5 Reasons Not to Install iOS 9

Published

on

Tomorrow is the iOS 9 release date and many iPhone and iPad users are going to be tempted to install the new software right when it’s released. The update is exciting but there are some reasons why you might want to consider skipping the iOS 9 update tomorrow.

In June, Apple confirmed its iOS 9 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. On stage, the company detailed the iOS 9 release window, the devices getting the iOS 9 update, and the many features that will accompany the software to Apple’s fleet of iPhones and iPads.

Last week, iOS 9 was once again in the spotlight thanks to the company’s iPhone 6s media event in San Francisco. There the company confirmed an iOS 9 release date for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and September 16th is the big day.

The iOS 9 release date lands tomorrow and it’s a big day for many iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users. It’s also a big day for developers.

The spotlight is on the iOS 9 update. And because it’s such a prominent update, many users are going to be tempted to install it right when it comes out. We know because we’re tempted to install it right when it’s released too.

While there are certainly some reasons to install the iOS 9 tomorrow or whenever you find it, there are also some reasons why you might want to avoid it, at least at first.

Remember, Apple never forces you to install an update so you have all the time in the world to determine when you want to install the iOS 9 update on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. That said, here are some people that shouldn’t install iOS 9 right off the bat.

You’re Not Prepared for iOS 9

Do not install the iOS 9 update tomorrow (or on any other day) if you and your device aren’t prepared for it.

You do not want to install iOS updates blindly, especially massive updates like iOS 9 that come with a ton of changes. You’ll want to dig in and make sure that you know what you’re getting into. There’s a good chance you’ll love what it brings to the table but there’s also the other side of the coin.

On top of preparing yourself, you’ll want to prepare your device for the iOS 9 update. We’ve put together a guide that will take you through some steps to take before the iOS 9 release. This is especially important if you own an older device. You’ll really need to prepare.

If you haven’t done any of this, and you’re new to the iPhone or iPad, do not install iOS 9. Do some prep work and the transition should go smoothly. If you spend a day or two hunting for feedback and learning about iOS 9, you’ll gain confidence. And that’s important going into a big release like iOS 9.

You Need Your Phone/Apps for Work & School

If you need your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch for your job or for school, you’re going to want to be extremely careful with the iOS 9 update.

The iOS 9 update has gone through extensive beta testing, both public and private, and we’re expecting it to be more stable than last year’s iOS 8 update. That said, there is still a potential for problems and we expect to be see iOS 9 issues impact device performance and app performance.

Unfortunately, it’s extremely difficult to predict who or what will be impacted by iOS 9 problems so you’ll want to play it safe if you’re going to be dependent on your phone, tablet or a certain app for school or work this week.

You’ll need to determine if the iOS 9 update and its features are worth the risk. To do that, you’ll need to speak to IT (if you have an IT department), consult iOS 9 app reviews, and gather feedback. You may not be able to do this on the iOS 9 release date itself.

You’re Traveling

We’ve said this before and we’re saying it again. If you’re traveling for business or pleasure, you might want to save the iOS 9 update for whenever you get back.

iOS 9 Review - 12

iOS updates have the potential to wreck havoc on device performance and the last thing you want to be doing during an important business or family trip is dealing with iOS 9 problems on your phone or tablet. If you didn’t prepare ahead of time (like say, make a backup), these problems could prove to be devastating.

If you’re not going to be at home base tomorrow and you’re not dealing with any major iOS problems at the moment, hold off on iOS 9.

You Own an Older Device

Older devices are typically most affected by iOS problems. We see it every year. And while iOS 9 is expected to improve performance on devices like the iPhone 4s and iPad 2, there’s also a potential for it to negatively impact stability.

We highly recommend waiting a few hours or better yet, a few days, for the iOS 9 release date smoke to settle before you install the iOS 9 update on an older device like the iPhone 4s or iPad 2, especially if it’s your only device.

No Downgrade Path

If your device is running something older than iOS 8.4.1, and you’re not having any problems, you’ll really want to be careful because once you install iOS 9, there’s no going back.

iOS 9 midnight release

Once iOS 9 is released, Apple should continue signing off on the iOS 8.4.1 update. This will allow you to return to iOS 8.4.1 if the iOS 9 update doesn’t work out. Thing is, you won’t be able to go back to anything older than iOS 8.4.1.

So if you’re still rocking iOS 8.3.1 or something older like iOS 7, you’ll want to be extremely careful with iOS 9. Wait a few days (or however long it takes you to determine if iOS 9 is worth it), gather feedback on your specific update, and then make your move.

You’re Jailbroken & There’s No Jailbreak

And finally, you’ll want to skip the iOS 9 update if you’re jailbroken. We still don’t know if developers will release an iOS 9 jailbreak on iOS 9 release date so you’ll want to avoid the iOS 9 update until one is released.

There is no iOS 8.4.1 jailbreak so if you want to jailbreak your phone or tablet, you need to be on Apple’s iOS 8.4 update. Unfortunately, there is no way to get to iOS 8.4 if you aren’t already on it.

We know that an iOS 9 jailbreak is in development but we have no idea when developers might release it. It could come tomorrow, it could come several weeks from now.

Keep an eye on the Twitter accounts of prominent developers for updates immediately after the iOS 9 release and in the days ahead.
