iOS 9 Jailbreak: 3 Things to Know

Published

on

iOS 9 officially releases today and will be available to all iPhone and iPad users, but what about an iOS 9 jailbreak? Here are three things to know about the iOS 9 jailbreak.

It’s been a fairly successful summer for the jailbreaking community. An iOS 8.3 jailbreak was released in early June, with an iOS 8.4 jailbreak releasing later that month just hours after the iOS 8.4 update itself was released, making it one of the quickest jailbreak releases we’ve seen in a while.

However, Apple eventually released the iOS 8.4.1 update, which patched up the iOS 8.4 jailbreak from TaiG. Of course, those still on iOS 8.4.0 could still jailbreak their devices, but once you updated to iOS 8.4.1, it was game over. That will be the case with iOS 9 as well.

The good news is that iOS 9 has been in beta mode ever since early June when Apple first announced and unveiled iOS 9, which means that jailbreak developers have no doubt been tinkering around with the new version over the last couple of months in order to find exploits that they could use to jailbreak the new version of iOS.

If you’re curious about the iOS 9 jailbreak, here are three things you should know about it.

iOS 9 Jailbreak Status

There hasn’t been a whole lot of action as far as the iOS 9 jailbreak is concerned, but that could be because developers are keeping it under wraps. However, one well-known jailbreak developers recently teased an iOS 9 jailbreak on YouTube.

iH8sn0w has successfully discovered an iOS 9 jailbreak, complete with untether, and he even posted a video to prove that it’s legitimate.

This at least tells us that an iOS 9 jailbreak is possible. However, it’s also possible that Apple fixed a few more things and patched up some stuff since that video was published, meaning that developers might need to find another way in once iOS 9 is officially released.

Of course, iH8sn0w didn’t reveal any of the exploits that were used, and he probably will never reveal that information, but it at least proves that iOS 9 probably won’t be all too difficult to break into.

iOS 9 Jailbreak Release

Perhaps the biggest thing that jailbreakers are curious about is when an iOS 9 jailbreak will release, and the simple answer to that is “no one knows.”

Even the jailbreak developers themselves probably don’t know when they’ll release an iOS 9 jailbreak, simply because they need to need to create the jailbreak first, and who knows how long that will take.

The iOS 9 jailbreak release also needs to be released at the optimal time. For instance, it’s rumored that iOS 9.1 will release at some point when the iPad Pro releases, which will be in November. It’s possible that jailbreak developers will wait until iOS 9.1 is released before releasing an iOS 9 jailbreak, just to make sure that Apple doesn’t immediately patch up the jailbreak in iOS 9.1.

This was the case for iOS 8, as developers didn’t release a jailbreak when iOS 8.2 was released, for fear that iOS 8.3 was going to release soon anyway and they didn’t want Apple patching up the exploits.

iOS 9 Jailbreak Features

When an iOS 9 jailbreak does release, users will be able to do all sorts of fun stuff with their iPhones and iPads running iOS 9, but it will really come down to what tweaks are available on the new version of iOS 9.

Unfortunately, many jailbreak tweaks aren’t updated immediately when a new jailbreak releases, as each tweak developer needs to update their tweaks themselves in order to work on a newer version of iOS, so it’s possible that when an iOS 9 jailbreak releases, many tweaks may not be compatible out of the gate.

The good news is that there might be more new tweaks that we’ll see with iOS 9. We’ve already wrote down our wishlist for iOS 9-specific jailbreak tweaks that we’d like to see. Plus, there are several jailbreak tweaks that Apple themselves have included in iOS 9 by default.
