This morning Google finally announced and made official its new smartphones, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. After months of rumors and a week full of leaks we knew everything about them already, but now that Google’s confirmed it all, here are all the official details about the release date, pricing, availability, colors and more for the Nexus 5X.

As expected, today Google announced a successor to the original Nexus 5 from 2013, and the Nexus 6 that was released last year. The company is about a month earlier than most expected, as all previous Nexus phones have been announced and released in October and November.

The LG made Nexus 5X and Huawei branded Nexus 6P are both official and coming to shelves soon, although unlike last year they won’t be sold by carriers. Starting today, September 29th, both phones are available for pre-order at the Google Store.

As expected, the new Nexus 5X comes equipped with a a number of exciting features like dual front-facing speakers, a fingerprint scanner for better security and Android Pay, a 5.2-inch 1080p HD display, 6-core processor with 2GB of RAM, and only 16 or 32GB of storage. It does however have a much improved 12.3 megapixel rear camera, 5 megapixel front camera, a 2,700 mAh battery, and a reversible USB Type-C port with quick charging.

The Nexus 5x release date and pricing has been confirmed, along with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and everything mentioned above. With the Nexus 5X release date and pre-orders confirmed, we want to breakdown the important details that prospective buyers need to keep in mind as the release nears.

Pre-Order

Just as all the rumors suggested, Google will open up pre-orders for the new Nexus 5X starting today, September 29th. Pre-orders are going to be live in the United States, UK, Korea, Japan, and Ireland. Oddly enough missing from the pre-order details and announcements was anything related to Canada, but we can expect more on that soon.

Nexus-pricing

The new Nexus 5X was built with the same idea as the original Nexus 5, that being a well-rounded do-it-all smartphone for an aggressive and wallet-friendly price. As a result it will be very affordable.

  • 16GB Nexus 5X will be just $379
  • 32GB Nexus 5X will be $429

There will be three colors available: Black, White, and Mint Blue. Many aren’t too excited about the base model being 16GB, but it’s very affordable. Not to mention the bigger 32GB option is it cheaper than the 32GB Moto X Pure Edition, which is another excellent phone on many buyers radar.

Release Date

As we mentioned above, the Nexus 5X and 6P will be up for pre-order today, but so far we don’t have solid details about the release date. A few small hints and leaks have suggested October 9th, which would be extremely impressive, but typically Nexus devices take 2-3 weeks from announcement, to release date. Today Google said, “later in October”.

As soon as we have more details about the actual release date, which the Nexus 5X and 6P will be available to buy and start shipping, we’ll add more details.

Carriers

Where is the Verizon Nexus 5X? This is a question we’ve received over and over again. Last year the Nexus 6 was the first Nexus to be readily available on all carriers in the United States. That said, carriers had some control, release dates were staggered, and Verizon took far too long to deliver the phone, or allow them to be registered on its network.

This year Google took complete control. The Nexus 5X will not be sold in carrier stores. It will be available exclusively online from the Google Store, Amazon, Bestbuy.com and other locations.

However, the Nexus 5X and 6P will both work with all carriers in the United States. We’ve confirmed Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, US Cellular, and even smaller regional carriers. The new Nexus phones for 2015 support all major bands for all carriers. This includes Project Fi, for those interested.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Of course the new Nexus 5X is running the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow software update. With new animations, an improved lockscreen, homescreen, application tray and notification pulldown bar. Nexus Imprint for improved security, Android Pay, and even up to 30% improved battery life with Doze. Finally, Google Now on Tap, another awesome new feature, which we’ll talk more about later, but was also mentioned back at Google I/O.

Today Google announced that Android 6.0 Marshmallow will start rolling out to current Nexus devices next week, likely on Monday as rumors suggested, and be available out of the box on the new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P.

This news has just been announced live on stage by Google, and we’ll update as more information arrives.
