iPhone 6s: 10 Essential Tips for Buyers

Published

on

The iPhone 6s didn’t make an appearance at WWDC 2015 though thanks to rumors and iOS 9 itself, we know that Apple is likely working on a follow-up (or follow-ups) to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. With an iOS 9 release date now confirmed for the fall, we want to offer some mid-year tips to those that might be thinking about waiting for and buying the new iPhone.

In the weeks leading up to Apple’s WWDC keynote, we saw a number of intriguing rumors emerge. While most of them centered on the Apple Music service coming with iOS 8.4 and iOS 9, we also heard rumors about potential hardware.

Apple’s rumored to have a number of new hardware products up its sleeve including a new Apple TV 2015 and a new iPhone. Or, if rumors are to be believed, iPhones.

iPhone-6-6

iPhone 6s rumors have been emerging at a steady pace as we push toward the fall and excitement is starting to build now that the iOS 9 update is out in the open. With the spotlight on Apple and iOS this week, we’ve received a number of questions from readers, friends, and family about the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s release date.

With that in mind, we want to offer some mid-year tips to those of you who might be thinking about buying the iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus if and when they arrive on shelves. These should help you prepare for any iPhone that Apple releases in 2015, iPhone 6s or not.

iPhone 6s Release Date All but Confirmed

At WWDC 2015, Apple confirmed iOS 9. And while it spent most of the time talking about its features, it also confirmed an iOS 9 release date window that you’re going to want to be aware of if you’re thinking about buying the iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus, the two likely 2015 iPhone models.

The iOS 9 release date is confirmed for the fall which means that the iPhone 6s release date is all but confirmed for the fall. iOS updates always arrive alongside new iPhone hardware and there’s no reason to believe that Apple will extend the life of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus beyond the iOS 9 release.

iPhone-6-2

What this means is that you still have a few months to prepare for an iPhone 6s release date. Or, if you’re looking glass half-empty, it means that you’re going to have to hold onto your old phone for a few more months.

Everything you do from this point forward should be with an iPhone 6s release date in the mid-to-late September range in mind. These next few weeks will go extremely quickly so you’ll want to make sure you’re ready-to-go by then.

Get Familiar with iOS 9 Now

Now is a great time to start looking into iOS 9, the update that will almost certainly accompany the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus to shelves.

Apple didn’t show off everything during its WWDC 2015 keynote. The iOS 9 is a very large update and one that will build on the foundation left behind by iOS 8 and iOS 9. iOS 9 will focus on features like performance and security but it will also introduce new multitasking features and an easier way to switch from Android to iPhone.

iOS 9 download

We recommend keeping up with the iOS 9 update as it makes its way through the beta process. Apple will continue to refine the update at the behest of developers and testers and there’s a good chance that it will add in some new features along the way as well.

Not everyone will want to join the public iOS 9 beta but it’s an option if you want to get hands-on with iOS 9 ahead of the iPhone 6s release date.

Research the Competition

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus rumors point to 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screen sizes. It makes sense given the success of last year’s models and given that this is an iPhone “S” release. We typically don’t see Apple offer a full redesign. It will probably save that for the iPhone 7.

What this means is that you should try and figure out which size you want ahead of the iPhone 6s release. Go into an Apple Store or a carrier location and go hands-on with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus to determine which one suits you better. You won’t want to leave this decision to the last second because iPhones have a tendency to sell out quickly. If you don’t want to move, read our iPhone 6 Plus review and our iPhone 6 review.

LG G4 Back Camera

The iPhones aren’t the only high quality phones on shelves. You’ll want to take a look at the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge from Samsung. You’ll want to look into the LG G4. You’ll want to look into Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Moto X 2015 rumors. You’ll want to look into top budget phones like the Droid Turbo, Moto X 2014, and others.

Don’t sell yourself short. Look at reviews, go hands-on and try to rule out phones ahead of the fall. You’ll be in a much better place if you do.

Keep Tabs on iPhone 6s Rumors

We’ve already seen a ton of iPhone 6s rumors emerge though we’ll likely see even more arrive in the days after WWDC 2015 as Apple starts finalizing features.

There will some rumors that get it wrong but typically we see a number of deadly accurate rumors emerge ahead of time. And that’s why we recommend keeping your eyes glued to the iPhone 6s rumor mill.

By the end, we’ll most likely know most of the features coming with the iPhone 6s. Maybe not in extreme detail but enough to set proper expectations. You’ll want to set proper expectations ahead of the iPhone 6s release.

Decide on Your Storage Needs

We’re still not sure if Apple will bump the iPhone storage from 16/64/128 to 32/64/128 though as we’ve said, the door is open for the company to keep things the way they are.

At this point, we’d research all four. 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB and decide which is going to best suit you. Take a look at your current phone and think about how you might use your next one. The iPhone 6s will probably come with an excellent camera which means that you might finally take a ton of photos and video. Things like that.

Again, certain iPhone models tend to sell out quicker than others (this year it was 16GB/64GB) so you’ll want to have this mapped out ahead of time so that don’t spend money on something you don’t want or need.

Dig Into Potential Carriers

If you’re going to be a free agent this fall, now is a great time to start digging into potential iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus carriers. AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, and U.S. Cellular are all givens but you’ll also want to take a look into pre-paid and regional carriers in your area. We suggest focusing in on a few different items at first:

  • Look into network size and availability in the areas you frequent most.
  • Research data plans and figure out how much data you and your family might use.
  • Gather feedback about customer service. There are differences.

Prepare to Buy the iPhone 6s in a New Way

Looking into data plans is going to be more important than usual. Earlier this month, Apple stopped selling the AT&T iPhone 6 on a two-year contract. It hasn’t stopped selling the others on-contract but it’s a sign of the times.

Carriers like AT&T are pushing customers to plans like AT&T Next. This will likely carry over to the iPhone 6s release which means that you need to prepare for it now so that you aren’t caught off-guard by the changes once the iPhone 6s release date arrives.

We’ve put together a sharp guide that will take you through the changes and show you how it might impact your iPhone 6s purchase this fall.

Look Into Your Upgrade

Now is a great time to look into your upgrade to make sure that you’re eligible or going to be eligible to upgrade to an iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus. You’re not going to want to wait until the last second to do this.

Upgrades can be extremely confusing and there’s a good chance that you’re going to catch something that might be wrong in the weeks leading up to the iPhone 6s. If you nip it in the bud, you’re not going to have to deal with any problems or surprises in the buildup to the iPhone 6s release.

You’ll especially want to look into this if you’re on a plan like AT&T Next or Verizon Edge.

Make Plans for Your Old iPhone

You’re going to have to hold onto your phone a little bit longer but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t start researching what you’ll do with it once you buy an iPhone 6s or something else.

The first step is to ask around amongst your friends and family to see if anyone might need it. If they don’t, or you need the money, now is a good time to look into the market for your current device.

eBay and Craigslist are possibilities though we recommend taking a look at Gazelle, NextWorth or even Amazon. Their prices will fluctuate so you’ll want to keep an eye out and decide on the best time to sell.

Start Saving

If there’s one thing that the iPhone 6s won’t be it’s cheap. iPhones never arrive for less than $200 on-contract and off-contract, they’re typically among the most expensive devices on the market. Throw in the price for a case or a new dock and you’re looking at an extremely costly fall. Now is a great time to start putting a little cash away for the iPhone 6s release date.
