Galaxy Note 5 vs. Galaxy S6: What We Know So Far

Published

on

Last month was a busy one for the rumored Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S6. With a Galaxy Note 5 release date rumored to be getting closer, we want to take a look at some of the key things buyers need to know as we transition into August.

Back in February, Samsung took the stage at Mobile World Congress 2015 and announced two follow-ups to the Samsung Galaxy S5 from 2014. In April, Samsung released those two devices as the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, two flagship models that compliment the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are two of the best Android smartphones available though they are going to face stiff opposition later this year. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are rumored to be coming out in September though the Galaxy S6 will likely battle some in-house competition as well.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 rumors have been swirling for a number of months now and it looks like things will come to a head in the near future as Samsung’s confirmed a key date that smartphone buyers need to circle on their calendar. In pen.

Galaxy Note 5 rumors were rampant in July and we also saw key Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge details emerge. With all of that in mind, we want to take a look at everything prospective buyers need to know as we inch our way closer to the Galaxy Note 5 launch and release date.

This comparison takes a look at specs but it also delves into some of the smaller details that you should be aware of if you’re debating between these two phones. Here’s what you need to know about the Galaxy Note 5 vs. Galaxy S6 as we move into August.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Launch Date

If you’re thinking about buying the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, or both, you’re probably curious about the Galaxy Note 5 launch date. Samsung hasn’t confirmed a Galaxy Note 5 launch date but it’s clear that August 13th will be the day that it details its new phone(s).

Samsung recently sent out media invites for an August 13th launch event. The company didn’t say what it would be announcing but Galaxy Note 5 rumors have all pointed to a launch in and around August 13th. We have a few more clues though.

Unpacked-Note

First, Samsung uses Unpacked launch events for big flagship announcements. The Galaxy Note 5 definitely fits the bill.

Second, the company’s confirmed that new flagship smartphone announcements are imminent. We doubt it’s lying to investors.

And third, Samsung’s started promoting its “phablet” line ahead of its August 13th Unpacked launch date. The Galaxy Note series is bigger than most phones and it will be Samsung’s job to sway consumers to its new big screen devices.

If you’re interested in the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge or Galaxy Note 5, you’d be wise to wait until August 13th. We should see a Galaxy Note 5 announcement that day.

Samsung’s going to be hosting an event that starts at 11AM EST. The live stream should start a few minutes before that and it will allow those of you at home to follow all of Samsung’s announcements.

Galaxy Note 5 Release Date

If you’re interested in these two phones, you’re probably interested in the Galaxy Note 5 release date. Here’s what we know right now about the Galaxy Note 5 release.

We know that rumors have pointed to a release date on August 21st. It looks like that release date will encompass several regions though it’s not clear if it will include North America and the United States. The door is open but we haven’t been able to confirm either way.

Note-5-11

We know that the AT&T, Sprint and Verizon Galaxy Note 5 variants have passed through the FCC’s clutches. Clearance at the FCC is required before a phone can be released to the public so the fact that these three models have passed with flying colors means they’re ready for their release.

As we’ve noted many times, the fact that they’ve cleared the FCC is a sign that their release could come much earlier this year.

Samsung is reportedly moving the Galaxy Note 5 release date up to put some space between it and Apple’s rumored iPhone 6s release date in September. The Galaxy Note release typically takes place in the September-November release window ahead of the holidays.

With a Galaxy Note 5 release date rumored for August, we should see the company outline the release in detail during the device’s launch event.

And this, evidently, is the Galaxy Note 5 next to a larger version of the Galaxy S6 Edge called the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+.

Droid-Life has also leaked some photos of what could be the Galaxy Note 5 in the wild. What we’re seeing is what rumors have been telling us all along. That the Galaxy Note 5 is essentially a larger version of the Galaxy S6 with its metal frame and glass back. There are some similarities but there are also some differences.

Design Similarities

Note-5-11

The build materials appear to be similar. Samsung made a huge shift with its Galaxy S6 design language and it appears the Galaxy Note 5 will follow its lead with glass and metal.

It also looks like the Galaxy Note 5 will be thin. The Galaxy Note 5 form factor is rumored to be around 7+mm thin. The Galaxy S6 is 6.8mm, the Galaxy S6 Edge 7mm. These photos don’t confirm the exact specifications.

The Galaxy Note 5 design is not expected to feature a microSD card slot for expanded storage. It’s also not expected to feature a removable battery. Neither of these are included with the Galaxy S6.

Finally, the bottom of the Galaxy Note 5 looks similar to the Galaxy S6’s. The speaker grille, headphone jack and USB port are in similar places. The USB port is expected to be regular USB not USB Type-C.

