With a recent update Sony added in the option to automatically download and install updates on the PS4. This sounds like a minor thing if you haven't played a lot of games recently, but it will save you a ton of time and frustration.

When connected to the Internet and with the right option checked the PS4 will download new software updates and install them so you don't waste your limited gaming time waiting for a patch to download and install.

This also means that PS4 game updates will automatically download and install on your console when it is not in use. This also saves a load of time and frustration for you and for friends who might otherwise be waiting for you to update so that you can all play a game together.

Microsoft offers a similar feature on the Xbox One, but we are still constantly manually approving updates and installing game updates when we pop a disk in instead of just playing.
