All you need to try the new OS X 10.11 update before the release this fall and the public beta is the right OS X El Capitan download and a compatible computer. With these instructions you don’t need to wait for the limited public OS X El Capitan beta in July to try all the new OS X 10.11 features.

The new OS X El Capitan release focuses on refining the user experience with helpful new features and better overall performance without the need to upgrade to a new computer. Some of the features require the iOS 9 beta as well as the OS X 10.11 beta to function at this time, like the new Notes features, but you can simply opt out of that until you get iOS 9. You can use this guide to get the iOS 9 beta now for a full experience.

This year Apple plans to offer a public iOS 9 beta in addition to the OS X El Capitan beta, but you need to apply to be in these programs. Unlike the iOS developer beta program, there is no need to register a unique device ID for the Mac you want to install OS X El Capitan on.

The official ways to get the OS X El Capitan are through the Apple Developer program that is $99 a year or through the Apple Beta Software program. There are limitations on what you can share if you use these services, so keep that in mind.

Here’s how to get the OS X El Capitan beta without waiting for Apple. All you really need is the OS X El Capitan download and the ability to click next several times on a computer.

What to Know Before You Install the OS X El Capitan Beta

It is a good idea not to install this beta software on your only computer, and if you are tempted to do this on a work computer, stop right now and wait for an official upgrade. Beta software is not perfect and it is not designed for use on mission critical computers.

Some features may not work correctly, you may find yourself inconvenienced and there is a chance that you could lose data during the upgrade if something goes wrong. Make a good Time Machine backup and prepare yourself for some apps that will not work right on the beta.

The OS X 10.11 update will run on any computer that currently supports OS X Yosemite.

Split View

Split View

The most exciting OS X El Capitan feature to arrive for multitasking users is the new Split View mode. OS X Yosemite allowed users to place two windows side by side, but now it is easier to snap the windows to the left or right without the need to manually size them.

On OS X Yosemite the Gotta Be Mobile team used HyperDock and BetterSnapTool to get a similar snap feature that let us move a window to the side, but now OS X 10.11 builds this support right in.

With the new OS X El Capitan Split View feature users can put two apps up side by side with a split view of the things they need most, swipe back to a desktop easily and create new spaces that remember your app split.
