of the DROID Turbo update, but we’ve been hearing that is coming soon for sometime, so it should be any day now.

The changelog mentions everything that we saw with Android 5.1 for the Nexus 6. Things like improved notifications, improved quick settings, do not disturb options, device protection, better performance, camera enhancements, and much much more. The link above, (and here) have all the details regarding what’s new.

For now we’re not sure if these are announcements, or just changelogs, but as you can see from the image above Motorola is stating that they’re delivering the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop for these devices. This potentially means owners of both the original Moto X and new Moto on AT&T (or unlocked) should be on the lookout for an over the air update, and we should be hearing more from carriers like AT&T too.

If the update is indeed rolling out today owners can expect the update to arrive starting today, and throughout the next 2-3 days, as these are typically slow and staggered releases. You can also head into settings > about phone > check for updates and see if it’s waiting for your device.

All said and done, no carriers have made announcements, so until that happens we’re not completely sure if the updates are actually rolling out, or if Motorola just has the webpages ready to go for when the update does commence. Drop us a comment below if you’ve seen Android 5.1 on your Moto X.
