4 Reasons Not to Install iOS 9.0.2 & 5 Reasons To Do It

Published

on

Apple’s iOS 9.0.2 update is here and it’s a small upgrade that tackles some big problems. While there are some reasons to consider installing it on your device, there are also some reasons to hold off, for right now at least.

Update: iOS 9.1 has replaced iOS 9.0.2. Here are some reasons to install, and skip, the iOS 9.1 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

In September, Apple’s released four iOS 9 updates. The first, iOS 9.0, was the major upgrade that brought new features and a long list of enhancements to the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. iOS 9.0’s reign as the current iOS update lasted a week.

Apple pushed out iOS 9.0.1, a small bug update that tackled some of the more glaring iOS 9 problems. The update was, at one point, the company’s most current version of iOS. That role has since been filled by a new iOS 9.1 beta, iOS 9.1 beta 5, and a brand new iOS 9.0.2 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

iPhone-6-iOS-8.4-9

While we wait for iOS 9.1, Apple’s rolling out small bug fixers to help improve iOS 9’s performance. iOS 9 problems have been a problem since launch and Apple’s doing its best to permanently fix the problems it failed to catch before the public release.

As we push away from the release, we expect more and more people to discover the iOS 9.0.2 update and its fixes. Not everyone finds updates right at their 10AM PT release time.

While there are some reasons to consider installing right away, there are also some reasons to consider taking a rain check on iOS 9.0.2.

Here, we take a look at a few reasons why you might want to install the iOS 9.0.2 update right now and a few reasons why you might want to hold off for the time being. Keep these in mind as you do your research ahead of an install.

Install iOS 9.0.2 If You're Concerned About Security

Install iOS 9.0.2 If You're Concerned About Security

If you're concerned with your device's security, you might want to install the iOS 9.0.2 update right now because it comes with an important security patch for a well-known passcode flaw that was discovered a few days ago.

Shortly after the iOS 9 release, iOS users discovered a passcode flaw that could allow someone to bypass the lock screen and look at contacts and photos. For some people, that could be a huge problem.

Forutnately, Apple's new iOS 9.0.2 update comes with a patch for the problem and we've been unable to replicate it with the issue on board. If you're concerned with this problem, iOS 9.0.2 might be worth a download.

I had to update to iOS 9.0.2, as my touch screen functions suddenly stopped working, I could call only with Siri. Such a thing never happened to me in none of my apple devices. Feeling very much let down.

Just updated with the latest 9.0.2 update and my touch screen didn’t work, only the home button worked therefore no way of powering down the phone :-/
Then realised if you hold both the home button and the on/off button simultaneously it does perform a soft reset and the phone now works again.

I am using an iPhone 4S that was previously on iOS 8.4.1 which wasn’t too bad. Pretty stable, minimal lag, although apps did take awhile to open. I updated to 9.0.2 last night since reviews were mixed on 9.0.1 for the 4S. Anyway, so far so good. Performance is about the same, perhaps a bit snappier in some areas (e.g. multi-tasking, email client) than 8.4.1. It’s too soon to tell if battery drain is going to rear its ugly head or not. On 8.4.1, my phone could see a day of moderate-to-heavy use off a charge, so hopefully 9.0.2 is at least the same (ideally better).

Updated to 9.0.2 this morning and now experiencing touch screen problems for the first time! There is a 15 second delay between every action…..typing & swiping have become incredibly slow…is this a general problem? Can this be fixed by altering the touch screen settings? Tried a soft reset but to no avail!

Updated to 9.0.2 a week ago and now my phone only rings when it wants to. I don’t have do not disturb on, however, sometimes, when people try to call, my screen lights up with their picture, but no sound comes. And if I answer, I cannot hear or be heard by the caller. Anyone else has this problem?

      • Reinhard

        10/20/2015 at 6:32 am

Daria – I have the same problem with 9.02 iPhone 6. tone and vibration works only when the phone is in use, otherwise it is sleeping deep … It’s for calls, SMS, WhatsApp, emails, …
Fon is useless at the moment, bc you have to be proactive (keep it in use)

On an iPhone 5S. Updated to 9.0.2 and I’ve noticed animations complete faster and are no longer stuttering as badly as they were before on iOS 9 and 9.0.1. The OS feels smoother overall. To make I note I never do an update over the air. I always connect to iTunes and do a full update that way. I find it gives me the least problems and less chance of bugs rearing their head.

