Amazon Leaks Halo 5 REQ Bundle Surprise

Published

on

Halo 5: Guardians developer 343 Industries may have just had a surprise for its Halo 5 February Update ruined by Amazon. This morning the retailer began taking digital pre-orders for a new REQ Bundle that neither the studio nor Microsoft have officially acknowledged.

The Halo 5: Guardians Arena REQ Bundle became available for pre-order directly through Amazon today. Halo 5’s REQ system allows users to pay for digital packs that unlock different weaponry and extras. Some of the REQ Cards that users get in these bundles are permanent unlocks for armor. Others are one-use only, allowing players to call on a much-needed power weapon when things get rough.

The new Halo 5: Guardians Arena REQ costs $24.99. Roughly, it delivers the same experience as the REQ Bundle that proceeded it. Instead of buying REQ Packs piecemeal, 343 Industries and Microsoft are hoping that users will buy a weeks-long subscription of REQ Packs instead. The Warzone REQ Bundle sells for $24.99 through Amazon too.

“Equip your Spartan with the latest armor, weapons skins, and other requisitions with 14 Premium Arena REQ Packs,” the add-on on’s description at Amazon begins. “These packs provide a great chances at unlocking some of the rarest REQ Cards available including Mythic – legendary items so rare, so storied, and so powerful that they can change the course of entire battles.”

Like other REQ Packs, all items in these REQ Packs are chosen at random, with only their rarity dictating what players get what cards. At least, that’s partially true. 343 Industries is promising a specific upgrade with this Arena REQ Bundle too, it seems. “Additionally, players will receive the Mark V Alpha armor set, inspired by the Master Chief’s Armor in Halo: Combat Evolved. “ The bundle unlocks two Premium REQ Packs a week.

Amazon says that anyone who purchases the Halo 5: Guardians Arena REQ Bundle for Xbox One can expect the add-on to unlock on February 16th, roughly two weeks from today. Presumably, that’s when we’ll have or hear about the February Halo 5 Update.

All told, it’s not exactly surprising that 343 Industries would offer yet another way for users to get involved in REQ Packs. Though they’re earnable by simply playing the game, some people would prefer to purchase REQ Packs and REQ Bundles instead of sinking time they don’t have into just earning them at no charge.

Microsoft is counting on that behavior; new maps and content updates don’t cost Halo 5: Guardians players anything because of REQ Packs. The cosmetic upgrades and one-use weapons are enough to keep hard-core fans of the game’s multiplayer experience coming back for more.

The REQ Pack System also has the added bonus of not fragmenting Halo 5’s online community, which usually happened when the company introduced REQ Packs with a purchase price. Users would dive into playlists with their friends, only to realize that they needed to purchase and download an add-on to play the same maps and playlists.

Halo 5: Guardians launched last fall. The game is part lure, meant to get users who own an Xbox 360 and are into Halo over to Microsoft’s latest console. It’s also part showcase, painting a vivid picture of the Xbox One’s graphic prowess and Xbox Live’s many community features.

Xbox One bundles with the game are hard to come by, but the passage of time has made Halo 5: Guardians a little cheaper to pick up. Amazon has the Digital Deluxe Edition of Halo 5: Guardians available for sale now for $69.99. Halo 5: Guardians Limited Edition is $79.99. At GameStop, Halo 5: Guardians costs $39.99.
