The iOS 9 is currently in testing. Developers and those in the Beta Software Program are poking and prodding the update in an effort to weed out issues ahead of the update's release date. 

Both of these betas should go a long way and the developer beta in particular should help most apps make a smooth transition from iOS 8 to iOS 9.

We expect app developers to start issuing iOS 9 compatiblity updates shortly before the iOS 9 release date in September.

We typically install these updates as soon as they become available and we typically come out of the iOS release date unscathed. Expect these updates to help on your iPhone 5.
