Samsung Galaxy Note Edge 2: What We Know So Far

Published

on

Rumor has it, Samsung is working on two brand new Galaxy Note models including a Galaxy Note 5 and a Galaxy Note Edge 2. With Samsung Galaxy Note Edge 2 rumors starting to take shape, we take a look at what we know so far about Samsung’s rumored successor to the Galaxy Note Edge.

Last September, Samsung took the stage in Berlin, Germany and announced its all new Galaxy Note. Well, Galaxy Notes. See, instead of just one new Galaxy Note the company announced two brand new Galaxy Note models for 2014. One, a Samsung Galaxy Note 4, a direct successor to the Galaxy Note 3. The other, a Galaxy Note Edge, a curved Galaxy Note 4 variant that makes use of Samsung’s flexible display technology.

The two models launched side-by-side and were released later in the year in most major markets including the United States. They were recently joined by a Samsung Galaxy S6 and a Galaxy S6 Edge, the latter a curved variant of Galaxy S6 that boasts a display that curves down over both edges of the phone.

As the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge launch starts to settle, we’re hearing more about Samsung’s plans for the rest of 2015. Samsung Galaxy Note 5 rumors are swirling and we’re also starting to get a read on what Samsung has planned for its Galaxy Note Edge series.

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge 2 rumors are still a bit scarce but we’re to learn about potential Galaxy Note Edge 2 specs and a Galaxy Note Edge 2 launch date. With those rumors in mind, we take a look at what we know so far about the sequel to one of last year’s interesting smartphone releases.

Galaxy Note 5 & Galaxy Note Edge 2

Several weeks ago, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 rumor mill starting picking up speed as a rash of reports highlighted potential Galaxy Note 5 details.

One of the reports, from SamMobile, suggested that Samsung was hard at work on two new Galaxy smartphones. One, called Project Noble, is thought to be the Samsung Galaxy Note 5. The other is called Project Zen and it’s now believed to be a successor to the Galaxy Note Edge.

The publication claims that the device will not be part of the Galaxy Note 5 family though. It appears that the company’s new Galaxy Note Edge, a device we’re calling Galaxy Note Edge 2, will not feature the same specs as the Samsung Galaxy Note 5. It’s not clear what that means for branding or for its price tag. The Galaxy Note Edge is $100 more expensive than the $299.99 Galaxy Note 4.

It appears that the Galaxy Note Edge 2, like the Galaxy Note 5, is still early in development which means that the information that follows could change. Everything depends on the testing process behind the scenes and it could take months for Samsung to decide on a final version.

Galaxy Note Edge 2 Launch Date

Last September, Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge on stage together. In March, it debuted the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge next to one another. So might we see the same thing happen this year with the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy Note Edge 2? Perhaps.

Up until now, we’ve only seen two Galaxy Note 5 launch rumors. One suggests that we’ll see the device arrive in August. The other, from SamMobile, suggests that Samsung is once again gearing up for a launch at IFA. IFA 2015 kicks off on September 4th. Samsung’s used IFA to announced all of its previous Galaxy Note models so we expect a launch in and around the start of the trade show.

The rumors don’t mention Project Zen or the Galaxy Note Edge 2 specifically but what better place to announce a new Galaxy Note model than at an Unpacked event in the fall? Makes sense to us.

Galaxy Note Edge 2 Release

If Samsung announces the Galaxy Note Edge 2 in September alongside the Galaxy Note 5, it will probably get the device out before the end of the year. But where will it go?

The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge 2 is reportedly heading to the United States, Korea and Europe at the very least. Here’s a rundown of the Galaxy Note Edge 2 carriers.

  • Galaxy Note Edge 2 – SM-G928A NA ATT
  • Galaxy Note Edge 2 – SM-G928S KOR SKC
  • Galaxy Note Edge 2 – SM-G928F EUR XX
  • Galaxy Note Edge 2 – SM-G928V NA VZW

If AT&T and Verizon are getting the Galaxy Note Edge 2 then you can expect the other top carriers in the United States to feature Samsung’s new curved smartphone.

Galaxy Note Edge 2 Specs

So to recap: SamMobile claims that there will only be one version of the Galaxy Note 5. Samsung’s other big project, “Project Zen,” will reportedly be a spiritual successor to the Galaxy Note Edge and won’t carry the Galaxy Note 5’s name.

The Galaxy Note Edge 2 will supposedly feature a dual-edge display but it won’t come with the same high-end specs as the Galaxy Note 5. Specs are said to include a 5.4-inch to 5.5-inch dual-edge curved display, a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor from Qualcomm, 16GB of internal storage, a 16MP rear camera with OIS, and an 8MP front-facing camera.

Galaxy S6 Avengers Age of Ultron - 1

We’ve seen a number of rumors hint at a dual-edged display for the next Galaxy Note Edge. The Korea Herald suggests that Samsung is at least considering the Galaxy S6 Edge’s dual-edge display technology for the Galaxy Note series. The report cites Roh Tae-moon, executive vice president of Samsung’s product strategy team who notes that “there is a possibility that Samsung will introduce the curved display for the Galaxy Note lineup.”

report from China suggests that Samsung will be using a flexible display for the Galaxy Note . In addition to that, an old report from Korean publication Ledwn, which accurately predicted the Galaxy S6 Edge, claims that Samsung will be putting a flexible display on the Galaxy Note. So, it’s pretty clear that Samsung is probably going to continue using the technology on this year’s Galaxy Note. It just may not use it for the Galaxy Note 5.

Galaxy Note Edge 2 Software

Android 5.1 is currently in development and it’s going to be heading to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. There’s a very good chance that it will be the software that debuts on the Galaxy Note Edge 2 unless Google pushes an Android 5.1.2 or Android 5.2 in the future.

Samsung is reportedly working on new camera features in its upcoming Android 5.1.1 update. The features are unclear though rumors suggest they might have something to do with Google’s camera API. If Google adds the full API, we could see some changes to the camera including RAW and better control over the shutter speed.

Android-M

Google is expected to show off its Android M update at Google I/O in late May though there’s no guarantee that it will release it any time soon. Last year, Google showed off Android L in June and released it as Android 5.0 Lollipop in November after a developer preview.

It’ll be some version of Android Lollipop or Android M. Prospective buyers can count on that.

No, it informed us about what certain sources think will be the features of the edge. Yet their comments could be speculation. What more can we expect?

Yet earlier tonight I was told at an AT&T store that Samsung Reps 2 months ago indicated that the Edge was a dead duck. No more Edges.
I almost cried. I use the Edge as well as the note-writing capacities.
In the event that the Edge has been decapitated, we friends of the Edge should start an email writng campaign.