Design Differences

There are also some differences between the two designs. The most obvious one is the S Pen holster located on the bottom of the Galaxy Note 5. The Galaxy S6 doesn’t come with an S Pen.

The photos also reveal a Galaxy S6 Edge style curve to the back of the phone that could help improve grip. The Galaxy Note 5 is expected to be a large phone and Samsung will want to ensure that buyers feel maximum comfort when using it with one hand.

Specs Battle

For weeks, we’ve seen Galaxy Note 5 specs leak to the surface outlining everything from the internal storage to the battery size. Here’s how those specs are comparing to the Galaxy S6.

Galaxy S6

  • 5.1-inch Quad HD display – 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution at 577 PPI.
  • 5.1-inch Galaxy S6 Edge variant with curved display
  • 16MP rear camera / 5MP front-facing camera
  • Exynos 7420 octa-core processor
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 32GB / 64GB / 128GB internal storage
  • 2,550 mAh battery (Galaxy S6) / 2,600 mAh (Galaxy S6 Edge)
  • Android 5.1.1 Lollipop

Galaxy Note 5

  • 5.7-inch (5.66) Quad HD display
  • 16MP rear camera / 5MP front-facing camera
  • Exynos 7420 octa-core processor / Exynos 7422 octa-core processor
  • 4GB of RAM
  • 32GB / 64GB / 128GB internal storage
  • 3,000 mAh battery / 4,000 mAh battery
  • Android 5.1.1 Lollipop

There’s been a bit of back and forth about some of these specs but most of them are firmed up. The Galaxy Note 5 should feature a large high-resolution display, 4GB of RAM, and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. It should also come with a ton of internal storage like the Galaxy S6.

Rumors haven’t been able to pinpoint the exact processor and we’ve heard both Exynos 7422 and Exynos 7420 (same processor as the Galaxy S6). Galaxy Note 5 battery rumors haven’t firmed up either though it does look like the battery will be bigger than the ones found in the Galaxy S6.

Galaxy S6 Deals

The Galaxy Note 5 will be expensive. Samsung’s Galaxy Note series has always checked in at $299.99 on-contract and judging by the company’s language, we should see the high-end device maintain its premium price point.

Galaxy-S6-15

The Galaxy S6 should be cheaper. With new Galaxy phones and the iPhone 6s on the way, Samsung’s cut the price of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. We’re starting to see retailers and carriers enact these price drops and we expect to see more in the future.

Changes to the Way You’ll Buy

In addition to these Galaxy S6 deals, we’ve seen carriers make changes to the way you’ll buy the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy Note 5.

AT&T recently bumped the price of its two year contract activation fee to $45 ($5 more than Verizon). It also put a new AT&T Next upgrade fee in place. Those who upgrade on AT&T Next will need to pay the carrier $15. This will apply to the Galaxy Note 5. AT&T isn’t the only one.

Galaxy-S6-Edge-14

A source recently told Gotta Be Mobile that the death of two-year contracts at Verizon is near. We’ve been told that Verizon’s switch from Verizon Edge to Device Payment plans is one of the final steps before the carrier makes its bold move.

We’re not sure when this will happen but wouldn’t be surprised if it happens soon with tons of new phones on their way.

Galaxy S6 Edge Competitor

Finally, it’s worth noting that the Galaxy S6 Edge, the curved Galaxy S6 variant, will be getting some competition from a larger version dubbed Galaxy S6 Edge+.

The device is expected to arrive alongside the Galaxy Note 5 later this month and feature a large curved display without an S Pen. It’s not supposed to be a Galaxy Note Edge successor.

The device’s full spec sheet has reportedly leaked and it includes 4GB of RAM, 16MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing camera, and a Exynos 7420 processor.

Galaxy Note 5 Release (U.S.): 10 Important Details

Samsung Note 5 Launch Date Confirmed

Samsung Note 5 Launch Date Confirmed

If you're thinking about buying a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 in the United States, the first thing you need to know is that the Galaxy Note 5 launch date is all but confirmed for August. As we mentioned, this is much earlier than IFA 2015.

Samsung is reportedly worried about the impact the iPhone could have on the Galaxy Note 5's success so it's launching it a little earlier this year. How early? August 13th early

The company recently sent out invites for an Unpacked launch event for August 13th in New York City. The company hasn't outlined what it will be announcing there but it saves Unpacked events for its biggest launches. And that means that we'll probably see the Galaxy Note 5, and all of its details, arrive there.

With less than two weeks to go, we expect Galaxy Note 5 rumors to continue as Samsung's plans for the phone's release firm up behind the scenes.

I’m amazed at your ability to write paragraphs upon paragraphs where a simple sentence would’ve sufficed. I commend you, Master at fluffery.
