A new phone called the LG G5 has been in the news a lot lately, rumored to have a brand new design in an effort to take on the upcoming Galaxy S7, iPhone 7 and more. We’ve heard rumors about the LG G5 since as far back as November, and this weekend a slew of images leaked that confirm everything we’ve heard thus far.

In April of last year the LG G4 was announced with a lot of excitement. It arrived a little over a month later near the end of June, and was one of the most popular smartphones of 2015. However, something even better is coming this year with a metal design, three cameras and more.

Leaks first started appearing in November, mainly aiming at the design and talks of LG looking to take on Samsung and others. However, the last two months we’ve learned a lot about the upcoming LG G5. From the screen size, specs, three cameras, a removable battery, and a potential release date. Below are some photos of the LG G5 hiding in a protective case to conceal the final design, and all the details buyers need to know about.

The image on the left, looking at the top right we can see the curved edge of the LG G5, right above the “not for sale” branding on this pre-production test device. The back is also the same design we’ve seen from prior leaked images. On Christmas Eve some photos surfaced by someone claiming to have the LG G5 in his hands, but it too was covered in a case to hide the final design. Something many manufacturers do. The user posted the images to Reddit, then disappeared. Since then we’ve received a lot of information from a slew of different sources, but no more photos of the phone. That all changed this weekend with new photos that are confirming everything we’ve heard so far.

Reports from ETNews in Korea, popular leaksters like @evleaks and more have all suggested the same thing (like dual rear cameras), which is what we’re seeing in these photos. Here’s what prospective buyers can expect from the LG G5 in 2016.

LG G5 Specs (Rumored)

  • 5.5-inch Quad-HD Display (could be 5.3-inches and have two screens like the LG V10)
  • 8-core Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB of RAM
  • 32GB of storage with a micro-SD slot for user expansion
  • 16 and 8 megapixel rear camera (Dual cameras) 8 megapixel front camera
  • Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow
  • Full Metal Design
  • Rear-mounted fingerprint scanner
  • Volume buttons moved to side
  • 3,000 mAh removable and replaceable battery
  • Heart Rate Sensor, Laser Autofocus, IR sensor for remote, and more
  • Bottom Facing Speakers and USB Type-C port
  • Magic Slot on bottom that slides open to swap battery & accessories

As you can see the LG G5 is shaping up to be an excellent flagship smartphone. One that can take on the Galaxy S7, iPhone 7, Moto X 4th Gen and anything else that is released in 2016.

A report a few weeks back suggested the G4 release was delayed in an effort to be released separate from the Galaxy S6, in fear of it cannibalizing sales. This year LG isn’t afraid, and in fact aims to take Samsung head-on. We’re hearing the LG G5 will too, be announced on February 21st in Spain, the same day as the Galaxy S7. Below are more photos showing the metal frame, bottom speakers, and USB Type-C charging port similar to the Nexus 5X.

The images above match everything we’ve heard about the LG G5, but don’t show the “Magic Slot” or unique new sliding tray that we heard about in January, so we’ll have to wait for more details about that.

We can clearly see the new metal design, rear fingerprint scanner, USB Type-C, dual cameras on the back and more in these photos. The device is being hidden, but it appears to be a nice all aluminum silver or white LG G5.

It’s also worth noting that this week some LG G5 cases have surfaced on Amazon, which is nothing new. These are often fake or placeholders for a device before a release, but are also accurate at times as well. Revealing some of the final design aspects of a device well ahead of the release date. Below is the LG G5 cases on Amazon. They match the leaked photos, all the reports and more.

These also somewhat confirm many of the rumors we’ve been hearing in terms of both the design, and the early release date. Cases wouldn’t be surfacing for sale if the phone isn’t coming out until June or July like last year. Which lends credence to reports of a February announcement and mid-March release date.

Next month we should be seeing the Galaxy S7, LG G5, something new from HTC and more, most likely all available in March or April. Stay tuned for more details, and get ready for a trio of flagship Android smartphones early in 2016. What are you most interested in? Let us know in the comments below.
