5 Reasons Not to Buy the Galaxy Note 4 Right Now

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is an excellent smartphone but it’s a smartphone that you shouldn’t buy right now.

Last September, Samsung took the stage at IFA 2015 in Berlin to announce two brand new Galaxy Note smartphones. One, the Galaxy Note 4. The other, the curved Galaxy Note Edge. The two devices arrived with a number big features and they quickly replaced the Galaxy Note 3 as Samsung’s flagship Galaxy Note smartphones.

Samsung’s 5.7-inch Galaxy Note 4 is one of the best big screen smartphones on the planet and it’s a device that we still love nearly a year after its release. It’s a high quality smartphone, one that you should consider, but it’s not a phone that you should buy right now.

It’s a bad time to buy a good phone. That’s what we’ve told countless readers, friends and family who have asked about the Galaxy Note 4 in the past few weeks. This is a phone that we’ve recommend to countless people since its arrival back in September, a device that we recommend most days. Just not right now.

There are more than a few reasons to avoid the Galaxy Note 4 for the time being (we’re not telling you to avoid the Galaxy Note 4 completely we’re just saying you should do so for the moment) and today we’ll dive into five of the best ones. Here’s why you shouldn’t buy the Galaxy Note 4 right now.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Release Close

The first reason you should pass on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is because the Galaxy Note 5 launch is reportedly just a few short days away.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 launch date isn’t confirmed but it looks like August 12th will be the day. That means that you probably have only a few weeks to go before Samsung announces its Galaxy Note 4 successor. New Galaxy Notes only come once a year which means you’re in a prime position. Hold out for a little while longer and you’ll gain access to a new, and improved, Galaxy Note. Whether or not you buy it will be entirely up to you.

It looks like it will be an extremely tempting phone. The Galaxy Note 5 is rumored to have a 5.7-inch Quad HD display, huge 4,000 mAh battery, new Exynos 7 processor backed by 4GB of RAM, a brand new S Pen, a premium design that’s on par with the Galaxy S6 Edge design, and more.

The Galaxy Note 5 release date is rumored for August 21st in regions like the United States. The device has already cleared the FCC for both AT&T and Verizon, a sign that a release could be weeks, not months, away.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Galaxy Note 5 will probably be one of the first to Google’s Android M (the Galaxy Note 4 will likely have to wait) and that the Galaxy Note 5 will get better software support. The Galaxy Note 4’s already got one year under its belt. Samsung typically offers two.

Note-5-2

Maybe you fall in love with the Galaxy Note 5 and its specs. Maybe not. You won’t know until Samsung announces/releases it so it would be smart to hold off on the Galaxy Note 4 to see which side of the fence you fall on. Of course, the Galaxy Note 5 is just one reason why you shouldn’t buy the Galaxy Note 4 right now.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus

Samsung’s rumored to have another large screen phone up its sleeve for August.

A new Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, or Galaxy S6 Edge+, is rumored to be making its arrival alongside the Galaxy Note 5 in early August. The device won’t be a Galaxy Note (that means no S Pen) but it does look like it will feature a massive display, something that could be intriguing to potential Galaxy Note 4 buyers.

The company’s blown up version of the Galaxy S6 Edge is expected to come with a massive 5.7-inch Quad HD display that bends over both sides of the device. If you’re familiar with the Galaxy S6 Edge, you’re already familiar with a lot of what the Galaxy S6 Edge+ will have to offer.

Note-5-10

It’s also is also expected to feature a Exynos 7420 processor with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 16MP rear camera, a 5MP front-facing camera, a large 3,000 mAh battery, and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop (Samsung’s latest). Again, it’s not expected to have an S Pen but it’s important to note that a lot of Galaxy Note owners don’t use the S Pen.

The Galaxy S6 Edge Plus is expected to be released alongside the Galaxy Note 5 and we think it’s another reason why you should hold out if you can. It appears to be a solid alternative to the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy Note 4.

iPhone 6s Plus Release Inching Closer

Rumor has it, Apple’s got another big screen phone up its sleeve. Last year, Apple released an iPhone 6 Plus to counter the Galaxy Note 4 and this year, it reportedly has a successor cooked up to battle the Galaxy Note 5.

iPhone 6s Plus rumors have been flying around for weeks now and it looks like Apple will release a next-gen 5.5-inch iPhone to challenge the Galaxy Note 5 this fall during the holiday shopping season. If you’re not married to the idea of buying an Android and you can wait a few more weeks, we recommend holding out for this phone.

iPhone-6s-Plus-4

Apple’s iPhone 6s is rumored for September and it’s expected to be an attractive alternative to the Galaxy Note 5/Galaxy Note 4 thanks to its large screen, premium design, upgraded camera, iOS 9 software, and more.

Even if you come away from the iPhone 6s launch unimpressed, we’ll likely see widespread iPhone 6 Plus price cuts giving you access to a cheaper Galaxy Note 4 competitor. If you can wait until early September, wait until early September.

OnePlus Two

Last year’s OnePlus One was a surprise hit thanks to its cheap price tag and premium specs which included a large high-resolution display. OnePlus has already confirmed a successor for last year’s flagship and we only have a few days to go before its unveiling.

OnePlus-two-price

The OnePlus Two launch is confirmed for July 27th and it’s there that the company will showcase its brand new device. Like its predecessor, it’s expected to come with a ton of firepower including a spacious 5.5-inch display that puts it into the same conversation as the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note 5.

The OnePlus One was excellent and this phone has the potential to standout amongst the top devices on the market. We think it’s worth waiting for.

Galaxy Note 4 Price Cuts

You shouldn’t buy the Galaxy Note 4 right now because it’s about to get cheaper. Sure, we’ve seen select Galaxy Note 4 deals emerge in the buildup to the Galaxy Note 5 launch but there will be more.

Once the Galaxy Note 5 is announced, we’ll see Galaxy Note 4 price cuts. And once it’s released, we’ll see permanent price cuts at carriers in the United States around the world. If you buy the Galaxy Note 4 right now, you’re probably going to be overpaying for it. There’s no reason to do that.

Note-4-7

Instead, you should hold out for a few weeks. You’ll not only gain access to some serious Galaxy Note 4 competitors but you’ll also gain access to a more affordable Galaxy Note 4 across all major carriers.

10 Things to Do Before the Galaxy Note 5 Release Date

Research Your Galaxy Note 5 Storage Needs

Research Your Galaxy Note 5 Storage Needs

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 isn't official yet but that doesn't mean that you can't prepare for its arrival. There are a number of things you can do ahead of Samsung's announcement and release and deciding on how much storage you might need is one of them.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 design is reportedly going to be similar to the Galaxy S6's. That means premium build materials but it also means no microSD card slot for expanded storage. If this is true, and it probably is, it's going to put pressure on you to figure out how much internal storage you'll need.

If Samsung's Galaxy Note 5 doesn't feature expandable storage, it'll likely come with several storage options. Those storage options will vary in price. You don't want to pay for storage that you're never going to need so you'll want to think about this ahead of time.

Take a look at your current device, think about how you might use your next phone, and estimate how much storage it will take to feel comfortable. For some of you, it might be 32GB. For others, it might be a 128GB of space.

We don't know how much the Galaxy Note 5 will come with yet but chances are we'll see some sort of combo featuring 32GB, 64GB and 128GB.
