Motorola Android 5.1 Lollipop Update Breakdown

Published

on

Over the past month we’ve seen Google’s latest Android release continue to receive small updates all the way to the latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop for Nexus devices. However, those with Motorola smartphones are still waiting for the initial Android 5.1 update to arrive, and below is a breakdown of what we know so far.

This week Google announced the next Android M update, which won’t arrive until later this year, and in the meantime Motorola smartphone owners are still focused on and waiting for Android 5.1 to arrive.

The Android Lollipop update isn’t rolling out to smartphones as fast as Android 4.4 KitKat did, but there are a lot of visual and behind the scenes changes that are making the wait a bit longer than expected. Not to mention bugs were quickly fixed with releases of Android 5.0.1, Android 5.0.2, and then last month a huge Android 5.1 Lollipop release. And while Moto has delivered Android 5.1 to a few devices, a slew of them will jump straight from KitKat to the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop release.

Android 5.0 Lollipop was officially released on November 3rd when Google sent the code to manufacturers, and when the Nexus 9 tablet was released to the public. It only took a week for Motorola to get started, and they kicked things off by updating the Moto X 2014 Pure edition to Android 5.0 on November 10th.

Since then we’ve seen the new Moto G released in 2014 see the update in some regions, not to mention the budget friendly Moto E, and the Moto Maxx (Turbo for outside the US) have also seen updates to Android 5.0 Lollipop. That said, what about the original Moto X, G, E, the DROID Turbo and more? We have the latest news below.

Motorola Updates

The company kicked off Lollipop late last year by launching a new updates webpage with details regarding which devices will see Android 5.0, and when. And while there weren’t actual dates, each device will be updated accordingly and the details will evolve and be refreshed once said handsets get updated.

Motorola has confirmed these devices will all receive Android 5.0 Lollipop soon. And many of them already have received the update, and are now waiting on Android 5.1 to arrive instead.

  • Moto X (1st & 2nd Gen)
  • Moto G (1st and 2nd Gen)
  • Moto G 4G LTE
  • DROID Turbo
  • Moto E
  • DROID Ultra
  • DROID Maxx
  • DROID Mini

Over the past month we’ve seen the original Moto X and Moto G receive Android 5.1 in Brazil, the Moto E was updated in some regions, and Motorola themselves confirmed the Motorola DROID Turbo would jump straight to Android 5.1 Lollipop, we’re just not sure when.

The entire upgrade process has been a bit confusing between all the different versions, old and new Moto X releases, not to mention the updates to Android 5.0.1, 5.0.2, 5.1, and now 5.1.1 all slowing down manufacturers like Motorola.

Yesterday we received what could be the biggest progress report yet, thanks to David Schuster, a Senior Director of software management at Motorola. In a post on Google+ he went over the multiple stages of updates, cleared up some information about a few devices, and is trying to ease owners minds.

Schuster confirmed the Moto X 1st gen, 2nd gen, Pure edition, and even the Moto G are getting 5.1 in Brazil, or at least final testing phases, not to mention the Moto X 2014 and Moto G 4G LTE on US Cellular are getting updates as well. There are a lot of devices in many regions, but Motorola is working as hard as possible to deliver all said updates.

Earlier this month he mentioned that while the company has been busy testing near-final versions of Android 5.0.2 Lollipop for the original Moto X and Moto G, they’ve decided to scrap those upgrades and put all efforts into delivering the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop release instead.

In mid-March Google finally released Android 5.1 Lollipop. This release was aimed at fixing a slew of problems and issues that plagued the initial Lollipop release. Owners that have received updates to Lollipop on the Galaxy S5, Note 4, LG G3, HTC One M8 and more have been frustrated by problems, most of which have been fixed in Android 5.1 Lollipop.

According to his comments the original Moto X, the 2nd Gen Moto X from 2014, the Moto G all variants, Moto E and more are all expected to get Android 5.1 Lollipop in the near future. Some are already under the final “soak test” period and will roll out soon, and others are waiting carrier approval.

At this point that updates could arrive in the next week or so, but most likely all variants mentioned above won’t see Android 5.1 Lollipop (if they haven’t already) until mid-June, if not later. He didn’t have anything to say about the DROID Turbo, but we’ve been hearing the Android 5.1 update for it has been coming any day now for over a month.

What is all comes down to is Motorola is taking the time to skip all the small updates other carriers are pushing out, and instead aiming to go straight to Android 5.1 Lollipop for most devices sometime in the next month or so. The wait is almost over, and we’ll update as we learn more.

have read Schuster’s post and am rather surprised they are releasing the update to the Moto G 4G, surprised because as a testdriver participant in this I can confirm people are reporting bugs with this with each release we have had, some that have not been addressed and still exist with each release. I would not be releasing this update, and considering they have yet to reply to one person in the testdrive whose phone was bricked by the update his post concerns me

It’s been any day now for over 6 months. I’ll have a new phone by the time they get around to releasing it.

My First Gen Moto X is almost outdated now. By the time Lollipop comes around, my phone will die its natural death.
