Rumors of Microsoft introducing a new Surface Pro 4 with upgrades to battery life and its keyboard were true. At an event this morning the company revealed the Surface Pro 4 and provided all the details users need to know ahead of the Surface Pro 4 release date.

Announced this morning in New York City, the Surface Pro 4 is an evolution of the Surface Pro 3 that Microsoft released last year. Microsoft has kept most of the core experience intact, with the same aluminum body and physical footprint as last year’s device.

The Surface Pro 4’s display is bigger and crisper than it has even been. Microsoft says this new 12.3-inch display has 267 pixels-per-square inch, more than any other Surface Pro. Upgraded front-facing speakers compliment the upgraded display. To fit the 12.3-inch display into the same dimensions as its predecessor, Microsoft opted shrunk the bezel around that display. All that being said, the Surface Pro 4 is thinner than the Surface Pro 3, measuring 8.4mm thick from top to bottom. Microsoft is keeping the same rigid magnesium frame.

What’s available inside and the changes in accessories are the things worth taking notice with this release.. There’ll be configurations of the Surface Pro 4 that have as much as 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. Microsoft hasn’t clarified the configurations that it’ll offer and how much it’ll cost.

The story of the Surface is synonymous with accessories. Microsoft counts on users wanting to purchase add-ons to enhance their experience.

On stage, Microsoft Devices leader Panos Panay noted that 50% of Surface users interact with the device using their Surface Pen. It’s to help these users out that Microsoft finally made it easier to store the Surface Pen without unsightly extra accessories. Magnets on the side of the Surface Pro 4 lock the upgraded Surface Pen in place.

The Surface Pen itself has gotten a huge upgrade. It now comes in five different colors and is capable of tracking 1,024 different pressure levels. There’s still a button on the top of the Surface Pen, but it now doubles as a way to erase drawings and trigger the Cortana Personal assistant.

A thinner lighter Surface Pro keyboard features curved key caps that are backlit. Microsoft has supersized the Surface Pro Keyboard’s trackpad, making it 40% larger than the trackpad in last year’s model. A finger print reader lets users login to the Surface Pro 4’s Windows 10 operating system without putting in their password. This cover will also come in five colors, matching the upgraded Surface Pens. Anyone with a Surface Pro 3 can purchase the upgraded Surface Pro Cover to login using Windows Hello.

All told, Surface Pro 4 looks like a pretty reasonable upgraded from the Surface Pro 3. Users who already own a Surface Pro 3 should probably consider upgrading for the performance boosts. Inside are new Intel 6th Generation Core processors that perform 30 percent faster than the stuff inside the Surface Pro 3. Microsoft also took a swipe at Apple’s MacBook Air, saying that this new Surface Pro 4 is “50% faster than the MacBook Air.” Be forewarned those upgrades come at a cost the Surface Pro 4 will start at $899. That’s $100 more than the Surface Pro 3.

Microsoft says the Surface Pro 4 release date is October 26th. The company will begin taking pre-orders of the Surface Pro 4 tomorrow on its website. Presumably, we’ll learn more about the different configurations then.

GottaBeMobile will have more information bout the Surface Pro 4, the Surface Pro 4 release date, and a hands-on this week.
