11 Things to Know About the iPhone 5 iOS 9.2 Update

Published

on

Apple recently pushed out its iPhone 5 iOS 9.2 update bringing fixes, enhancements and new problems to the former flagship. Now that we’re a few weeks removed from the release, we want to take a look at the important things to know about the iPhone 5 iOS 9.2 update and its future.

Apple confirmed the iPhone 5 iOS 9.2 update with a beta a week after the iOS 9.1 release. And like the iOS 9.1 update, the iOS 9.2 arrived (in beta) with new features and fixes for iOS 9 problems.

In the weeks that followed the initial beta, Apple improved the iOS 9.2 update with new features and tweaks. Earlier this month, after several beta releases, Apple deemed the iOS 9.2 good enough for public consumption.

In December, the company pulled it out of beta and pushed it to iPhone 5 users around the world. If you own an iPhone 5, you can download it via iTunes or Over-the-Air through your Settings.

The iOS 9.2 update brings new features, new enhancements, new bug fixes, and new security patches to the iPhone 5. iOS 9.1 and its emojis got a lot more attention but the iOS 9.2 update is extremely important for the iPhone 5.

Today we want to take a look at everything iPhone 5 users need to know about the iOS 9.2 update including iOS 9.2 problems, an iPhone 5 iOS 9.2 review, some tips that will help you when and if you install the update, and details about the iOS update’s that will follow it.

iPhone 5 iOS 9.2 Update Review

iPhone 5 iOS 9.2 Update Review

We've been using the iPhone 5 iOS 9.2 update for a couple of weeks now and here's what we've discovered so far.

The iPhone 5 iOS 9.2 update hasn't brought any significant battery life issues to our iPhone 5 models. We haven't noticed any odd battery drain and the batteries are holding up well when in standby mode. We're able to get a solid eight hours of use when using a mixture of cellular data and Wi-Fi. Par for the course.

We haven't run into any Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/LTE issues, at least not yet. All three have been reliable in the eight days days since the update's release. The same goes for our apps. Apps like Podcasts, Twitter and Chrome (problem apps for us) have been performing at a high level with iOS 9.2 on board.

The big thing is that we haven't run into any major lag issues with iOS 9.2 on board. Apps still open a little slowly and the Control Center animation will sometimes stutter but we can deal with the occcasional lag. This phone is now more than three years old.

iOS 9.2 is an update that recommend to iPhone 5 users who are already on iOS 9. We haven't discovered any major problems and the features and enhancements that it brings improves the iOS 9 experience.

If you're running something older, you'll need to be extremely careful because there's no going back to iOS 8 or iOS 7 once you make your move.

For more, check out our full iPhone 5 iOS 9.2 review.

I had aniphone 5 until this update. It completely fried my phone and the Apple store couldn’t restore it. Phone worked great until this update when it went completely blank. Apple said they could sell me a new 5 for $269.00. I DON’T THINK SO!!!! I’d be careful before updating your phone!

To Apple: I bought my first Mac in 1984, and I have 15 desktops and 5 laptops in my attic graveyard. I can’t understand what’s going on with iOS 9. On my 6s it’s great. On my iPad 2 and iPad mini it is so slow I want to cry. I want to hit myself for being so stupid and so naive to irrevocably upgrade to 9 when I was SO HAPPY with 7. And to find myself so unhappy, so disappointed, so LET DOWN by Apple because now my two iPads are so f***ing slow, I don’t know what to do. I don’t usually talk like that. I am a 65 year old clergyman and I teach values like honesty, trust, fairness and faith. But I also use my iPads to do things, things that used to be fast and easy, but are now maddeningly slow because nothing loads without a wait so long I have to leave my desk to get coffee. Do something to help me. Please.

Sorry to hear you upgraded. That was a mistake and unfortunately there is no solution for your problem. Your devices simply are not fast enough to run IOS 9 without feeling like a slug so you’ll need to upgrade. I highly suggest buying a used iPad Mini 2 and a used iPad Air. You can get these for not a lot of money and they have A7 cpu’s with 1GB of memory which is the bare minimum to run IOS 9 and of course IOS 10 which will be out next year. I went from an iPhone 4s to a used iPhone 5s and while IOS 9 still isn’t as fast as IOS 7 was on my 4s it’s useable by any measure. Even with a 5S I see delays in opening apps and swiping between things that’s how bloated IOS has become. But you’ll be very happy with a slightly newer iPads. You don’t need brand new ones. You can ignore everything else I wrote below here, it’s just me complaining.

Re: IOS 7, it was the last great version of IOS. It ran great on all devices before the feature Bloat of IOS 8 and 9 started crippling devices. The A5 cpu is simply way too slow plus 512MB is not enough ram to run anything past IOS 7. It’s a crappy situatuion but Apple doesn’t allow you to install old versions of IOS and they aren’t in the business or making software that runs great on old devices. They want you to buy a new phone every 12 months so that’s what they gear their releases for.

