New Trailer Teases Halo 5 Release

Microsoft, makers of the Xbox One entertainment console, isn’t letting up on promotional material ahead of the Halo 5 release date. The company has another Halo 5 trailer ready for owners of it’s Xbox One entertainment console, and it appears that everyone’s greatest fears are true, Master Chief John 117 is dead, but that depends on who you ask.

The new Halo 5 release trailer leaked this past Saturday, just a day before Microsoft planned to air it on prime time television to build hype ahead of the game’s release. Halo 5: Guardians arrives on store shelves on October 27th. Microsoft has a limited edition console bundle coming with the game for $499.99. There are disc and digital versions of the game coming on October 27th. Unfortunately for Xbox 360 users, the game won’t be coming to Microsoft’s older gaming console.

Here's what you need to know about Halo 5.

This new trailer isn’t set within the Xbox One game at all, but within the Halo universe. It’s a live-action trailer, continuing a long history of videos with real people and real locations being used to drive the Halo stories home.

The trailer begins with John 117 running along a barren landscape. The ground cracks and crumbles beneath him. In the distance is a city. The video immediately cuts to Agent — now Spartan — Jameson Locke and his operations team gliding toward that same planet on a transport ship. Back on the planet’s surface John is running along crumbling buildings; a voice over mentions that he has an “unimpeachable” record.

It’s at this point that we get a bit of crucial back story. According to the voice, the Master Chief is no-longer taking orders from his commanding officers at UNSC headquarters. Further more, it’s believed that john is setting “things” off on remote worlds. “We created him so we’re responsible if we can’t control him.” Next we see the rest of Blue Team following John into combat.

“The only thing worse than losing a hero is watching him turn against us,” the voice over says as a massive complex of buildings all fall apart on-screen. Officially, the UNSC is telling citizens that the Master Chief is dead, having been killed in action. Apparently, Fireteam Osiris and Spartan Locke are “the unofficial story.” It’s their job to make the John 117’s death a reality.

We already knew that the Master Chief is officially dead. At least, a previous live action trailer revealed that a few weeks ago. This new trailer confirms what many suspected. The UNSC is lying about the Master Chief being dead. Their motivations are up for debate, but the promotional material is clear: Halo 5 Guardians will take players deeper into the mindset of the UNSC after it won the war with the Covenant.

For Halo 5: Guardians, developer 343 Industries has unveiled a host of new features and material. To hype players up for the Halo 5 release date the developer and Microsoft has a series of podcasts setting the stage for the game’s story. The second season of that Hunt the Truth podcast started this month.

In Halo 5: Guardians players will take on the role of either Locke or John 117. They’ll command a team of three other Spartans or be allowed to play the entire story with up to three friends. Halo 5 dumps Spartan Ops from Halo 4 and Firefight from Halo Reach in favor of Warzone, a massive multiplayer battle mode with up to 12 players on each team and an alien army battling both teams for control of crucial areas. The game will still include a traditional multiplayer mode.

Microsoft is hoping that Halo 5 can boost sales of the Xbox One ahead of the PS4 this holiday shopping season. It’s one of two big-name games only coming to the Xbox One this holiday. The other is Rise of the Tomb Raider.