Go to settings and turn off your wifi assist. If you use wifi and it doesn’t have a high speed your wifi assists kicks in and uses your data with wifi therefore charges you more! I noticed the same!

9.0.1 upgrade seems to have caused problems projecting what is displayed on my screen. I’m using the Same Apple VGA to lightening adapter and the same projector. Photos often don’t project at all and only parts of some screens project. Is anyone else aware of this problem?

    • iPad Instructor

      11/03/2015 at 2:53 pm

Yes. I use my iPads to teach. As soon as I upgraded to IOS 9 the display on the projector became intermittent on all my iPad models. Sometimes the screen just blanks out, and then I have to reboot the iPad until it displays again. Many of the photos options no longer mirror. This happens with both my HDMI adapter and my VGA adapter.

I downloaded ios 9.0.2 a few days ago and found flaws. I cannot open the App Store so I’m not able to download any new apps. Another would be that whenever I search for an app in the spotlight search box, the app doesn’t show up so I have to manually look for the app on my phone. Lastly, their so-called “fix” on the iMessage activation, it’s still not working for me. My iMessage still isn’t activated/verified. Hope they “fix” this.

Its sounds a lot to me like Apple doesn’t have a clue. “An unlock screen exploit to get to contacts and pictures” for god sake. LOL. I have an iPhone. It will be my last. I would say the tenth reason not listed above is “Don’t upgrade if you plan to move to an Andriod phone”

I have used Apple products since 1980’s with the Apple II+. Apples drive and intelligent died with Jobs. Wozniak can not do what Job’s did. He’s not a tough enough butt kicker to lead the Apple vision and squash the stupid ideas that rise out of the silicon valley like the rest of the nation needs them. Cook…. humph… The beginning of a totally lost company like Microsoft.

Never take an even numbered update people. Let the mega companies that hire only Ivy League students shape the future fore the rest of us to debug for them.

This gave me such a chuckle to read.

    Thanks Adam for writing it!

Hi Lauren, I got that too. Go to wifi settings, forget the network you are on then rejoin it.. then turn your phone off and back on. It sorted mine out. Good luck

Noticing that since an update to 9.0.2, all my iMessages are being sent to recipients PLUS me. Additionally, when telling Siri to send a message to someone, that person’s name will show on the text, but it will go to a different recipient. Has anyone experienced this?

Big mistake installing IOS 9 (any version)
Using IPhone 4S, everything run Ok (yes, with some delay on Apps), but sync music was ok as any version before. What you choose you have on the phone. Now, it runs only partially, choose by Apple under an unknown criteria.
I want my freedom to chose restored. I want my music back!
Apple! correct this features on next versions as fast as you can!!!!

    This 9.0.2 is Bizarre….
    Experience Lags, Studders,
Keyboard Freeze ups, need to RESTART iPad Air I CONSTANTLY.

BUT, The most taken for granted Necessary Functions, I cannot get the Swipe Up Controls to Appear, unless I am in the Control Panel.
INABILITY to “Swipe Up” & Control Volume, Screen Brightness, driving me nuts….

Anyone have this problem, or maybe an idea of what the Deal is ?

Downloaded 9.0.2 on my i6 and now my signal strength is low, one bar in my office were as was 4 before, my i5s is still 4 bars as I did not upgrade it, as well my finger touch will not work now so have to use pass code to open it, the camera will not work in Pano mode, wondering what I will find next.

Never had a problem with my iPhones in all the years I have had them from day one, until this iPhone 6, these are not the only problems I have had with it, I brought in Australia 12 months ago and as I work in UAE I could not get it fixed under warranty and have had to replace the wifi aerial and face censer, cost about $250 US, now this.

Will have to wait for 9.1 and if it does not correct problems I think it about time to change to another brand.

  28. No hope for you

    Hi All,

I just downloaded iOS 9.0.2 but when I want to install it give error “An error occurred installing iOS 9.0.2”.

I bought phone in South Africa 12 months ago, screen got damaged and had to replace whilst working in Zambia.
I am pretty sure this is not original apple screen as my touch ID is not working anymore, but can this also be the reason for software updates not working anymore?

Any assistance would be highly appreciated?

    Cheers

I replaced my screen as it was cracked, and touch-screen was patchy. It’s still happening.