Quote ‘That was a mistake and unfortunately there is no solution for your problem. Your devices simply are not fast enough to run IOS 9 without feeling like a slug so you’ll need to upgrade.’ I cannot believe what i am reading here, Give me windows any day over Apple. To update an OS and next thing be told your device is too old all of a sudden is nothing short of disgraceful, bordering on robbery actually. How much security updates, patches and features are in an updated OS that requires a device to suddenly become unable to run in timely fashion which in turn forces you to buy newer equipment. The great Apple lie. You just cant justify it. Its just robbing people, forcing them to part with their hard earned cash.

5c as well, not updated from 931, yet putting it off seems to cause screenshot type reload, plus some other minor (for now) issues. WBMA (what burns my ass), is you update and it has told people their device is out of date. No warning. 4S is still a champ. 👍🏻

    • Theo Shabaya

      01/02/2016 at 8:09 am

      Hey Steven,
Hoping over the last couple of weeks you found that the ‘Make Available Offline’ option has now been turned into a symbol.
When pressing the three dots next to a song, both ‘Play Next’ and ‘Add to Up Next’ appear. Above this, on the right of the song information, a little ‘+’ symbol sits. Pressing this will add the song to ‘My Music’.
Once this is done, if the three dots are pressed again, the ‘+’ symbol should have changed into the Appe Download symbol, a cloud with an arrow pointed down.
Pressing this will make the song available offline.

      Enjoy your music!

    2 points.

1- My iPhone5 suffered terrible battery drain with the update to 9.1 so I put it back to 9. I was really hoping that 9.2 would rectify that but it seems people are complaining about it being even worse, with the only other ios being 9.1 (should 9.2 not prove acceptable) I think I’ll pass on this one too.

2- on page 4 you start with the words “You may of heard”…..Seriously? May HAVE heard, or may’ve but certainly NOT may OF.

I fell in love with the camera before the 9.2 update came out…I wish I never updated

My 4S updated and now will not charge nor even connect to iTunes to do a recovery. I paid Apple $80 to put in a battery in hopes I could bring it back. No luck yet. My wife is convinced it is the Apple “you need a new phone” push and a conspiracy. I’m inclined to disagree being an Apple fan… but I agree— this is their fault and it cost me $600 for a new phone…which I may or may not have gotten. Luckily I was at my upgrade time.

Updated my 5C 2 days ago, now phone is practically unusable. If I open the phone or imessage, I can’t go back to the main screen without rebooting the phone. It seems the big button doesn’t work. Most of the time. If I can’t get this fixes, it’s my 2nd but last apple device.

Im not sure if these are trolls or old people trying to work tech in the comments, but my iPhone 5, going on three years old, works fine with this update. We pages load a little bit quicker but not enough to make a difference from 9.1. The only lag I’ve experienced is with the multitasking screen. It freezes for a second before switching to the app you selected. Good thing I don’t multitask much.

The only advice is to pay ? Buy something else !! It was working fine before.Mine (iPad2) as well, now its a peace of garbage that can’t even be useful for the children. :(
Preventing the possibility to get back to an old OS version in the year 2015 where it is possible to all other devices and computer since the very beginning of computers a couple of DECADES ago for only marketing / greedy reasons is a shame. The worst is the huge number of Apple fans believing its normal and advocating on Apple’s behalf. Shame.

I just started the iOs 9.2 update on a 5S last night and now my phone is dead. Won’t start. Just blank screen. Tried connecting to Mac. Update failed. Tried Restore and that failed. Went to Apple store and was told my hard-drive had died and I needed to buy a new phone. I’ve had this one for 18 months and have used it very little (it’s not my main) and it’s never fallen, no damage, no water etc… I’m dumbfounded by Apple’s approach and inability to help me after pushing 9.2 on me. The guy at the Apple store said the moment I clicked “Accept” at the start of the update, it wasn’t their problem! How are they allowed to destroy our phones with impunity?!?

Ford Microsoft Sync has some issues with the 9.2 ios upgrade. Voice commands and text links. Assume Verizon (my network), Microsoft and/or Apple is looking into this. Just spent 3 hours at the Ford dealer trying to find out why MySync and my I5 don’t communicate on incoming text messages.

I have the same problem with my iPhone 5S…after 9.2 ios upgrade it died. After 1 day it came to life but it is dying every time that I am entering an application. After the last update I installed, I was no longer able to retrieve voicemails. In fact, I have no notification that I have voicemail. I also dealt with the phone dying and after several frustrating minutes and help from someone online, I was able to get the phone to turn back on. I am in the process of installing this latest update. I pray all goes well and I am able to access voicemail again.

My daughter just updated her iPhone 5C to IOS9.2 today (excellent condition). Stopped working, tried rebooting, got weird color flickering, blue screen, fading Apple logo, and a plethora of other “gremlins” as folks have stated above. Was working great yesterday, updated today, and now my daughter is very sad because her wonderful baby-blue iPhone 5C is dead. Tried updating/restoring with latest version of iTunes on my Window 7 pro PC (with latest updates). No luck. Firmware update progress bar (under Apple logo in restore mode) completed, then immediately went into blue screen.

