Nexus 9 Android Lollipop Update Arrives

Over the course of the past few days we’ve finally started to see Google’s latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update hit multiple Nexus tablets, and news suggest an upgrade is coming soon for the Nexus 9. Today a Nexus 9 Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update has arrived as an over the air update, and below we have all the details.

Back in November Google released the new Nexus 9 tablet after making a formal announcement in October, and it was the first device ever released with the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop software. However, most other Nexus smartphones and tablets have seen multiple updates to fix problems, but the Nexus 9 is still stuck on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop.

This week news arrived that the Nexus 9 android 5.1.1 Lollipop update was in the final testing phases and could arrive soon, and this morning the Nexus 7 started getting the latest software. Today Google is pushing out an update to the Nexus 9, but it isn’t what anyone expected, or wanted. Here’s what we know.

It was with great excitement we saw an update ready for our own Nexus 9 this morning, but sadly it’s only Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, an update Google released back in November for almost all Nexus devices. For whatever reason the Nexus 9 has been stuck on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, while all other Nexus smartphones and tablets released over the past two years received an update to Android 5.0.2, and then Android 5.1 Lollipop in March, and now Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

The Nexus 9 is Google’s latest tablet, and many expected it to be first to receive software updates. Instead, it’s the only device that hasn’t seen an update in over five months, and many owners are quite frustrated. Below is an update that started hitting users tablets this morning, but sadly it is only Android 5.0.2 Lollipop that was released back in November.

We’re not sure if the dual-core 64-bit NVIDIA processor inside the Nexus 9 is to blame, or if there’s some underlying issues that have prevented Google from updating the device, but even the 2012 Nexus 7 is on the latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, while the Nexus 9 isn’t. The update today many expected to be the latest version of Android, but sadly that isn’t the case.

That being said, Google could be pushing out the Nexus 9 Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update to fix a few bugs and prepare the device for the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update, the main software update aimed at fixing all of the bugs, integrating new features from 5.1, and solving many of the performance problems and issues that have plagued the Nexus 9.

Those with a Nexus 9 can expect a small 23.3MB update to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop to arrive today, or in the next few days as an over the air update, and shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to complete. Hopefully after it arrives, Google released the factory images and starts pushing out the latest and highly anticipated Android 5.1.1 Lollipop upgrade for the Nexus 9. The tablet needs it, and we’ll update the moment we know more details.

Users can head into settings > about tablet > and check for updates to manually pull the latest Android 5.0.2 Lollipop for the Nexus 9, or just wait for the over the air notification to arrive in the coming days.
