Moto X Android 5.1 Lollipop Update Breakdown [June]

Published

on

Back in May some details regarding the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for the Moto X first and 2nd gen emerged, and the update is finally about to head to US owners. In fact, multiple new details surfaced suggesting Android 5.1 is headed to a few different versions of the Moto X in the United States.

Since the first release of Android 5.0 Lollipop back in October users from all manufacturers have been waiting for it to arrive. Motorola was one of the first to deliver it for the 2nd Gen Moto X from 2014, and those with the original have been stuck waiting for months. However, we finally have some good news.

Lately all the talk has been about the Motorola DROID Turbo, or leaks revealing information about the new 3rd Generation Moto X 2015 coming later this summer, but those with a Moto X released the last two years are finally about to get the latest software.

Earlier this month a Motorola employee shared tons of details on Google+ about Motorola in general, and some of the software update owners have been waiting for. That was about the original Moto X from 2013, but that isn’t the only device getting ready to receive the latest software update.

Verizon Moto X 2014

This weekend Motorola announced what the company calls a “soak test” for the Verizon Moto X 2nd Gen from 2014. This has been confirmed to be Android 5.1 Lollipop, and should start hitting devices today, if it hasn’t already. This is for Motorola Feedback Members to test, and an official update is likely in the works.

Typically soak tests run for 3-6 days, then we quickly see a full out update release for all owners. Which means those with the Verizon Moto X 2nd Gen can expect Android 5.1 Lollipop any day now, possibly before the end of the week.

We’ll update once we know the update is actually rolling out for all owners, not just a soak test for a select few users.

Other Carriers

The same Motorola employee we mentioned above, David, also updated everyone on the global release of Android 5.1 for the 2015 Moto X. Stating that the Android 5.1 Lollipop update is in the final testing phase for multiple owners around the world, and should be coming soon.

He detailed multiple regions that are under the final testing phase, and stated that if all went well it could start this week. And that appears to be happening. That said, it isn’t quite ready for the United States. Verizon appears to be the only carrier preparing for the update, but we can expect to see AT&T and others join in soon enough. It’s also worth noting the Moto X 2nd Gen Pure Edition is receiving a second update to Android 5.1 Lollipop, probably the same final software rolling out today to other Moto X units.

Moto X 1st Gen Android 5.1 Lollipop

If you’ve been patiently waiting for the Android 5.1 Lollipop update to arrive on the original Moto X, we finally have some good news. David announced a full nationwide update of Android 5.1 Lollipop for the original Moto X in the United States, and here’s the full changelog with all the details everyone needs to know. If you’re going right from Android 4.4 to Android 5.1, you’ll want to check out this what’s new guide.

This news is for the unlocked Moto X 1st Gen in the United States. Confirming it’s finally getting Android 5.1 Lollipop, and a full changelog detailing everything that’s new. However, this isn’t for carrier versions, not quite yet. Motorola did however confirm they are in multiple carrier testing labs under the final testing phase, so that update should be coming next.

Unlocked Moto X units will see Android 5.1 Lollipop starting today, and need to opt in and select yes on the notification, and download then reboot to install Android 5.1 Lollipop. Then, we’re expecting other carriers in the United States to either make announcements, start soak tests, or just push the update out themselves. Of course, we’ll update once we learn more about the original Moto X for US carriers.

Those with an unlocked Moto X 1st Gen in the United States can head into settings > about phone > and check for updates to get the latest software update right now, and carrier versions should be up next.

    Highly recommended NOT to
    update…I am regretting. Completely
lost the fluid experience of 4.4. I
    wish I could roll back?

I agree. All the nice MOTO features like proximity sensor to activate the display are gone!

I don’t have 5.x yet but hopefully the features are just turned off. I remember reading that L comes with similar features to what Motorola has had fir years, and you’re able to choose whose version to use (or not at all). If that’s still true, hopefully the moto specific features are just turned off. I really hope that’s all it is because I use those moto features all the time.

I don’t see a keypad after upgrade. Phone is locked and I can’t enter password! Can someone help me? This is ridiculous. Did Moto X do a thorough testing or just threw in an upgrade to score an upmanship in the market?