This just happened today shortly after I purchased a new iPhone 6s for my wife (I own an iPhone 6 myself, and we have a house full of iPads). I have now told everyone in my household not to update anything Apple sends – I too am convinced they are doing this to force people to buy new products. The fact that there is no option to restore to previous OS and their stock answer of “well, the product is old now” is just sickening… especially when you forked over $550+ two years back. Imagine if that’s how it was in the PC industry? Why is it now acceptable for Apple to offer that as an answer?

I think even avid Apple fans are taking note of the clear decline in customer service/customer advocacy Apple used to have when Steve Jobs was around. Those times are gone and Steve Jobs would be very disappointed in what the greedy folks that took over that company have done… it will catch up with them someday. What a shame.

Yet another disappointed Apple customer of years…

I am not sure who I am more disappointed with… Apple Corporation or Barak Obama. Obama might be better than McCain or Romney but is an iPhone better than a Samsung Galaxy? I’ll be discovering the latter at my next upgrade.

I had a 5 and updated dec 2015 and now it continually searches for service or says no service. I believe apple has code in the update to “sniff” on the phone and if its been awhile since you have upgraded then a certain line of code is ran. Sounds eerily familiar for what Volkswagen got busted for. The updates are a source of revenue. I will wien myself off apple now.

My 5 keeps getting crappier every day that passes. I updated it to iOS9 a few weeks ago. It was fine til 9.2 was installed. Here are the many problems mine has.

The camera fails to work. It mostly freezes but every now and then it has a black screen. When it freezes it gives the icon saying “flash overheated.”

The flashlight fails to work 9 of 10 tries.

Bluetooth somehow loses connection with any device but show it is connected on phone.

Battery drainage. It loses 10% every hour, on wifi with nothing open. After charging it will drain while plugged in.

    Mail doesn’t refresh correctly.

Restarting doesn’t help at all. Everything randomly works when it wants. And the closest Apple Store is 175 miles away.

I just updated to iOS 9.2.1, bad decision. My iPhone 5C does not show any Cellular network or LTE. So the phone is dead. How can Apple sent us update 9.2.1 to lure people into updating for security fix reason. Actually, it will kill your iPhone and they knew it. That is a WORST WAY to get people to buy new iPhone. I think some smart and bright lawyers should take a class action against Apple.

    • James Violette

      01/29/2016 at 11:36 am

      Exactly – CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT!!
I’d feel differently if they said, “We realized there is an issue. We will fix or replace your device. We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may have cause. Your business is very important to us.”
But they made me out to be the only guy with the problem and they’ve never heard of such a thing. And too bad. Just go get it fixed on your dime.
It’s not like they don’t have the money and resources to make this right.

They said, ” Do NOT upgrade to the latest OS because it’s actually breaking peoples phones.” I didn’t take it too seriously, because I thought – how could software break the hardware??? So I didn’t upgrade at that point because their comments made me nervous. So the 9.2.1 came out recently and I figured – Oh well, Things must be worked out with this upgrade… So I upgraded. Big mistake. So far, my front camera doesn’t work. Neither does my flashlight. Due to my line of work, I use these things every single day. The Apple tech at the hot line ( of course) said he has never heard of such a thing. -Even though it took me all of 2 minutes on Google for me to find dozens of people with the same issues and more. His comment was, Well, everyone online has a problem.” Like we’re all one big pain in the ass. He told me to reset back to the factory settings. Which I did. and if that doesn’t work, then I need a hardware repair ( he said) at my expense. And told me it’s my phone and there are really no problems with the latest update. I’ve been buying apple products religiously for 21 years. Every device I have is Apple. To call them for help in an effort to solve a problem with their product, caused by their software, and be treated like i’m the only one – so clearly I’m making it up- is absolutely outrageous. This post is merely a short version of the time I’ve spent on dealing with this problem. And obviously I am NOT the “only one” with this issue. If there is a class action lawsuit, count me in. And If I have to buy a new phone, it won’t be Apple. And I will spent hours posting this everywhere I can possibly find to post. Thanks Apple for rewarding loyalty with a kick in the teeth.

Iphone 5 32GB working fast as light with IOS 9.2.1
Im afraid that bot trolling has taken over that discussion
Not here to enforce apple at any way but all this seems a little fake and i find it truly hard to believe all these comments, especially since i see such performance on a 3 year old device!!

iOS 9 breaks iPhone 5 plain and simple by design. This is the lat time I will ever buy an Apple product.

For all you Apple lovers…I changed the battery twice and had the exact performance. Blackberry and Windows seem apealing until Canocial gets their $hit together!

Why does the media ignore that Apple is making once perfectly good phones, paperweights?
