iOS 9.2 Jailbreak Release May Not Come Anytime Soon

Published

on

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a new jailbreak release since the initial iOS 9 jailbreak back in October, and it’s possible we won’t see a new jailbreak release for a while.

About a month after iOS 9 released, Pangu released an iOS 9 jailbreak that worked with iOS 9.0, iOS 9.0.1, and iOS 9.0.2. Since then, Apple has released iOS 9.1 and iOS 9.2, which patched up the jailbreak and we have yet to see a new jailbreak release that works with the latest version of iOS.

It’s been rumored in the recent past that Pangu had a working iOS 9.2 jailbreak ready to go, which was believed to be released fairly soon, but we have yet to see it release.

Now, Apple has released the first beta to iOS 9.2.1, which means that another version of iOS will soon be released, but when will we see a new jailbreak?

Well, it’s possible that we won’t see an iOS 9.2 jailbreak for a little while longer, and we could easily get into 2016 without seeing an iOS 9.2 jailbreak, simply because of Apple’s release cycle of iOS updates.

Theoretically, if an iOS 9.2 jailbreak has been discovered and is ready to go, then it should be released right now if Apple patched up exploits in the iOS 9.2.1 beta. However, if the beta doesn’t patch up anything new, then it’s likely that we won’t see a new jailbreak for a while longer.

iOS-8-Cydia

This is sort of what happened with iOS 9.1. Pangu went ahead and released its iOS 9 jailbreak once it discovered that one of the iOS 9.1 betas patched up exploits used in the jailbreak, which that it would be better for Pangu to go ahead and release the jailbreak instead of holding it back and trying to find a new exploit in iOS 9.1 at the time.

It’s likely that iOS 9.2.1 is a critical fix update that doesn’t bring any new features to the table, but rather includes a handful of bug fixes and security fixes that Apple could have queued up just in case Pangu does release the iOS 9.2 jailbreak soon. The possibility of that actually being the case is fairly low, but it seems like that was the case with the release of iOS 8.4.1, which released shortly after an iOS 8.4 jailbreak was released earlier this year.

In any case, jailbreaking developers who are working on new exploits rarely share their progress, so it’s sort of like Schrodinger’s Cat: You can either look at it as an iOS 9.2 jailbreak existing or not existing at the moment, but you won’t know until Pangu opens up the box and releases it to the public.

If you’re waiting on an iOS 9.2 jailbreak, make sure that you don’t update to iOS 9.2 right now, as you’ll lose your current jailbreak.

However, you can at least prepare for the jailbreak and download iOS 9.2 right now, that way you won’t have to wait for the update to download. You can do this either in iTunes by clicking “Download only” when the update prompt appears (you’ll have to plug in your iPhone to get the pop-up), or you can head to this website and download the iOS 9.2 update file separately.

It’s also a good idea to back up your device through iTunes, since you’ll need to do that anyway when you jailbreak your device.

In the end, no one is quite sure when the iOS 9.2 jailbreak will arrive, but it might not be anytime soon, so don’t keep your fingers crossed for too much longer.

this is getting really annoying. I am stuck on ios 9.1 so that I can jailbreak if they release a 9.1 jailbreak first and now everyone is saying we might have to wait longer. word of advise..you have a lot of unhappy iPhone users patiently waiting to jailbreak their brand new phones and you keep telling us we have to wait even though there has been rumors saying that a jailbreak exsists for 9.2 they just are not releasing it. lets get going here with the new jailbreaks so I can stop waking up disappointed everyday!

Wow these people do this for free and release as soon as it is ready, shown some gratitude. Why do people think they are entitled to everything right now when they want it.

Props on the Schrodinger’s Cat reference but just a side note:

“You can either look at it as an iOS 9.2 jailbreak existing or not existing at the moment”

While you are correct about the observation of the outcome, It’s not “either or”, it’s both states existing at the same time, until the next quantum state is observed – the crux of Quantum superposition. More correctly: “You can look at it as the iOS 9.2 Jailbreak both existing AND not existing at the same moment….[rest of sentence correct]”.

Your well thought out, well researched article, tells me that might be something you’d appreciate being pointed out. If not, I apologize for the tangent. Enjoyed your article.

IMHO opinion JB 9.2 will NOT come anytime soon
Apple closed security holes with new IOS and now they have already update in beta stage so it is not too far for next update to even make more difficult for ” teams ” to make JB working
    They are already struggling

I’m seriously considering moving back to Android because of this crap. No fault of the jailbreakers but Apple’s stranglehold on modders is beyond ridiculous! I’m paying you $1,000.00 for a device and you’re telling me that I can’t use it the way I wish to because you want to “keep me safe”? Screw that! I’m an adult and I can make my own decisions! You already void my warranty if I jailbreak anyway so why not just allow me do so, void my warranty, and if I’m “unsafe” it’s my problem. Foolishness!!!

It’s quiet complicated. Apple Needs to Protect ALL their developers and contracts. Meaning to prevent Pirating and Hax on any APP(s).
Modifying stuff like OS cosmetics are totally fine, speeding up or minimalistic are totally okay.
All Apple are doing to avoid JB / ROOT are to avoid Pirating/Hax.

Ask yourself, if you made a app cost $10 or Free+IAP. Do you want users to install Pirated paid app which you gain $0 income or hack your Free+IAP again no income to Developers.

      Think about It!

I’m completely agree with you Fenton and that was what i thought of. We can’t do whatever we want to coz we were telling it’s not safe while other products are widely open. I’m just wondering that the other products like Samsung, LG, Asus, NEC, Phillips etc., are way not safe using them coz they allow you do to whatever you want.

Well, serously, now I’m thinking of switching to Samsung which is cheaper and i can freely and faster download any software from playstore.

    Keep safe iphone. Good luck!

Well if theres not a update by 2016. I might just be going back to Android like maybe the nexus. I am new to the iphone scene but recently discovered I can’t really live with limited elements of the OS that apple is use to providing to users that have vary limited knowledge to software modifications. Right now I hate my Iphone because its so limited its like an elementary OS to someone who is new to smart phones. Yes I shouldn’t of upgraded to 9.2 but I tried the recovery option in Itunes to restore my 9.0.2 firmware image. But it wouldn’t install because of the stupid Itunes verification from Apples servers. And guest what Itunes did yup you guest it wiped the 9.0.2 OS off the phone I couldn’t retrieve my .shsh blob file from my device and I was forced to upgrade the device I wished I would of backed them up but I didn’t know I could.
