21-inch iMac

If you've been looking at the 21-inch version of Apple's iMac, you might want to think about holding off because there's reason to believe that the company will offer a refresh later this year to coincide with the release of OS X El Capitan.

In late June, developers poking around the El Capitan Beta discovered code that seems to hint at a Retina 21-inch iMac. The 21-inch iMac currently does not come with a Retina option making this an intriguing detail for those that want the smaller display with higher resolution.

The code found in the El Capitan beta references a Retina display that features 4096 x 2304 resolution also known as 4K resolution. It also mentions Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200, a graphics processor that launched back in June.

These references don't confirm Apple's plans for the fall but it does leave the door open for an iMac refresh. If you've been in the hunt for a new iMac and you can wait for the fall, we recommend waiting.
