Disney Infinity 3.0 Speedway Toy Box Revealed

Disney Infinity 3.0 and its figures from the Star Wars universe aren’t due out for months, but we’re learning a lot more about the game’s other new features. The new Speedway Toy Box Toy Box add-on for Disney Infinity 3.0 will allow users to race each other in experience that’s similar to what Nintendo offers with Mario Kart. 

A new profile from GameInformer details what video game developer Avalanche and its partners have in store for the Speedway Toy Box Toy Box mode, a new add-on that’ll be available to users when Disney Infinity 3.0 launches later this year.

Speedway Toy Box will be almost completely unlike any driving users have done in previous versions of Disney Infinity. That’s because older driving experiences were constrained by the tools the developer used. Classic Toy Box experiences were designed using the tools available to users at home, making any driving feel a bit like an afterthought. Speedway Toy Box focuses solely on an arcade racing game experience.

Disney Infinity 3.0 characters populate the Speedway Toy Box add-on’s roster of racers. Each of these characters has their own car tailored to their universe and personality. Users can mix and match the characters that they add in the Disney Infinity 3.0 universe with different themed carts and special power ups. Like Mario Kart and some other arcade racers, being a great driver in Speedway Toy Box for Disney Infinity 3.0 doesn’t necessarily mean winning each round. Weapons are big in the game and falling prey to the wrong one could leave players behind with nothing to show for their smooth driving skills.

In screenshots for the Speedway Toy Box add-on we even see podracers from the Star Wars universe. Other vehicles include a tea cup inspired by a ride at Disney World Resort and the Incredicar, which was inspired by Disney’s The Incredibles. The basics seem to be present for Speedway Toy Box in Disney Infinity 3.0. It’s important for arcade racing games to make it very easy for friends and family to play with each other. Two people on the same console can play alongside each other by simply splitting the screen in half. It sounds basic, but split-screen gameplay is something of a rarity outside of racing games. It makes sense that all the basics of an arcade racing game would be present in Speedway Toy Box. Video game developer Sumo Digital headed-up development on the Disney Infinity 3.0 add-on. Past games the studio developed include Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed and Microsoft’s Forza Horizon 2 for the Xbox 360.

Generally, Speedway Toy Box is considered an add-on for Disney Infinity 3.0, meaning gamers will need a copy of Disney Infinity 3.0 to play. Playing Speedway Toy Box will require the Disney Infinity 3.0 Starter Pack, for example. That being said, Disney is sort of muddying the waters a bit. Speedway Toy Box will be sold as a stand-alone game that users have to purchase separately. The Speedway Toy Box release date is planned for sometime after the main game arrives on store shelves.

Announced earlier this month, Disney Infinity 3.0 Starter Packs will launch later this year and include Anakin Skywalker and Ashoka. Both are characters from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, an animated television show that aired on Cartoon Network. Other characters from the Star Wars universe are confirmed for the game, including Han Solo, Darth Vader and Yoda.

Mickey Mouse, Muan, Olaf and Mini Mouse are all confirmed as add-on characters for Disney Infinity 3.0 too. Disney could fully detail what its planning for Disney Infinity 3.0 during this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo happening in mid-June in Los Angeles, California.
