iOS 9: 5 Things to Expect in 2016

Nothing is confirmed but rumors point to the arrival of an iOS 9.3 update later this year.

The catalyst for these rumors is a recent report from 9to5Mac. The site's Benjamin Mayo suggests that the rumored iPhone 6C, one of the supposed stars of this March event, is "expected to run iOS 9.3." Details about the update itself are scarce.

While nothing is confirmed, this makes sense. Apple's shifted from a release protocol that called for one big milestone update per release cycle to one that calls for multiple milestone releases during an iOS update's lifespan.

Last year, Apple released iOS 8.1, iOS 8.2, iOS 8.3, and iOS 8.4 with a few updates in between. The company appears to be on track to do the same in 2016. For reference, iOS 8.3 was released in the first half of the year on April 8th.

If Apple is planning an iOS 9.3 update, and at this point it appears that it is, we'd expect it to deliver an iOS 9.3 beta to developers and the public. Apple's gotten into the habit of releasing betas immediately after a new public release so we wouldn't be surprised if one showed up around the iOS 9.2.1 release date.
