Should You Update to iOS 8.4.1 and Lose Your Jailbreak?

With iOS 8.4.1 now out and the iOS 8.4 jailbreak no longer possible on the latest version of iOS, should you update to iOS 8.4.1 and lose your jailbreak?

The iOS 8.4.1 update was released earlier this month as a minor incremental update to iOS 8.4. It comes with a handful of bug fixes and performance improvements, but it also patches up the TaiG iOS 8.4 jailbreak, meaning that iOS 8.4.1 is unjailbreakable.

However, those that haven’t updated to iOS 8.4.1 can still jailbreak their iPhone or iPad running iOS 8.4.0, as that version is still able to be jailbroken, but if you’re thinking about updating to iOS 8.4.1 for the fixes and improvements, just be aware that you’ll lose your jailbreak.

However, perhaps the big question here is you should you update to iOS 8.4.1 and lose your jailbreak? It was a question we answered back when iOS 8.3 released when there wasn’t an iOS 8.3 jailbreak at the time, and it’s a good question to answer now with iOS 8.4.1.

If you’re jailbroken on iOS 8.4.0, is it a good idea to update to iOS 8.4.1 and lose your jailbreak?

Before answering this question, you’ll want to know what new changes are included in iOS 8.4.1 and if they’re worth having and losing your jailbreak. Mostly, the iOS 8.4.1 update includes minor fixes to Apple Music:

• Resolves issues that could prevent turning on iCloud Music Library
• Resolves an issue that hides added music because Apple Music was set to show offline music only
• Provides a way to add songs to a new playlist if there aren’t any playlists to choose from
• Resolves an issue that may show different artwork for an album on other devices
• Resolves several issues for artists while posting to Connect
• Fixes an issue where tapping Love doesn’t work as expected while listening to Beats 1

There are also a handful of security fixes that were included in the update, making iOS safer overall. However, the biggest changes are with Apple Music, and if you’re someone who uses the streaming service often, then iOS 8.4.1 is a fairly big update.

However, is updating to iOS 8.4.1 worth losing your jailbreak? Overall, I’d say absolutely now, unless you’re having major problems with Apple Music that are making you aggravated. Personally, I don’t use Apple Music and the security fixes really aren’t anything groundbreaking in the first place, so I’d rather stay on iOS 8.4.0 and keep my jailbreak.

Plus, you could come across problems with the iOS 8.4.1 update, especially on your iPhone 5, as we came across problems on the device with the new update. So if you have an older device, updating to iOS 8.4.1 might not be a great idea right now.

Unfortunately, if you updated to iOS 8.4.1 and want to downgrade to iOS 8.4, you can no longer do so, as Apple as stopped signing iOS 8.4. However, it appears that an iOS 8.4.1 jailbreak has been achieved, as Pangu teased it over the weekend. It’s doubtful that Pangu will release it to public, as it would give Apple the chance to patch it up before releasing iOS 9.

This means that iOS 9 will be the next version to get a jailbreak, and the timeline for that is completely unknown at this point, but we’re guessing jailbreak developers will begin working on once the final version is released next month.

iOS 9 will have the same overall look and feel as iOS 8, but come with a handful of new features that users will enjoy, but the only thing on jailbreakers’ minds are whether or not it will be jailbreakable, and that’s something that may not happen until a few months after iOS 9’s release, since any big update usually doesn’t get jailbroken right away.
