4 Reasons Not to Jailbreak iOS 8.4

Published

on

An iOS 8.4 jailbreak has been released, but here’s why you may not want to jailbreak iOS 8.4 on your iPhone or iPad.

TaiG released its updated jailbreak tool today that works with iOS 8.4, allowing users to jailbreak the latest version of iOS. It’s been a crazy few days this month as an iOS 8.3 jailbreak was released last week and received several updates since then.

The iOS 8.3 jailbreak only lasted about a week, which would usually be a bad sign for a jailbreak, but luckily an iOS 8.4 jailbreak has stepped in to take its place. Perhaps the best news is that this jailbreak will likely last throughout the summer until iOS 9 releases, since iOS 8.4 will probably be the last major update to iOS 8.

While many users are excited to install the iOS 8.4 jailbreak, both veterans and new additions to the jailbreak community, jailbreaking may not be the best plan for you, especially if you’ve never have jailbroken a device before.

The process is fairly easy and straightforward, but it’s usually when you start using your iPhone or iPad when things can get tricky. Here are four reasons not to jailbreak iOS 8.4.

No Mac Support Yet

While it’s not necessarily a reason why you shouldn’t jailbreak your iPhone or iPad, having no Mac support for the jailbreak tool is a big hindrance to gaining an iOS 8.4 jailbreak if you have a Mac.

This was the case for the iOS 8.3 jailbreak, as well as the iOS 8.1 jailbreak when it released back in December. Both didn’t offer an OS X version of the jailbreak tool, and the iOS 8.1 jailbreak didn’t receive Mac support until several months after the jailbreak was initially released.

Currently, the TaiG jailbreak tool for iOS 8.4 only works with Windows machines, so Mac users are out of luck, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see a Mac version release at some point in the future.

iOS Instability

It’s not surprising to know that when you jailbreak your iPhone or iPad, you leave your device open to all sorts of instabilities. You’re essentially hacking into your iPhone and changing around the code when you install jailbreak tweaks, and when you do this, you risk losing any stability with iOS.

iOS-8-Cydia

Things like random reboots and jailbreak tweaks that negatively mess with other features on your device are possible with a jailbroken iPhone or iPad. This is why it’s usually not a good idea to jailbreak if you’re new to iOS or a novice user in the first place.

Of course, more experienced users can jailbreak without a problem because they know how to deal with any instabilities that come up, but if you’re already not comfortable with iOS quite yet, it might be best to stay away from jailbreaking for now.

You Can’t Update iOS

While it won’t be a problem for the next few months, a jailbroken iPhone or iPad cannot be updated when a new version of iOS releases, unless that new version is jailbreakable.

This means that if an iOS 8.5 update would release over the summer, you wouldn’t be able to update your device to iOS 8.5, unless it’s jailbreakable, which most likely wouldn’t be the case.

So if you’re one that likes to update iOS to the latest version in order to get the new features and take advantage of the improvements, jailbreaking may not be your cup of tea. However, if you’re someone who can be patient with updating your device, jailbreak away.

Voided Warranty

Another reason why you may not want to jailbreak your iPhone or iPad is because it will void your warranty with Apple, which means that if your device is defective and you need to take it to Apple to get it fix, but they find out that you jailbroke your device, they decide not to fix it based on that. You’ll be out of luck if that happens.

iPhone-6s-Plus-4

Jailbreaking is completely legal, and there’s nothing stopping you from doing it as far as the law is concerned, but Apple has jurisdiction in that area, and if your iPhone or iPad is jailbroken, the company can void your warranty.

Of course, there are easy ways around this, including unjailbreaking your device before you take it to Apple to get repaired. This is about the only sure-fire method for essentially not getting caught. Simply just back up your iPhone or iPad, restore it to factory settings, and then restore the backup to get to an unjailbroken state.

How does one become an experienced jailbreaker if one does not first become a novice jailbreaker?
I’ve been escaping the confines of my apple devices for quite a while and I must say this article isn’t very well researched. For example, Mac users can still jailbreak if they use a virtual machine like “parallels” to run TaiG. That’s what I did and I’ve done it before with no problems.
As for instabilities I believe there have been instabilities in every version of iOS released by apple hence the updates. With iOS 8.2 I remember not being able to use “Home Sharing” because my iTunes library was to large and wouldn’t sync to my iPhone. Updates aren’t just about giving people new features.
Not being able to update? That’s very misleading. You can update any time you like by doing what you said and restoring your iPhone through iTunes and if there isn’t a jailbreak for the next iOS all you lose is the jailbreak and its benefits (which is why most jailbreakers won’t update). Also you mention missing out on the new features of an updated iOS but you don’t mention how often apple has taken their ideas for new features from jailbreak tweaks. Control centre is the perfect example for that. I was using something similar well before apple added it to an iOS update. It was called “SB settings”.
I’m a big fan of apple and their products mainly because of how user friendly they are but I’m also a big fan of customization. I don’t use “newsstand” so why should I be forced to have it installed on my phone from the time I turn it on? Same with things like passbook and stocks. I understand that other people use those and probably love having those apps at their fingertips but couldn’t those be just as easily offered on the App Store so people that use them can add them, while I fill that space on my phone with things that I’ll use like music or pictures.

I work for apple as an iOS advisor for a year and a half .I have been jailbreaking since iOS 4, I have not had any issues that were detrimental and that I could not fix on my own. I use a bootcamp iMac to do all. The article is misleading, and leans more to the side of not jailbreaking as some one who wrote it seems to not be a part of the jailbreak scene and can’t give more educated reasons as to why you should not jailbreak iOS 8.4 .
Reason one stupid reason use a windows computer to do it with or VM bootcamp or parallel not everyone has a Mac based on cost more people own a windows OS machine .
Stability ha ha! So what happened to everyone with the effective power text issue without jailbreak they waited till Apple fixed it, I did not have the problem but if I did jailbreak community fixed the issue in like 2 days with the tweak to fix the message unicode “virus” called ineffective power. Stability is stronger with jailbroken devices in most cases and the device has more options to make it stronger like with iCleaner Pro, to clear out un needed files that block up the device.
Updates? You should know that going in, updating is not going to be something to worry about. you won’t need to update if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!! besides 8.5 is likely to not change or fix much because surprisingly, 8.4 is not all jacked up like its previous brothers in iOS 8.
And last reason Warranty, don’t be stupid apple frowns on jailbreaks so if you have a problem another jailbreaker can’t help with then put the device in recovery mode before bringing it to a genius bar appointment. Simple Jailbreaking makes Apple devices worth using I would not have an iPhone if I could not Jailbreak the samsung 6 was looking very good until this jailbreak was made available makes it more fun for a little longer until I just need a new experience. comment up above mine is very spot on too! thanks for leveling this unbalanced opinion not facts really to me at all and as I said I work for Apple.

I’m going to have to correct one of the points of this article. If you are jailbroken, while you may not be able to update your iDevice over the air, you can still use a Mac or PC with iTunes to update your device to a later version.

Actually, joe jailbreak takes that back. Most of the anti jailbreak articles are just that but you are obviously not anti jailbreak so I retract what I said.