I updated my iOS four days ago and haven’t been able to get onto any of my app. There is a delay in my keyboard typing. And my Game Center won’t load. My iPad is a paper weight. I can’t hear any sound playing my music but I can listen to my ring tones. Also I don’t hear anything from the receiver so I have to take on speaker. My battery barely charged last night it was stuck at 40% for majority of the night on the charger. This morning it finally decided to charge. On my screen the message “This cable does not support this device” keeps popping up. So now I have to go into the apple store for them to take a look.

Installed 9.0.2 a couple of days ago. Screen now freezes frequently although can get back to it through a reset although this is annoying and time consuming. Copy and paste function no longer works (freezes), and I can no longer play music or recharge my iPad or iPhone any longer through my USB port on my iHome. Also cannot go back to my previous operating systems.

After upgrading to 9.0.2 on my iPhone4s, the phone has become super fast. Seems like the apps which you use the most will respond perfectly. For 4s users, enable the Reduce Motion and notice the difference in the app launching performance. Im just loving my iPhone4s with this upgrade. Feels like no need to upgrade my iPhone until next iOS release :P

Used to be able to hold a link until a window pops up and select “open in a new window”.
And it would do just that.
But post 9.0.2 you get the new window AND follow the link in the current window, so you then have to back up in the current window.
Someone needs an automated tester for their apps, so they can regression test before release.

I’ve just upgraded to 9.0.2 and am now trouble with it, suddenly my phone (5S) shows the apple for around 40 seconds and suddenly it shows a blue screen for 1 sec. Already connected it to my pc and pressed both home and power buttons at the same time until the itunes logo appears and then resynched with itunes and for the first time everything appeared to be resolved, today i was surprised by the blue screen again, i’m just restarting the synch with itunes all over again, what a nightmare … :-(

This is worst update IOS has ever had.. I live on the Michigan/ Canadian border. I have Verizon and never had a problem with service. Since the 9.2 update my iPhone 6 now picks up Canadian phone towers and drops my calls. I’m not receiving calls or texts. Verizon tells me there is nothing I can do, other than wait for the next update on IOS. I’m pretty sure I will never purchase an iPhone again.

Ios 9 app switcher has home desktop to the right and last open window was from left to rightjustlik before . But in 9.0.2 they seem have made it ala arabic home desktop is to the right and opened apps is from right to left. So annoying, also windows overlap so its harder to check something and go back. I have upgraded my iPad mini to 9.0.2 and everything is fine except it will no longer charge from my pc usb3 ports. It used to charge from these and usb2 before the update. The charging cord is fine and works with an Apple charger (borrowed) or in car charger. Problem is I have lost my original charger and charging from pc was very handy.

I have noticed a decrease in battery life by 10%! After charging my iPhone to 100% before bed & woke up noticing it was at 80%. This is bull because before I used to be able to charge my iPhone to 100% and wake up the next day with 95% or more remaining. And the new update was supposed to help improve battery life. I also noticed a significant drain from regular use compared to before I updated. I hope Apple realises they screwed up trying to improve battery life and actually improve battery life in the next update or I’m not updating anymore.

My Ipad now freezes for 2-4 minutes since the update. It is slower to respond. It constantly looses connection to wifi. I never had these problems before. Incredibly frustrating to constantly ‘renew lease’ just to gain 20 seconds worth of watching video afterwards and then stuck again with the same issues. The same issues with my iPhone 5c. Sound on my Facebook videos has disappeared, and yes, it can be fixed manually but why should I fine-tune something after an uodate? My ipad is now worth the functionality of a paperweight. I really love Apple products, but this latest update causes me functionality issues and I truly hope this will be resolved soon as I am reliant on efficiency and productivity…

Upgraded to 9.2 this afternoon and I’m no longer able to receive phone calls or texts on my IPhone 5s. All my text messages have disappeared and battery drained super fast even though the phone wasn’t used all day. I’m sick of issues with my IPhone and am considering leaving Apple behind.

After i updated to ios 9.0.2 my phone is frequently being stuck. Itz frequently hanging and my touch screen dosent function. I have to restart for its working and many of my apps get stuck in between and have to close and restart them. Even some times the screen goes blank. The on-off button of mobile data is taking pretty much delay for functioning. Its a hard job to handle ios 9.0.2 as it requiers pretty much patience. I kindly request you to fix these bugs in the next update as soon as possible and help me.

