A new Star Trek TV series is coming to CBS in 2017 according to a new report that claims the new Star Trek Series will début under the direction of Alex Kutzman and it will go where no Star Trek TV show went before it — streaming direct to your iPhone, iPad, Android, Apple TV and computer on day one — even if you don’t have cable.

Here’s what you need to know about the new Star Trek TV series. This is unofficial for the time being, but after a leak this size we expect to hear something more from CBS in the near future.

The new Star Trek TV show will arrive after Star Trek Beyond hits theaters next year, but before a fourth film in the latest run of Star Trek movies arrives.

The Hollywood Reporter leaks a full outline of what to expect from the new Star Trek TV series, and reports that we will see an official announcement from CBS by the end of the day.

Update: CBS confirms the new Star Trek series.

Part of the New Star Trek TV series’ appeal is that Alex Kurtzman is supposedly signed on to the project. Kurtzman, who wrote the 2009 Star Trek movie and Star Trek Into Darkness, will produce the new Stat Trek series according to the leak.

The New Star Trek TV show release date will be in January 2017 on CBS according to the report. That means there is a little over a year and a half until the new Star Trek series airs on CBS.

New Star Trek TV Series Story and Setting

We don’t know much about the setting of the New Star Trek TV show yet, but The Hollywood Reporter shares the following synopsis of the series,

“The new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.”

This type of setting allows for a range of interactions between the crew and other civilizations and it will be interesting to see Star Trek tackle societal issues. In Plato’s Stepchildren Willliam Shatner and Nichelle Nichols kiss, in one of the earliest interracial kisses between a white man and a black woman on television, which caused concern for NBC in 1968.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this report is that while the premiere will be on the CBS network, this series is reportedly being shot with CBS All Access in mind.

The premiere of the new Star Trek TV show and the later episodes will go direct to CBS All Access.
