iOS 8.4 Jailbreak on iPad Mini 2: Impressions & Performance

Published

on

The iOS 8.4 jailbreak was released earlier this week to many excited jailbreakers. Here’s how it performs on the iPad mini 2.

It’s been a busy week or so for the jailbreaking community, as an iOS 8.3 jailbreak was released last week, putting an end to the outdated iOS 8.1.2 jailbreak that’s been around since December. Furthermore, the iOS 8.3 jailbreak received a handful of updates up until an iOS 8.4 jailbreak was released.

The iOS 8.4 update arrived earlier this week and just a couple of hours following it, an iOS 8.4 jailbreak was released by TaiG, perhaps marking it as one of the quickest jailbreak releases we’ve ever seen following an iOS update.

As expected, many users jumped on it and installed the iOS 8.4 jailbreak right away, and I was able to as well, despite the hammered Apple servers slowing down download times.

Both my iPhone 6 and my iPad mini 2 received iOS 8.4 jailbreak treatment. You can read how my iPhone 6 is performing so far with the new jailbreak, but if you’re curious how the iPad mini 2 holds up, here are my first impressions of the jailbreak and the overall performance of iOS 8.4 on the iPad mini 2.

iOS 8.4 Jailbreak Installation

The installation of the iOS 8.4 jailbreak is the same as it was on iOS 8.3. In fact, it’s the same jailbreak tool from TaiG, as it simply received a minor update in order to support iOS 8.4.

It’s important know that the jailbreak tool only works on Windows machines, and it will likely only work on Windows machines. TaiG probably won’t release a Mac version of its jailbreak tool, which is a punch to the gut for Mac users, but TaiG has never developed for Mac in the past, so there’s no reason to believe they’ll do it this time around.

In any case, the jailbreak tool is really easy to use. Plug your device in, open up the tool and click Start. It only takes a couple of minutes to jailbreak, and once it’s done, you’ll have a freshly jailbroken device that you can use right away.

It’s probably not as easy as it used to be on older versions, especially with JailbreakMe, but it’s certainly easy and quick to do regardless.

iOS 8.4 Jailbreak Performance

Since installing the iOS 8.4 jailbreak earlier this week, I haven’t noticed any huge changes in performance compared to when I was on iOS 8.1.2. That’s certainly not a bad thing by any means — You shouldn’t expect to see a huge performance anyway.

I can say, though, that I also haven’t noticed any degradation in performance. The iPad mini 2 itself is a high-performing tablet considering how old it is, but that’s mostly because it received a huge upgrade when it first came out, making it one of the best tablets to get at the time.

With the iOS 8.4 jailbreak on the iPad mini 2, apps load quickly, switching between apps is snappy, and Cydia is a much more stable app this time around. Plus, I haven’t noticed any apps crashing yet, which is a good sign, since the first few days of a new jailbreak can be when major problems come up. However, I haven’t experienced anything major yet.

iOS 8.4 Jailbreak Battery Life

Battery life on the iPad mini 2 is fairly decent to begin with, but the upgrade to iOS 8.4 from iOS 8.1.2 led to a big boost.

I mostly play games on my iPad. Specifically, I play a lot of Clash of Clans, but it’s a serious battery hog. I usually end up having to plug in my iPad every day and a half or so, but with the update to iOS 8.4, I haven’t had to plug in my iPad yet, and it’s been around two days. Of course, it’s getting pretty low now, but if I was still on iOS 8.1.2 I would’ve had to recharge it way earlier.

I’ve seen similar battery life improvements on my iPhone 6 as well, where my battery only went down to about 80% after the work day with light use, whereas before it would get down to 60% or even 50% after the work day with light use. That’s a pretty decent improvement in my book.

iOS 8.4 Jailbreak Tweaks

Since the iOS 8.4 jailbreak is still fairly new, there are still a handful of jailbreak tweaks that don’t yet work properly for the latest version of iOS.

For example, while Springtomize has been updated for iOS 8.4, there are still a few bugs that need worked out, and F.lux and Activator are still not supported just yet. Both have beta versions available that work pretty well, but if you’re not comfortable with beta versions of software, it’s probably best to stay away until stable versions release.

However, most jailbreak tweaks that worked with previous versions of iOS work out of the box with the iOS 8.4 jailbreak, which is great news and it makes it easier for the developers. However, you’ll have to wait a bit longer before every single tweak is updated for the iOS 8.4 jailbreak.