All I can say are that all the software WRITERS need to be fired! Time to hire ppl who know what they are doing. Apple has the best hardware but with their awful software they are killing their good name. iTunes totally unused friendly. This last IOS update, the worse EVER!!!!! Come on this is APPLE, what is going on? Very slow sluggish, half of the stuff doesn’t work correctly. It freezes. Battery drains very fast. How can there be SO MANY SCREW UPS AT ONCE?

Thought I’d just add this.. My ipad mini has been the guinea pig for all of these updates, and I’ve just given it the 9.0.2 upgrade… How slow and crappy does my ipad run now??? Apple is really failing their customers in a huge way… With every absolutely crap upgrade they also drag you into an ever bigger pile of problems that they won’t allow you to escape by not signing older versions… It just makes me wonder why ppl are so faithful to the brand

I am not finding this shit funny at all. I I just got the iPhone and swung to the new app, now my screen won’t touch, I initially touch my phone was faulty and took it back to the agent, what none sense is this. Screw won’t touch, sluggish and heated hardwares Apple can close shop if this shit cannot be resolved within minutes…..

Don’t know what to do right now

I agree with what Tim has to say. I use Apple and pay top dollar because it’s reliable (or at least it was while Jobs was around).

It seems that Apple has gone back to the days where there were too many products and not enough quality.

I don’t buy Apple because Apple products are pretty. I buy Apple because it works. If I wanted to stuff around debugging, I’d buy a Samsung and a PC and save myself some money.

I’m sick of having to do my homework before deciding whether to update IOS or not.

Time for Apple’s leaders to go back to the drawing board and while they’re there, they should consider what the company stands for, because right now, it’s not reliability.

iPhone 5 upgrade from iOS 8.3 to 9.2 has caused major problems searching for contacts.

What happens is the contacts app tries to predict after three letters what you want to search for – if you’ve made a mistake, tough luck!

You still have to wait for the machine to search through all your contacts — in my case thousands – before it comes back allowing you access to the keyboard no less the app in your phone

Attempts to search beyond 3 letters results in locking up the phone *********** you have to wait five or 10 seconds before it recovers, in order to erace any wrong letters then try to correct the typing in between lock ups – very FRUSTRATING !

After upgrading to 9.0.2 some apps – particarly used for automation – are responding only via external access – from inside a wifi net I can’t execute commands. Generally connection to any wifi frequently breaks.

Yes I too is having trouble with the latest 9. updates. 9.01 was difficult. I was told to change wifi networks. I did and finality the 9.0.1 update went through. Then a within 3 weeks 9.0.2 came and I uploaded that. It seemed to go ok. But then I had 23 applications to update. I said to update all 23 and thought within a half hour they be done. The next day checked and I had black boxes covering all 23 updates. I pushed and changed wifi networks. Thought maybe I had too many apps so I deleted a few figuring that might speed up the pace. Make the long story short finally the app updated but now No safari or e-mail that goes. I can play off line games but no e-mail or safari for me. I am stuck with just off line applications.

I have never had a problem with my iPad lighting until I upgraded to the 9.0; since then I have all sort of problems and today it wiould not start at all no matter what I tried. Unfortunately, I will need to take it to the Apple Store and hopefully they will be able to get it started again. I have been purchasing Apple products for many years; but maybe this is the end of there good products.

This update/bug fix has loaded my phone with apps that I do not want. Most notably the creepy stalker app Find Friends. I know who my friends are and where to find them. I do not need Apple to help with that, thank you very much. Subsequently, the download has attached apps that I don’t want that are taking up precious space on my phone and now it’s very slow.

I downloaded the 9.2 update on my iPhone 6 but I soon realised I was not getting any calls or messages and no missed call notifications. Friends were telling me when they rang me it went straight to the answer phone and text’s didn’t come through. Put the question in Google and loads of people were having the same problem tried the wife’s sim in my phone and when I called her No it went straight to the answer machine and the phone didn’t ring at all and there was no notification to say a call had been missed. I then tried my sim in her phone she hadn’t done the update rang my No ind it rang straight away so that proved it was the update had done something to the phone. I sorted this by downloading the 9.1 update and restored my phone to that tried calling it and it rang straight away. So lesson learnt don’t download new update till they sort it out 1st. So if I were you I would not do the update just yet wait until they fix the new bugs they have created. Does make you wonder though do these techs not check these updates before they put them out for use ???
