Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 Release: 5 Things to Know Now

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 release is finally here though it’s scope is extremely limited. With the first Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 update now available in the United States, we take a look at what users need to know about the update’s roll out.

In April, Google started rolling out Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, a bug fix update that patched up many of the problems plaguing Lollipop and its Android 5.1 release.

After Google’s Android 5.1.1 deployment for Nexus devices, other Android manufacturers started rolling the update out. In June, Samsung started rolling the Android 5.1.1 update out to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge and a Galaxy S5 Android 5.1.1 update soon followed.

Last month, we saw a number of new Galaxy Android 5.1.1 details emerge including details about the Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 update. The update made a brief appearance in Russia though the software did not roll out Over-the-Air en masse.

We expected to see new Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 details emerge in August and sure enough, today has proven to be extremely fruitful. Today, the Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 update has started rolling out Over-the-Air bringing Samsung’s current flagship to the most current version of Lollipop.

With the Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update rolling out, here’s what owners in the United States and abroad need to know about the device’s latest upgrade.

Things to Do Before Updating to Android 5.1.1

With the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 update rolling out, now is a great time for all Galaxy Note 4 users to start preparing for the update’s arrival. We still don’t know when or where it will head next but that should stop you from doing some prep work right now.

We’ve put together a game plan for Galaxy users and it starts with some steps to take before installing the Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 update. These will help you cut down on potential problems and ensure a smooth transition from an older version of Lollipop to Android 5.1.1.

Galaxy Note 4 users will also want to take a look at our Android 5.1.1 Lollipop release date tips. These tips will come in handy on the day that your update arrives which means they’re worth a look if you own a Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

You don’t need to follow them all but a little preparation ahead of an upgrade can go a long way, especially if you’re new to Android.

Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 Update

The Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 update is going to start rolling out to users soon and it brings a number of changes along with it.

Samsung’s confirmed the release of the Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 update though Sprint still isn’t listing the change on its website. Samsung says that the update should start rolling out today so it should only be a matter of time before Sprint confirms.

Sprint’s Galaxy Android releases typically roll out to owners within a week or two. So if you don’t see the update today there’s a good chance you’ll see it within a week or so. Sprint’s updates are rolled out randomly so there’s no predict when you might get it.

Sprint’s Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 release is 615MB which makes it a substantial update for the device. The update is focused on enhancements and bug fixes and it comes with a patch for a nasty bug called Stagefright. Sprint and Samsung are among the first to patch it up.

The update also comes with:

  • Android version 5.1.1, Lollipop OS Upgrade
  • Message Waiting Indicator fix
  • Security fix (Stagefright)
  • Misc. bug fixes

We expect the other Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 updates, if there are other Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 updates, to be modeled off of Sprint’s release.

Other U.S. Galaxy Note 4 Releases MIA

Sprint is the first U.S. carrier to confirm and release a Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 update. AT&T, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon haven’t confirmed anything and there’s a good chance that they won’t say much ahead of release.

T-Mobile is the only major U.S. carrier that outlines updates ahead of time and its software upgrade page doesn’t list any upcoming software updates for the Galaxy Note 4. That doesn’t mean that the update isn’t coming but it means that we may not see it get listed there before a release.

AT&T, U.S. Cellular and Verizon typically don’t confirm updates before their release so Galaxy Note 4 customers on those carriers need to know that you’ll most likely be waiting in silence. Android 5.1.1 updates are possible but with Android M on the way, anything is possible at this point.

Other Carriers Silent

U.S. carriers aren’t the only staying quiet about Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 updates.

International carriers remain mum on their Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 plans. Rogers Canada, SFR in France, and various Australian carriers are well known for their communication ahead of time. As of right now, none of them have confirmed Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 updates.

Note-4-3

This doesn’t mean that Galaxy Note Android 5.1.1 updates won’t roll out but it does mean that users on those carriers could be in for a bit of a wait. We typically see these carriers confirm updates weeks ahead of their public release.

With the Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 update now pushing out, you’ll want to be on your toes if you live in the United States or abroad. Sprint probably won’t be the only one to push out an Android 5.1.1 update to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 Problems & Fixes

The Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 update is young so we haven’t been able to track down any problems plaguing users. That said, we know that the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S5 Android 5.1.1 updates have been causing problems so there’s a good chance that Android 5.1.1 will bring some problems to the Galaxy Note 4.

In response to these issues, we put together a list of fixes for common Android 5.1.1 problems that could help if you run into battery life issues, Wi-Fi problems or issues with performance after installing the Android 5.1.1 update. Commit these fixes to memory so that you’re ready when your update arrives.

10 Things to Do Before the Galaxy Note 5 Release Date

Research Your Galaxy Note 5 Storage Needs

Research Your Galaxy Note 5 Storage Needs

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 isn't official yet but that doesn't mean that you can't prepare for its arrival. There are a number of things you can do ahead of Samsung's announcement and release and deciding on how much storage you might need is one of them.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 design is reportedly going to be similar to the Galaxy S6's. That means premium build materials but it also means no microSD card slot for expanded storage. If this is true, and it probably is, it's going to put pressure on you to figure out how much internal storage you'll need.

If Samsung's Galaxy Note 5 doesn't feature expandable storage, it'll likely come with several storage options. Those storage options will vary in price. You don't want to pay for storage that you're never going to need so you'll want to think about this ahead of time.

Take a look at your current device, think about how you might use your next phone, and estimate how much storage it will take to feel comfortable. For some of you, it might be 32GB. For others, it might be a 128GB of space.

We don't know how much the Galaxy Note 5 will come with yet but chances are we'll see some sort of combo featuring 32GB, 64GB and 128GB.

The update is a disaster. I now have a hot pink and baby blue calender. The battery drains, in standby, at 2% per minute, multiple attempts are required for it to start up (link to network) it drops calls like crazy, font too small to read etc. My phone worked just fine. If it isn’t broken . . . don’t fix it. I will switch carriers (after 30 years) and phone makers as necessary to escape this carnival of errors . . . complete with clown color scheme.

Updated today 8/13/15 Note 4 Andriod 5.1.1. I have had my phone at least three times today just lock on its own and stay locked for quite some time before allowing me to access anything again. The screen quite literally just goes black. Hope they fix this bug soon.

Update os a complete disaster. Black screen lockdowns, app freezes then goes to blank wallpaper and then proceeds to jam all notifications into a lock screen requiring me to unlock. Happens numerous times during listening to music, youtube, facebook, internet, and it even froze while typing this. Cant backup to 5.0 or 5.1 because of new “security policy updates”.

Paid top dollar for Note 4 International Version (unlocked – SM-N910F). It was the single most expensive smartphone at the time. I am still waiting for Android 5.1.1 Lollipop while every single other smartphone released at the time already have it, including some versions of this device. I bought it in January, when it was released in my country.
If this is not treating their customers like garbage, I don’t know what is.
When I buy a premium product from a company, its flagship, its most expensive product, I expect to receive premium support for it. I had to wait MONTHS to receive 5.0 after all other devices received it, and it was this device’s first update! In what world is this acceptable?

This was the last drop of trust that I gave Samsung when I bought this device. Also, it was the last time I spent money in a Samsung product. Never again.
