Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge release has come and gone but that doesn’t mean that the show is over. No, rumor has it Samsung has another Galaxy S6 model up its sleeve called the Galaxy S6 Active. Here’s what we know, right now, about the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active release.

In the weeks leading up to Samsung’s Unpacked launch event at Mobile World Congress, we heard a ton about the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Samsung made good on many of those Galaxy S6 rumors when it announced the two devices on stage in Barcelona, Spain.

While these two devices have dominated the spotlight, rumors have pointed to another Galaxy S6 variant, a Galaxy S6 Active. Samsung Galaxy S6 Active rumors picked up a ton of steam right around the April 11th Galaxy S6 release date though up until this week, they were dormant.

This week, we’re finally starting to see the Galaxy S6 Active release gain steam. With that in mind, we want to take a look at what we think we know about the Samsung Galaxy S6 release, Galaxy S6 Active specs, and more. If you haven’t been following along, this will catch you up to speed with Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S6 variant.

Galaxy S6 Active Release Date

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Active release date is rumored for the summer. A specific date hasn’t been outlined but summer starts in late June which means that we could be a few weeks away, at least, from the Galaxy S6 Active release. Last year, AT&T released its Galaxy S5 Active on May 30th.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge release dates fell in line with the company’s release for the regular Galaxy S5. Might we see the company do the same with the “Active” model?

Galaxy S6 Active Carrier

Weeks ago, Japanese site Blog of Mobile spotted the AT&T Galaxy S6 Active lurking on Bluetooth SIG. The filing, for the SM-G890A, doesn’t confirm a release date but it does mean that the Galaxy S6 Active has taken another step toward a release inside the United States.

Samsung’s Galaxy S5 Active came to AT&T as the Galaxy S6 Active while another variant, the Galaxy S5 Sport, landed on Sprint’s LTE network. Thus far, AT&T is the only US carrier rumored to have a Galaxy S6 Active in the works.

Galaxy S6 Active Design

Current Galaxy S6 Active design rumors indicate that it will come with a much larger 3,500 mAh battery and an IP67 certification that will make it water and dust resistant like the Galaxy S5. Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge do not feature a IP67 certification.

Another rumor also suggests that it will come with a microSD card slot for expanded storage, something that the Galaxy S6 doesn’t have.

Is This the Galaxy S6 Active?

Up until this week, we knew a lot about the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active but we didn’t know what the device looked like. Now, we have a pretty good idea about what to expect from the Galaxy S6 Active.

GSMArena recently leaked photos of a device that it claims is the Galaxy S6 Active. The photos depict a device that looks nothing like its Galaxy S6 counterparts.

Photos of unreleased devices in the wild aren’t always what they seem but these photos appear to be genuine. The well known leakster Evan Blass, also known as evleaks, has leaked press photos of the same device. This doesn’t confirm the Galaxy S6 Active’s overall form factor but at this point it’s hard to deny the evidence.

The device appears to have a massive case around it which makes sense given the name “Active.” Samsung’s “Active” branded phones are always rugged so it appears that this phone will indeed be water and dust resistant.

Galaxy S6 Active Specs

According to SamMobile, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active will reportedly feature a 5.1 inch Quad-HD 2560 x 1440 (2K) display, an 8-core Exynos 7420 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of on-board storage and a 16-megapixel rear and 5 megapixel front-facing camera. None of this is confirmed.
