If you don’t want to do this setup process on your own, you can schedule a personal setup with Apple or you can normally ask your carrier to help you set up your iPhone, but most users can complete the iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus setup at home in 15 to 30 minutes.

Restoring from a backup will take a little longer, but you simply wait for that to complete.

iPhone 6s Setup Guide

Here’s how you can set up your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus. Plan on at least 15 minutes for the initial setup, and a while longer for the restore from backup option to complete.

Backup Your Old iPhone

Before you start setting up your new iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus, you need to back up your old iPhone. Use the guides below to do this. If you already use an iCloud backup, it is likely up to date to the last time you plugged it in.

Once you have a current backup of your iPhone the rest of this process will go much faster. You can do this before you get your iPhone 6s.

Activate Your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus

If you already visited a carrier or chose to use Apple Personal Setup, your iPhone is likely already activated, but if it came in the mail you will need to follow these steps to activate your iPhone.

This is where it can vary from one device to the next, since you may need to call your carrier to activate or you may simply need to switch your SIM card to the new iPhone.

  1. Slide Your Finger Across the Home Screen to start.
  2. Pick your Language
  3. Choose your Country
  4. Connect to WiFi to activate your iPhone faster than using a cellular connection.
  5. Set Up Touch ID by placing your finger on your iPhone.
  6. Create a Passcode.

After a minute or two the iPhone will be activated. You need to complete the iPhone 6s setup before you can make a test call to verify this.

Choose to enable location services or disable them. You can turn this on or off later. We normally choose to enable Location Services so the iPhone can know where we are for enabling apps that rely on location data.

Choose How to Setup Your New iPhone 6s

Next you need to decide how you will set up your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus. There are four options to choose from. Here’s what you need to know.

iPhone 6s Setup Guide - 2

Set Up as a New iPhone – If you want to manually install apps and add media and other items to your iPhone 6s, this is the option to pick. You will start from scratch — which some users like.

Restore from iCloud Backup – If you backed up to iCloud this option will download your accounts, messages, data and apps to the new iPhone 6s. This takes a while to complete, but you can start using your iPhone after about 20 minutes while the rest of the apps download.

Restore from iTunes Backup – If you backed up your iPhone to the computer, this option will let you plug in and restore your old iPhone directly on to your new iPhone 6s. Plan on at least 15 to 30 minutes.

Move from Android – If you are switching from Android, you can use the Move to iOS app to transfer much of your Android data and messages to the iPhone. Here’s how to switch from Android to iPhone.

Final iPhone 6s Setup

After your iPhone restore from backup completes you will still need to go through a short number of additional steps to use your iPhone.

iPhone 6s Setup Guide - 3

  1. Sign in to your Apple ID, and if needed agree to the terms and conditions.
  2. On the next page turn on and setup Apple Pay if you want to use this service.
  3. Next set up Hey Siri. You need to train Siri to your voice for this to work the best.
  4. Enter your account passwords as needed so that you can connect to your accounts.

When you are done, make a test phone call and use your cellular data to make sure that your iPhone is activated and ready to use. If you cannot make a phone call, you may need to call your carrier or switch your SIM card.

Tried restoring new 6S through an iCloud backup from this morning (back-up was with new ios 9). It has failed 3 times so far and just kicks me out after estimating the time remaining. Has anyone else been experiencing similar problems? Maybe iCloud is all bottlenecked…
