As we push deeper into 2015 more and more users are getting frustrated by the lack of info regarding the Motorola DROID Turbo Lollipop update. Verizon’s DROID Turbo was announced and released back in October, shortly after Google debuted the new Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Many devices have received Lollipop over the past few months, but the DROID Turbo is still stuck on Android 4.4 KitKat. New rumors suggest the update is finally coming in June.

Android L was first announced as Android 4.4 KitKat’s successor back in June during the company’s annual Google I/O developer event. Then in October Google officially unveiled the full Android 5.0 Lollipop update along with the Nexus 6, Nexus 9 tablet, and a new Nexus Player for the TV. Soon after Motorola made some announcements, and they were among the first to update smartphones too.

Currently the Motorola DROID Turbo is running a nearly stock version of Android 4.4.4 KitKat, and has seen a few updates from Verizon already. For months we’ve been hearing the DROID Turbo Lollipop update is coming soon and has yet to surface, but this week our first solid release date has emerged.

The Droid Turbo camera can take great photos, but it isn't always reliable.

Reports and rumors of the update have been surfacing since as far back as December, but the device remains on Android 4.4 KitKat while all other flagship phones, including the Moto X, have been updated to Android 5.0 or Android 5.1 Lollipop. That said, this week we finally learned some key details about when it will arrive, as well as hints regarding some new features for the upcoming Moto X 2015.

Since December we’ve seen Android 5.0 Lollipop arrive for the Moto X, Moto G, and many devices from Samsung, HTC and LG. However, those with the impressive DROID Turbo have been left waiting, with no word from Google or Verizon.

That said, the DROID Turbo Android 5.1 Lollipop update is coming soon, and we’re now hearing mid-June is the release date target. According to Droid-Life, a Verizon Engineer has been talking about the DROID Turbo Lollipop update, delays, as well as potential upcoming features, and he revealed the DROID Turbo should get Android 5.1 Lollipop in “mid-June”.

Jose Arturo, a Verizon Engineer working and testing software updates, posted a picture of the DROID Turbo running Android 5.1 Lollipop on Google+ and answered a lot of questions surrounding the update. According to Arturo a few small bugs with Verizon’s VoLTE (HD-Voice calling) is the cause for the delay, and after fixing a few bugs the software will be released. He specifically states mid-June, but no solid release date has been announced by Verizon themselves.

This is good news for DROID Turbo owners, but at the same time this is only a target date. It could be approved by Verizon and released sooner, or additional problems could surface that cause even more delays. As it stands now though, it should arrive in the middle of June.

It’s worth noting the Verizon Nexus 6 currently runs the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop release, and has HD Voice calling enabled. This is a reason many DROID Turbo owners have grown impatient waiting for the update, but Arturo states Motorola’s team is much smaller, and updates may not arrive as quickly.

All of this said, the Verizon Motorola DROID Turbo Android 5.1 Lollipop update is still in the testing phase, bugs are being squashed and performance improved, and it should arrive soon enough. Possibly around the middle of June, but we will update the moment we know more details or Verizon makes an official announcement.
