Published

on

The iOS 9.2 release for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch is here and it brings new features and a laundry list of bug fixes for iOS 9 problems. Before you download it on your iPhone, iPad or iPod, you’ll want to make sure you and your device are prepared. These tips will help.

Apple pushed the iOS 9.2 update into beta a week after it released its first major update for the iOS 9 operating system. The iOS 9.2 update appeared to be much smaller than the iOS 9.1 update though the official release proves otherwise.

In December, after a lengthy stint in beta, Apple released the iOS 9.2 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The update delivers security fixes, new features and a long list of bug fixes that should help to stabilize the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch during the holiday season.

Install iOS 9.2 - 1

The iOS 9.2 update replaces iOS 9.1 and it will be a tempting upgrade for those looking to add Arabic support to Siri and fix lingering iOS 9 bugs and problems found on iOS 9.0 and the iOS 9.1 update from October.

It’s a tempting update but you must remember that there’s also a potential for problems. Apple’s iOS updates, particularly milestone upgrades like iOS 9.2, can hurt performance and cause headaches. That’s why we recommend doing some prep work before you install iOS 9.2 on your device.

If this is your first major iOS update or you just want to play it safe with iOS 9.2, follow these pre-installation tips. They’ll help you get you, and your device, ready for the jump to the iOS 9.2 update and and its changes.

Step 1: Get Familiar with iOS 9.2 & Its Changes

Step 1: Get Familiar with iOS 9.2 & Its Changes

You can follow all of these steps or some of them. Either way, we think they're going to help you prepare for Apple's iOS 9.2 update. These are the steps we take when Apple releases new iOS upgrades and we typically come out of the release without any major problems.

The first thing you'll want to do before installing iOS 9.2 is to get familiar with its changes. You can do this by reading the change log that appears in Settings.

This update is much bigger than your standard update so you'll want to get familiar with the differences between it and the other versions of iOS 9 so that you're comfortable before you install.

If you're making the jump from iOS 8 or older to iOS 9, you'll want to get familiar with the differences between whatever you're on and iOS 9.

To get started with that, you'll want to take a look at our iOS 9.1 vs. iOS 9 comparison. Take a look at our iOS 9 vs. iOS 8 walkthrough if you're coming from something older than iOS 9.

I updated my 4s yesterday and it is a massive drain on my new battery. I could go for days with 9.1 on the new Apple battery. Now it will drain in a matter of hours. I have turned off everything I can think of including location services and background refresh. What is going on?

I am still on iOS 9.1 on my Air 1 and I’ve never received a popup about upgrading to iOS 9.2 so far. I checked Settings and it said iOS 9.2 is available, and I pressed Install, but at the last minute, I changed my mind and cancelled the upgrade on my iPad, so it just stayed on iOS 9.

I want to tell you how much I appreciate the detail you go through in posting your reviews. It enables the person at the lowest common denominator to work through getting tech savvy on their own, so that they can gain the expertise they need without flaunting a dunce cap in front of the world.
Anyone can skim to the level they need to address. So many assumptions are made that one is already in the know. You guys do a great job of getting this wanna-be and will-be-tech-savvy-mom to the point where my teen no longer looks at me like the proverbial village idiot when I ask something about this topic. Kudos, you all!
