In fact, HTC promised the HTC One M9 and M8 update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow would start before the end of the year. Meaning sometime in late December. Now with a new update to Android 6.0.1 rolling out, users are wondering what update is coming, and we have all the answers below.

At the end of September HTC confirmed Marshmallow was coming to many of its smartphones soon, and have repeatedly updated users with good news, stating that it will likely arrive in late December, and early January for most owners.

Then a few weeks ago the Google Play Edition HTC One M8 received Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and the company confirmed regular users internationally, and in the US, are still on track to receive it around the end of December, and many carriers like T-Mobile and Sprint will see Android 6.0 Marshmallow for the HTC One M9 during the first week of January. We’re hearing the 4th for Sprint, 6th for T-Mobile, and late December for the Verizon HTC One M9.

Today though, we received even better news. While carrier versions of the HTC One M8 and One M9 are still likely going to get Android 6.0 first, then later see an update to Android 6.0.1, HTC confirmed two devices will get the latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow released this week, before the end of December.

Shown above is HTC president Mo Versi posting to Twitter, confirming that Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow for both the HTC One M9 (unlocked) and the new HTC One A9 (all variants) are on track to receive the over-the-air software update to Android 6.0.1 before the end of the month.

That means all HTC One A9 owners in the United States, and all unlocked or developer edition HTC One M9 smartphone owners. This is Android 6.0.1, and will have everything that’s new in Android 6.0 as well. Meaning tons of visual changes, security enhancements, Doze battery life improvements, over 200 new emoji characters and much more. Below is a small comparison of what’s new in Android 6.0, and even more will be in Android 6.0.1 when it arrives later this month.

It’s worth noting that HTC promised consumers that the HTC One A9 will be updated to each new version of Android within 15 days of Google releasing it the the public. That was a bold claim, which had many users buying the impressive new mid-range HTC One A9.

If that promise is met, the HTC One A9 should get Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow before or on Wednesday, December 23rd. That could also be the same day we see it arrive for the HTC One M9, but we’ll have to wait and see. All said and done, the update should be here soon for many users, and hit all HTC One M8, M9, and A9 users in December and January. Stay tuned for more details for HTC devices, and we’re still left in the dark waiting for LG, Samsung and others to make announcements.

Hoping you are right, of course, but the way I read MO’s tweet is: Marshmallow for M9, and 6.0.1 for A9. I take that to mean the M9 is slated to receive the 6.0 release they have been working on, while the A9 will be getting the latest version.

I have a question, I imported the HTC One m9+ supreme camera edition (unlocked), since I am in the united states and my phone is from Taiwan, would I receive updates regarding the android OS? I choose t-mobile as my carrier.

Still upset that as an early adopter – I preordered the M7 – I’m being shut out of the Marshmallow update. I’ve loved the phone, until now…

January first and still no Marshmallow for my Sprint HTC one M8. So much for a guarantee. They have missed the deadlines two times now.
